Jim Lee’s X-Men Gets an Artist’s Edition

Jim Lee’s X-Men Artist’s Edition

In October, IDW Publishing will celebrate the dynamic artwork of industry icon Jim Lee with the addition of Jim Lee’s X-Men Artist’s Edition to its multiple Eisner Award-winning AE line.

Nearly 30 years ago, Jim Lee joined writer Chris Claremont and inker Scott Williams to launch Marvel’s all-new, all-different X-Men – the classic 1990s “Blue Team” that defined the look and attitude of the X-Men brand for a generation. The impact his dynamic artwork has had on the comics industry – on his legions of fans and the artists who have been inspired by and emulated him – is truly immeasurable. In a career filled with highlights, his work on X-Men is arguably his most popular and enduring.

This Artist’s Edition will include the entire complete story from the bestselling comic book of the modern era, X-Men #1. Additionally, this book will include scans of gorgeous original artwork from some of Lee’s best and most iconic issues – covers, splashes, pin-ups, and interior pages. Each page has been meticulously scanned from Lee’s original art for this book, affording the reader insight into his creative process never before available outside of original art collectors.

As with all Artist’s Editions, each gorgeous page will be reproduced from scans of the original art and printed at the same size they were drawn, with all the distinctive creative nuances that make original art unique – a perfect representation of the work in its original form.

Michael Golden’s Micronauts Artist’s Edition Celebrates the Masterful Illustration of Miniature Heroes

In June, IDW Publishing will release the latest addition to its multiple Eisner Award-winning AE line with Michael Golden’s Micronauts Artist’s Edition.

Over 40 years ago, Marvel debuted the influential Micronauts comic book series, licensed at the time from the Mego Corporation (the Micronauts brand has since been acquired by Hasbro). The original series quickly amassed a hardcore fan following, one that survives decades later thanks to the mesmerizing narrative by Bill Mantlo and otherworldly illustration of Michael Golden and fellow artists.

Out of print for 35 years, six complete issues of Micronauts (#3, #7-9, and #11-12) will be collected in the 184-page Artist’s Edition, alongside a gallery section of more than a dozen covers, art rarities from the era, and additional pages that represent some of Michael Golden’s very best from the Micronauts series. This gorgeous hardcover measures 12” x 17”.

As with all Artist’s Editions, nearly every gorgeous plate will be reproduced from scans of the original art and printed at the same size they were drawn, with all the distinctive creative nuances that make original art unique – a perfect representation of the work in its original form.

IDW will donate a portion of profits to the long-term medical care of Bill Mantlo, who has received treatment for cognitive and memory impairment since a 1992 hit-and-run accident.

NYCC 2013: Jim Steranko Marvel Artist’s Editions Are On Their Way!

Legendary comics artist Jim Steranko will be the subject of not one but two Artist’s Editions from IDW Publishing, with nearly all pages shot from the artist’s personal art collection. Steranko, one of the great innovators in comics history, produced a comparatively small body of work for the House of Ideas from the mid-1960s to the early ’70s, most notably his runs on Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain America.

The first volume, Steranko Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Artist’s Edition, will feature the initial twelve stories by Steranko that appeared in Strange Tales #151 through #162. All of these stories were drawn in the “twice up” format, meaning the original art is rendered at twice the size of the printed comic. The final book will measure 15 x 22 inches and is currently scheduled for release in May of 2014.

The second volume, Steranko Nick Fury and Captain America Artist’s Edition, will collect the remaining Nick Fury stories from Strange Tales 163-168, as well as issues 1, 3, and 5 of the Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. comic series. As icing on the cake, Sterankos three stellar issues of Captain America will also be included. This volume will measure 12 x 17 inches, and the release date is still to be determined.

WHAT IS AN ARTIST’S EDITION?  AN ARTIST’S EDITION PRESENTS COMPLETE STORIES WITH EACH PAGE SCANNED FROM THE ACTUAL ORIGINAL ART.

While appearing to be in black and white, each page was scanned in color to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for instance, corrections and blue pencils. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board.
