In every good mystery, there’s a moment when the detective confronts the suspects to try and figure out which of them is the killer. But generally speaking, the suspects aren’t powerful enough to fly you five miles straight up, rip off your limbs, and drop you into the Atlantic. That’s the problem faced by Lieutenant Detective John Riley, when he finally comes face-to-face with the Protectors, one of whom may have murdered the Huntsman. Meanwhile, an autopsy on a woman presumed to have died in a boating accident reveals a grisly connection to the Protectors…

Review – Witchblade: Due Process

Witchblade: Due Process #1 COVA_stampedWitchblade: Due Process is a one shot that I went into with a lot of high hopes (maybe too high).  The premise was very promising.  Sara Pezzini has to deal with a person she wrongly sent to jail.  Of course there’s a “super power” element to it, with the person in question having made a deal with a possibly evil presence.

Sara has to make amends with an innocent man she sent to prison.

Before young Sara Pezzini was called to bear the Witchblade she made a horrible mistake that destroyed a man’s life. Today that man is being released from prison and has to put the pieces of his life back together. In order to protect his family, this desperate father made a deal with demonic forces, and now it is time to pay. When Sara tries to reach out and make her past wrong right, she’s confronted by demonic forces. The stakes: a man’s very soul.

I was expecting a pretty deep introspective look at Pezzini and her actions and how she’s dealing with her actions.  At the same time I’d also expect a look at the person wrongly jailed.  We get that a bit, but interestingly the size of the issue actually works against it.  This one shot would of benefited as a lengthier graphic novel or a three issue mini-series.

The issue is good and entertaining, but it doesn’t get as deep as I’d hope.  The “super power” aspect of it (I can’t think of a better description) opened up such an interesting aspect to the various characters (I don’t want to ruin it) and then there’s the relationship between Pezzini and the jailed.  We don’t quite get it as much as I’d of hoped.

It’s an interesting read, but definitely could of gained from being longer in a different format.
