Big Easy Con Switches Dates to November Leaving Vendors and Attendees Holding the Bill

Big Easy Con

It looks like those who were planning on attending the Big Easy Con aren’t having that much of an easy time. The first time convention being put on by LeftField Media has stumbled out of the gate already switching dates.

The convention was to take place June 1 and 2 and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans but nine days after we received our initial press announcement about the show, the convention has moved to November leaving exhibitors and attendees with a lot of questions.

Angry individuals took to the convention’s Facebook announcement voicing their displeasure and asking some pretty important questions.

Creators who attended Awesome Con, also a Leftfield show, were offered free shipping from that convention to Big Easy Con. With the convention now taking place over three days November 1-3, those creators are left trying to figure out how to get their product and other supplies back as some have shows between the original June dates and November. There’s also those who have had product shipped directly from the printer to the show as well who are left with questions and scrambling what to do.

Attendees as well are left holding the bill, along with some creators, as flights and hotels have been book with the show less than a month away. Some of that is non-refundable.

When questioned over what vendors can do, the convention responded:

…all vendors received an email today with their options listed. Getting a full refund on their booth is definitely one of those options. Hotel rooms in the Big Easy Con room block are also 100% refundable.

Vendors flights though are still a question and while some may be able to get credit for use later, others have non-refundable tickets, or will be forced to spend more changing flight plans.

In the announcement of the date change, the reason given was that the convention want to create a more “enjoyable and valuable experience” for the community and have expanded the convention to three days and more space within the convention center. They’ve also said fans weren’t “enthusiastic about the June dates.” Fans asked on Facebook about that with no response.

Big Easy Con has said they are upgrading two day tickets to three day, single day ticket holders can upgrade, and those who want a refund for their tickets can request one.

It’s unknown which guests will return in November though the convention announced Zachary Levi’s attendance around the same time as the date change.

For a first year convention, many are pointing out this isn’t a good first impression and obviously not a good look for a veteran company like Leftfield who also runs Anime NYC, Rose City Comic Con, and Awesome Con.

Anime NYC 2018: Hit Manga Cardcaptor Sakura and Princess Jellyfish Return in Deluxe Edition, Box Set and more from Kodansha

The groundbreaking fantasy manga Cardcaptor Sakura will return in a new, nine-volume hardcover deluxe edition starting in Spring 2019. Major manga publisher Kodansha Comics revealed the new release of the classic graphic novel series from revered creators CLAMP, which will be titled Cardcaptor Sakura: Collector’s Edition, at their panel at the Anime NYC convention.

Like previous premium manga re-releases from Kodansha Comics, which have included Sailor Moon Eternal Edition and the Eisner Award-winning Akira 35th Anniversary Edition, Cardcaptor Sakura Collector’s Edition will feature a newly-revised translation, high-quality art and lettering, and all the color pages from the original Japanese run. Each hardcover will also include new cover art by CLAMP and a  “clow card,” and Kodansha teased that readers who collect all nine volumes are in for a special treat!

Kodansha Comics will release the fifth volume of CLAMP’s new sequel series Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card, which has become a hit in its own right since it began late last year, on Nov. 20.

The publisher also announced a collector’s box set of their hit story about geek girls in Tokyo, Princess Jellyfish. The complete series box set will feature all nine paperback volumes of Akiko Higashimura‘s acclaimed series, which was adapted into an anime in 2010 before becoming an English-language bestseller in 2016. More details will be released soon about the set, which readers will be able to enjoy in time for the holiday season in 2019. Kodansha is also publishing Higashimura’s new series Tokyo Tarareba Girls in print, with the fourth volume due out on Dec. 18 and already available digitally.

Also coming in 2019, Kodansha said, are two new manga based upon popular video game franchises: a four-volume adaptation of popular RPG Tales of Berseria, by artist Nobu Aonagi, and a two-volume series based on Type-Moon‘s popular mobile game Fate/Grand Order, titled Fate/Grand Order -mortalis:stella, by creator Shiramine.

Anime NYC brings celebration of Japanese culture & anime to Javits Center – 11/17-19

LeftField Media will present a massive three-day celebration of Japanese animation and culture this fall at the inaugural Anime NYC convention powered by Crunchyroll, coming to New York City’s Javits Center (655 W 34th St) from Friday, November 17 through Sunday, November 19. Attendees will be able to view exclusive anime screenings and meet major guests courtesy of international animation and manga publishers like Aniplex, Bandai Visual, Crunchyroll, Funimation, Sentai Filmworks, Sunrise, Yen Press, and VIZ Media; play the latest in Japanese gaming technology; chow down on Japanese delicacies and fusion cuisine; rock out to musical guests direct from Tokyo; and more. Tickets are available with general admission tickets priced from $35-60, and with VIP tickets priced at $275 guaranteeing access to premiere programming and special guests.

LeftField Media looks to fill a void with Anime NYC. While most major cities in America play host to anime-specific conventions, New York City – America’s largest city – has no large, dedicated celebration of Japanese animation and culture. Anime NYC powered by Crunchyroll has been in planning for over a year with tremendous support from partners in both America and Japan, and anticipates bringing together almost 20,000 fans at its inaugural convention. Anime has had a presence in American entertainment for decades in the form of beloved series like Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, and Sailor Moon and films from acclaimed directors like Hayao Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon, and has seen broader audiences tuning in recently to watch hits like Attack on Titan, One-Punch Man, and Yuri!!! on Ice on services like Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll.

Anime NYC powered by Crunchyroll puts Japanese culture and animation on a massive international stage in New York City, at a time when the anime industry is burgeoning worldwide. The Anime Industry Report 2016 from the Association of Japanese Animators estimated the overseas anime industry (excluding Japan) generated $288.4 million USD in 2015, an increase of over $125 million from 2014. Anime represents a growing stake in the entertainment industry both worldwide and notably in America, with the Anime Industry Report 2016 reporting more anime licensing contracts filed in 2015 in the United States than in any other country.
