X-Men Krakoa Era Reading Guide Part 3

Welcome to part 3 of Graphic Policy‘s (mostly) comprehensive reading guide for the X-Men’s Krakoan Era, if you missed part 1 here’s the link and here’s the link to part 2. Last time we covered Reign of X, The Hellfire Gala, The Trial Of Magneto, and Inferno. This time we’re covering X Lives/X Deaths Of Wolverine, Destiny Of X, A.X.E.: Judgment Day, Dark Web and finally Sins Of Sinister.

Now I’m going to repeat myself a bit (again) and talk again about the Marvel Unlimited App. Marvel Unlimited is a subscription service that gives you access to virtually the entire back catalog of Marvel Comics with new comics added around three months after publication. like I said last time, Marvel Unlimited was an invaluable resource for me while reading through the Krakoan Era of X-Men and I can’t recommend it enough.

Without further ado let’s read some comics!

X LIVES/X DEATHS OF WOLVERINE

X LIVES/X DEATHS OF WOLVERINE

“Time’s sideways and time’s forwards. Time’s backwards and upside down.”

X Lives Of Wolverine is a time hopping odyssey through the messy and often contradictory history of Wolverine. Meanwhile X Deaths Of Wolverine follows the recently depowered Moira MacTaggert as she goes on the run from Krakoa and a mysterious techno-organic Wolverine!

Reading order:

  • X Lives of Wolverine #1
  • X Deaths of Wolverine #1
  • X Lives of Wolverine #2
  • X Deaths of Wolverine #2
  • X Lives of Wolverine #3
  • X Deaths of Wolverine #3
  • X Lives of Wolverine #4
  • X Deaths of Wolverine #4
  • X Lives of Wolverine #5

DESTINY OF X

DESTINY OF X

“I think we need to be on the same side”

Coming off the heels of X Lives/X Deaths the line relaunches with several new titles such as the political thriller Immortal X-Men by Kieron Gillen, X-Men Red a exploration of Arrako by Al Ewing, the sequel to Way Of X, Legion Of X, the surprising critique of carceral system Sabertooth by Victor LaValle, The new iteration of Marauders by Steve Orlando, and the penultimate installment in Tini Howard’s Betsy Braddock saga Knights Of X. All of these stand alongside the continuing titles X-Force and Wolverine by Benjamin Percy, and the flagship of the line Gerry Duggan’s X-Men.

Reading order:

  • Sabertooth #1-5
  • X-Force Annual #1
  • X-Force #27-29

  • X-Men: Hellfire Gala 2022 #1
  • Immortal X-Men #4

*Marvel’s Voices Infinity Comic is our first Infinity Comic, a type of scrolling comic hosted on marvel unlimited (see told you it was important). It’s not mandatory and pretty skippable but it’s good and sets up a romantic love interest for Iceman that you’ll see in the future. Another Infinity comic is X-Men Unlimited which largely offers slice of life stories on Krakoa, it only really becomes plot relevant during the Fall Of X.

A.X.E.: JUDGEMENT DAY

A.X.E.: JUDGEMENT DAY

“You have 24 hours to justify yourselves”

Two tribes go to war! It’s X-Men vs Eternals with the Avengers caught in-between. The threads from Gillen’s Eternals run and Immortal X-Men collide in this giant-sized event! A.X.E: Judgment Day is perhaps the largest event in this series of reading guides. We’re keeping our reading guide for this event to the main stuff which luckily is mostly X-Men.

Reading order:

  • Eternals #1-6*
  • Eternals: Thanos Rises #1*
  • Eternals: Celestia #1*
  • Eternals #7-9*
  • Eternals: The Heretic #1*
  • Eternals 10-12*

  • A.X.E.: Starfox #1
  • Immortal X-Men #7
  • A.X.E.: Judgment Day #6
  • A.X.E.: Judgment Day Omega #1

*While not a part of A.X.E.: Judgment Day proper these issues comprise Kieron Gillen’s run on Eternals. It’s essential to understanding Judgment Day which is in all honesty the second part of the Gillen Eternals’s run.

DESTINY OF X PART 2

DESTINY OF X PART 2

“Governments ask you to build terrible things. It’s up to the scientists to weigh what’s worse… having that new toy… or not having it”

After the massive event that was A.X.E: Judgment Day we return to our regularly scheduled programming. Here both Steve Orlando’s Marauders and Vita Ayala’s New Mutants. On the flip side we get the Gleefully Transgressive mini-series X-Terminators by Leah Williams, a Firestar centric story in X-Men Annual by Steve Orlando, and what’s in my opinion the best arc of Gerry Duggan’s X-Men.

Reading order:

  • Marauders #7-12
  • New Mutants #25-30
  • X-Terminators #1-5
  • X-Men Annual (2022) #1
  • X-Men #15-18

DARK WEB

DARK WEB

“A nothing person! In a nowhere place!”

