Another Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark Injury

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkWhat will it take for someone to pull the plug on this disaster?  T.V. Carpio who took over as Arachne in Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was injured during a battle scene and will be out for the next two weeks.  While the extent of the injury wasn’t disclosed, it occurred on March 16.  An understudy will take over the part while Carpio recovers.

The injury occurred in a scene that involved a confrontation between Peter Parker and Arachne and involved hand-to-hand fighting.

This is the fifth injury during the musical and the original Arachne Natalie Mendoza suffered a concussion during the first preview performance.  She later bowed out.

On top of injuries the musical (reportedly costing upwards of $70 million) has been plagued by issues.  There’s been recent leadership changes, including the sacking of original director Julie Taymor.  Additional people have been brought in to improve the music, script and well, everything.

The show will go on hiatus for three weeks from April 19 to May 11 so the actors can get used to the changes.  Despite the issues the show continues to be popular and earned $1.4 million last week coming in third.

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkAfter the exit of the actress who originally was in the role, Arachne has been recast and will be played by T.V. Carpio in the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

Natalie Mendoza had originally been in the role and left to continue her recovery after an injury during the first performance.  Carpio had been playing the character Miss Arrow, a member of the show’s “Geek Chorus.”  Carpio made her Broadway debut in 2006 as a member of the ensemble in Rent.

The character of Miss Arrow will now be played by Alice Lee, who was in the ensemble of the Broadway musical Spring Awakening.

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkMichael Cohl who is the lead producer for the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has confirmed through a statement that actress Natalie Mendoza would be leaving the show.  Mendoza portrayed Arachne in the musical.

Mendoza was injured during the first performance of the show which has been plagued by injuries.  The statement said it was the actresses decision to leave.  Mendoza had this to say in the statement:

It has been a difficult decision to make, but I regret that I am unable to continue on ‘Spider-Man’ as I recover from my injury. I wish Julie and the cast and crew every success with this production.

America Olivo was the understudy for Mendoza and no replacement has been named.  The creative team has said they will not comment further.

Lead Actress Departs Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkNatalie Mendoza, who suffered a concussion during the first preview performance, will be leaving the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.  Rumors are circulating an exit agreement is being worked on between the actress, her representatives and representatives of the musical.

Mendoza plays Arachne and her last performance was December 20.  She’s on vocal rest prescribed by her doctors.  It is also reported she’s shaken by the injury of her friend and fellow actor Christopher Tierney.

Arachne is a new character created for the performance and much of the second act revolves around the character.  The character sings the title song and on five other songs.

This was Mendoza’s Broadway debut.  She was best known for a role in the movie The Descent.

The musical grossed $944,138 for its four shows and played to 100 percent capacity for the week of December 26.  That figure doesn’t include any refunds for canceled performances.

Spider-Man Musical Actress Suffers Concussion

Spider-man Turn Off the DarkIf all of the jokes making fun of the upcoming Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark wasn’t enough, actress Natalie Mendoza, who plays the villainess Arachne, suffered a concussion during the first preview performance.  The actress was hit in the head by a rope holding a piece of equipment.  Against doctors advice the actress performed during the second performance.

The Actors’ Equity union and the New York State Department of Labor, which monitors safety in public performances, said they are looking into the accident.  Mendoza is the third actor to be injured.
