In a post-apocalyptic future, our hero Archie Andrews is cursed to walk the world alone—well, alone with his souped-up jalopy. But Archie can defend himself—in fact, he’s the master of a brutal, deadly form of martial arts and must use his skills when he comes face-to-face with his rival and evil mirror image, Reggie. This action-packed one-shot is equal parts Mad Max: Fury Road and The Fist of the North Star, and reunites the “Jughead the Burgarian” team from the smash-hit comic THE BEST ARCHIE COMIC EVER!

Archie vs. The World leaves us wanting more

Archie vs. The World

Archie Comics has found success in recent years taking its beloved characters and throwing them into new and crazy situations. Horror has been a regular genre explored but superheroes and more have been a part of the fun. Now, with Archie vs. The World, we get Archie in an apocalyptic setting that’s a bit Mad Max and a bit Fist of the North Star.

Written by Aubrey Sitterson, Archie vs. The World is a love letter to the stories of the 80s where tires were shoulder pads and martial arts created elaborate displays and destructive paths. The comic doesn’t hide what it’s trying to be, a condensed riff on classic stories. It’s broken up into chapters focusing on the major events taking place. That’s both good and bad.

Archie vs. The World is a bit surface level. It’s a hell of a lot of fun, partially seeing how far Sitterson will take things. But, it’s a series of events as opposed to a really smooth narrative. It’s missing the details between the main event. And that’s part of what it’s supposed to be. The issue is it leaves the reader wanting more. This is the key sequences in the trailer that ruins the movie but I still want to see the whole movie to get everything going on. There’s a story but it’s those small details that could really make this series into something else. But, the details it does deliver are great, partially from the visuals.

The art by Jed Dougherty packs in all of the fun from those martial arts manga it riffs on. With color by Matt Herms and Doug Garbark and lettering by Jack Morelli it delivers the over the top visuals you’d expect. You don’t know why everything is going on, but the images tell you these are bad ass fighters. The team doesn’t try to do anything new, it doesn’t need to, the look of the comic is of a classic style mixed with Archie and it works really well. Small details give winks, nods, and laughs, to the world of Archie we know but the action is all Fist of the North Star and all of its imitators. It knows what it is and goes with it to solid results.

The criticism of Archie vs. The World isn’t necessarily the comic itself. It’s riff on Mad Max and Fist of the North Star is a lot of fan. The issue is, the comic is a series of shorts strung together as a narrative. There’s clearly a lot in between each chapter creating a choppy reading experience. Hopefully the comic is a success and we can get an “expanded” tale from this creative team taking us deeper into the story and world.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Darkwing Duck #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Action Comics #1051 (DC Comics) – The comic kicks off the new direction for the series focused on the entire Superman family and we’re excited what it brings and where it goes.

Archie vs. the World (Archie Comics) – A new spin on Archie is a bit Mad Max and a little Fist of the North Star. We’re all intrigued.

Bulls of Beacon Hill #1 (AfterShock) – A gay son wants to run for city council but must deal with his mobster father.

Darkwing Duck #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The classic character is back and we’re beyond excited. Let’s get dangerous!

Gargoyles #2 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The first issue was amazing showing depth beyond a comic based on a cartoon for kids. We’re hoping the series keeps it going.

Once Upon a Time at the End of the World #3 (BOOM! Studios) – One of many post apocalyptic tales but it’s focus on its two characters and the art delivering so much depth and detail to the world keeps the story focused and stands out.

Plush #3 (Image Comics) – The series has been utterly bizarre and beyond funny with its twisted cannibal furries. No idea where it’s going but if it can keep up the laughs, we’re good with it.

Sins of Sinister #1 (Marvel) – The event kicks off as we see Sinister’s plans play out and maybe get a bit out of hand.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin – Lost Years #1 (IDW Publishing) – The Last Ronin was entertaining and we’re interested in seeing where it goes with some new releases set in that storyline.

Zombicide: Day One #1 (Source Point Press) – The popular board game comes to comics and we want to see if it can stand out from all of the zombie comics and how it incorporates the game experience into the story.

Archie vs. The World

Archie fights for survival in a post-apocalyptic new comic!

Archie Comics looks into the future — and it’s not great! — in an all-new one-shot comic, Archie vs. The World, hitting store shelves in January! The blockbuster sci-fi special pits Archie and pals against a post-apocalyptic wasteland where only the strong survive, in a pedal-to-the-metal brawl that could only be told by writer Aubrey Sitterson and artist Jed Dougherty. Archie vs. The World will be the pair’s first solo title from Archie Comics.

Archie vs. The World sees Archie face off against Reggie in a brutal (and hilarious!) fight for control of a secret water source, prized for its rarity in the devastated future setting. The gang uses souped-up vehicles and weapons to eke out their existence, including a radically customized version of Archie’s classic broken down jalopy which will be familiar to longtime fans of the 80-year-old publisher. Each page-turn heightens the spectacle as more iconic Archie characters and concepts are introduced, including reimagined versions of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Josie and the Pussycats.

Archie vs. The World, with colors by Matt Herms and lettering by Jack Morelli, releases January 18 in comic shops nationwide and is available for pre-order now. It will feature a cover by Jed Dougherty and an open-to-order variant cover by Aaron Lopresti.