Another event! Dark Web is primarily a crossover between Zeb Well’s Amazing Spider-Man and X-Men. There are a few other titles involved in the event but were keeping it strictly need to know and X-centric. Spider-Man’s clone Ben Reilly has turned evil and has teamed up with the X-Men’s resident evil clone Madelyne Pryor! Together they conspire to takeover New York and take back what was stolen from them!

Reading order:

  • The Amazing Spider-Man #14
  • Dark Web #1
  • Dark Web: X-Men #1
  • Venom #14
  • Dark Web X-Men #2-3
  • Dark Web Final #1

DESTINY OF X PART 3

DESTINY OF X PART 3

“Survival of the fittest.”

This one is a real grab bag of stuff. In X-Men the titular team is off fighting the brood, Deadpool by Alyssia Wong is a not so subtle love story, Victor LaValle explores the history of medical malpractice of minorities in Sabertooth and the Exiles of all places, Charlie Jane Anders introduces a new young mutant Escapade, Tini Howard wraps up her Betsy Braddock saga in Betsy Braddock: Captain Britan, and finally something sinister is brewing.

Reading order:

  • X-Men #19-21
  • Deadpool #1-10
  • Sabretooth and the Exiles #1-5
  • Marvel’s Voices: Pride 2022 #1*
  • New Mutants #31-33
  • New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1-5
  • Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #1-5
  • Immortal X-Men #8
  • X-Men Red #8-10
  • Legion of X #7-10

*Like the year before it, Marvel’s Voices: Pride 2022 #1 introduces a brand new character who will be relevant for a at the time upcoming book, in this case the only story you need to worry about is “Permanent Sleepover”.

SINS OF SINISTER

SINS OF SINISTER

“To me, my me’s”

Mr. Sinister wins! Split between three time periods, year 10, year 100, and year 1,000 (à la HOXPOX), this alternate future event (à la Age Of Apocalypse) welcomes us to a entire universe cursed by the Sins Of Sinister! Immoral X-Men, Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants, and Nightcrawlers each are essentially continuations of Immortal X-Men, X-Men Red, and Legion of X respectively. Sins of Sinister is a interesting event that puts a spin on a X-Men classic, the dark future!

Reading order:

  • Immortal X-Men #9-10
  • Sins of Sinister #1
  • Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #1
  • Nightcrawlers #1
  • Immoral X-Men #1
  • Nightcrawlers #2
  • Immoral X-Men #2
  • Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #2
  • Immoral X-Men #3
  • Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #3
  • Nightcrawlers #3
  • Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1

And so we come to a close on the third part of our (mostly) comprehensive Krakoa Era reading guide. Before I said to come back and join us next time for the next installment but at the time of writing the next chapter in the Krakoan era, Fall Of X is still coming out. However once it’s all said and done we’ll come back to finish this series of reading guides off.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Detective Comics #1062

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Ant-Man #1 (Marvel) – It’s Ant-Man throughout the years!

Book of Shadows #1 (Valiant) – The mystic heroes of the Valiant Universe come together to take on a major threat.

DC Mech #1 (DC Comics) – A twist on the DC world as the heroes we know pilot mechs to take on threats. In this case, a strange alien from a dying world.

Detective Comics #1062 (DC Comics) – A new creative team takes on the series and the art looks great. Definitely worth checking it out to hop on.

Gambit #1 (Marvel) – Chris Claremont takes us back to when Gambit was hanging out with a young Storm.

Kaiju Score: Steal from the Gods #4 (AfterShock) – The kaiju has woken up and at this point we have no idea how our thieves are getting out of there and how the kaiju will be stopped before it destroys the world.

The Naughty List #4 (AfterShock) – A fun twist on Santa Claus. We now know who has the naughty list, now it’s time for some violence to get it back!

Public Domain #2 (Image Comics) – The debut was an interesting meta story about rights to characters and the adaptation of comic creations to the screen. It’s a layered drama in comic form.

Something is Killing the Children #25 (BOOM! Studios) – A universe is being built between the two series as the OG hits a big publishing number!

The Variants #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was fantastic and left us guessing as to whether Jessica Jones was losing her mind or this is a multiverse adventure.

Review: A.X.E.: Eve of Judgement #1

A.X.E.: Eve of Judgement #1

Marvel’s big summer event is gearing up and officially starts with A.X.E.: Eve of Judgement #1, a “zero issue” in a way that gets readers caught up on what’s going on. The event will pit the Eternals against the X-Men with the Avengers caught in-between.

A.X.E.: Eve of Judgement #1 is rather interesting as it focuses completely on the Eternals. We’re taken through their rather complicated factions and history, setting up the conflict to come. We’re introduced to a people whose role has been recently shaken but whose views still seem rather black and white.

