Kotaku has an interesting round-up of news, some of it dealing with future video games, but this nugget stood out the most. Take-Two Interactive, which owns Rockstar and 2K Games, has been making some moves that looks like they might be moving into something to deal with comic books.
Along with various trademark filings and domain registrations, the video game publisher also has hired Ruwan Jayatilleke, a former Marvel Comics executive who has a focus on digital media and more importantly their digital comics initiative. Since May Jayatilleke has been a “Business Development Consultant” whose purpose is “Architecting a covert operation.”
As Kotaku reports, there’s also some moves on Twitter by Jayatilleke that are a bit more head scratching:
Around the time Jayatilleke began his position at Take-Two in May, he reached out to a few comic book creators — Josh Dysart, Bryan Q. Miller, Robert Venditti and Ed Brubaker — on Twitter to inquire about whether they would be interested in an unnamed project. In one of the tweets, Jayatilleke refers to what he is working on as a “story dev project.” Given Jayatilleke’s experience in the comic industry, he seems like a likely candidate for helping a video game publisher branch out into the medium.
Video game companies have been very happy to expand their delivery of stories into other media including movies, tv and comics, and we might be getting one more player stepping up.