Druig is now the Prime Eternal, guiding his people towards the future. He still sees their role as protecting the planet from deviation. What greater deviation is there than mutants who can live forever? For that, they must be exterminated. No debate. No real reason why. It just is. Make it so.

Writer Kieron Gillen takes us through the various groups and individuals all jockeying in an opening that feels almost Shakespearean in its duplicitousness. Secrets feel like they’re part of the every day when it comes to the Eternals with each individual set in their role and view of what must be done. There’s something rather classic in how “right” they feel they are. Maneuvering has already begun by so many of them as they plot the Eternals’ and world’s future. At no point is the case really made that Druig is right in his view. It feels like Gillen has planted the flag as to who is right and who is wrong in the conflict to come.

The art by Pasqual Ferry is a bit mixed. While overall it’s nice, there’s some very noticeable head scratching moments. A character is on the left and then suddenly on the right, then back on the left with no explanation. It’s jarring. Eyes feel like they’re bulging out of a head. There’s small details with Ferry’s work that add up. Dean White handles the colors which are used well as the settings change around and Clayton Cowles lettering adds dramatic flair at the right times.

A.X.E.: Eve of Judgement #1 is an interesting opening. It leaves no room to debate who is right and who is wrong. It treats the action Druig takes so nonchalantly as to make it feel like it’s not a big deal. It just kind of is. Maybe with what’s to come in the first issue it’ll flow a bit better but as presented, the comic doesn’t get me excited for what’s to come, it sets up what feels like a rather predictable narrative to fill our summer months.

Story: Kieron Gillen Art: Pasqual Ferry
Color: Dean White Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Story: 7.5 Art: 7.0 Overall: 7.4 Recommendation: Read

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Barbaric: Harvest Blades

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Above Snakes #1 (Image Comics) – The series brings together Western tropes and good ole American vengeance from the creators of The Few and Thumbs.

AXE: Eve of Judgement #1 (Marvel) – Kicking off the big event of the summer for Marvel. The opening round of the Eternals battle against the people of Krakoa begins here.

Barbaric: Harvest Blades (Vault Comics) – The first volume was great with a fun take on the fantasy genre that delivered a lot of action and some good humor.

By the Horns: Dark Earth #2 (Scout Comics) – For those that enjoy fantasy, this is a must. It’s a great mix of magic and tech as magic is all out of whack and the world is in danger.

Cities of Magick #3 (Scout Comics) – The first two issues have been intriguing building up the world as magic now rules and technology is a thing of the past. It’s an interesting flip on the magic vs. tech story we’ve seen before.

Daredevil #1 (Marvel) – The next phase of Daredevil’s story begins here as the two go international and shift their focus on The Hand. You know this will eventually have the two having to take on the Punisher.

Dogs of London #3 (AfterShock) – We went in expecting a series about former gangsters haunted by their pasts but what’s been teased shows this is so much more. We’re stumped and want to know what’s going on.

Eight Billion Genies #3 (Image Comics) – The comic has been great so far. The ideas are wild but it’s also intelligently kept things focused as the world deals with everyone having a genie and a wish.

Flavor Girls #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A Magical Girl story with an environmental twist.

Justice Warriors #2 (AHOY Comics) – The first issue was great satire taking on the police and so much more. We want more of the same and hoping for exactly that. Skewer away!

Rogues #3 (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – The series has been a twisted heist story as the Rogues go for one last big one. It’s been amazing so far and a must for those that love the characters or that type of story.

X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1 (Marvel) – Last year’s event was a big deal so expect the same here.

The pieces of the upcoming event will fall into place in June’s A.X.E.: Eve of Judgement #1, a prelude issue where Gillen will team up with artist Pasqual Ferry to present the first shot of the apocalyptic conflict to come. After that, the saga will be told across six explosive issues in A.X.E.: Judgement Day, the main event series launching in July, as well as tie-in issues unleashed across the Marvel Universe. An extraordinary odyssey that will leave a profound emotional impact on the Marvel mythology, A.X.E.: Judgement Day will tie together radical plot developments from the last few years including the X-Men’s discovery of immortality, the Eternals’ newfound knowledge about their purpose, and the Avengers’ assembling a powerful lineup at their base in the body of a fallen Celestial.

The Avengers have become a more powerful global force than ever from their base inside a long-dead Celestial. The X-Men have achieved a form of immortality on their utopian island nation of Krakoa. And the Eternals have begun a new cycle of life as they continue their sworn mission to eliminate the Deviants. But when the Eternals learn that mutantkind itself is a form of excess deviation, a vicious assault on Krakoa ensues – with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes trapped in the middle. Years of tension lead to a volcanic eruption as two worlds burn!
