Tommy Tallarico to Appear at MAGFest

MAGFest loves to bring out the best, brightest, and most colorful composers from the video game music scene, and Tommy Tallarico certainly fits that bill. It’s been five years since Tommy has attended a MAGFest event, so it’s a real treat to bring him back into the fray of the annual video game music mecca at MAGFest 12, coming January 2-5, 2014, in National Harbor, MD.

MAGFest is a four day long festival dedicated to the appreciation of video game music, gaming of all types, and the gaming community. The festival runs 24 hours a day, and offers consoles, arcades, tabletop, LAN, live video game cover bands, chiptunes, vendors, guest speakers, and much much more. MAGFest is run by MAGFest, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the appreciation of games and video game music. MAGFest Inc.’s main method of achieving this goal is to create events which provide a means for people to enjoy games, as well as musical concerts.

Tommy Tallarico’s career spans over 20 years of hits including Earthworm Jim, Metroid Prime, Advent Rising, and many more. Tallarico is also the creator and producer of Video Games Live, the world’s premiere touring orchestral video game concert event. Since 2005, Video Games Live has toured in countries all over the world, boasting a repertoire of over 60 different games in a wide variety of styles.

The third album from Video Games Live is currently in its planning phases, but needs OUR HELP to make it a reality. Show your support by chipping in to the “Video Games Live: Level 3” Kickstarter. The Kickstarter ends on September 13th, so move quickly before it’s over!

Tallarico joins a host of other guests and bands at MAGFest 12, including Bastion composer Darren Korb, Leisure Suit Larry creator Al Lowe, Swedish SID Metal group Machinae Supremacy, and Brazilian Video Game cover rockers MegaDriver.

That’s just a small sample of the dozens of guests, and almost 40 musical acts that’ll be performing at MAGFest. Be there, or be some form of polygonal shape that indicates that you are not there!

Review: American Vampire Anthology #1

American Vampire Anthology features eight amazing stories set in the world of American Vampire, with “lost tales,” new characters and old favorites. The list of creators is impressive and long. But, with so much talent, could this be pulled off? And could it be pulled with a high quality narrative that ties into the mythos that Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque have built? The answer is a resounding yes.

Each individual involved in this release is immensely talented on their own and together they not only entertain, but are able to flesh out the world that’s been set up for all these years, even filling in some gaps for characters.

And that’s what’s amazing about this issue. It can entertain with short stories set in the world of American Vampire, but also adds so much for those of us who have been reading since the beginning. It also shows that should Snyder or Albuquerque decide to pass on the series, that they have a long list of contributors that can do it justice.

There isn’t one entry here that falters at all. There’s not one misstep at all. The entries are all about even, with fantastic stories and amazing art. It’s beyond a complete package showing off the strength of the anthology and the issue makes the case for its inclusion as best “one-shot” or “anthology” when the end of year awards come around.

I could go on and on gushing about the comic, because it’s that dame good. This is a release that’s a solid for new readers as it is for long time fans and even though the issue boasts a hefty price tag, that’s worth the talent and quality with in.

The only negative I can say about this is, it reminds me how much I’ve missed my monthly American Vampire fix. Though if I can get more quality releases like this while I wait, I might be filled with bloody goodness.

DC Comics provided Graphic Policy with a FREE copy for review

Small Press Expo Announces the District of Columbia Public Library as the 2013 Recipient of the SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program

The Small Press Expo, the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons, is pleased to announce that the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) is the 2013 recipient of the Small Press Expo Library Gift Program.

This program is an outright gift of graphic novels to the library as selected by the library’s Collections Specialist, who selected 63 titles comprising 251 individual books. These books will be distributed to the Rosedale and William O. Lockridge/Bellevue branches.

Today there was a formal presentation of the books to the library by Small Press Expo Executive Director Warren Bernard. The event was held at the  Rosedale Neighborhood Library.

Ginnie Cooper, chief librarian for the DC Public Library said in a press release:

The library takes pride in offering the books that people want at their library. With the growing popularity of graphic novels, this gift allows District residents the opportunity to discover new titles and characters at their Library.  We cannot thank the Small Book Expo enough for this donation.

Bernard added:

It is with pleasure that Small Press Expo adds to the graphic novel collection of the DC Public Library. We are thrilled at the selections made by their collections staff and we know that the readers will enjoy them. We are especially proud that these books will find their way the readers of all ages who normally would not have a chance to see this great work being done in the graphic novel field.

The books were selected by the library’s collection staff from the offerings of publishers Fantagraphics, Top Shelf, Drawn & Quarterly, Adhouse Books and Koyama Press, all of whom support this program.

Artist and illustrator Kali Ciesemier designed a special bookplate that has been placed in all of the books donated by SPX.

SPX’s Graphic Novel Gift Program is an expansion of the philanthropic and charitable endeavors that are part of its corporate charter, and is in addition to SPX’s annual support to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The targets of this program are public and academic library systems in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area as selected by the Small Press Expo.

The goals of this program are:

  • Facilitate the availability of graphic novels to readers of all ages utilizing public and school libraries.
  • Promote learning and literacy through the availability of graphic novels at local libraries.
  • Provide library systems with additional resources by which they can purchase graphic novels and comics.

SPX will be held Saturday, September 14 from 11am-7pm and Sunday, September 15, 12-6pm at The North Bethesda Marriott Convention Center in North Bethesda, Maryland. Admission is $10 for a single day and $15 for both days.

Baltimore Comic-Con’s Annual Yearbook Returns!

tipin_letter_clrThe Baltimore Comic-Con is proud to announce the return of the Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook, celebrating the creators appearing at the show.  This book of art features some of our guests interpreting the Usagi Yojimbo characters, sometimes in conjunction with their own creations, in a celebration of creator-owned properties.

As a bonus, there’s a scavenger hunt of sorts. When you buy the book, you’ll get a list of our 38 Yearbook contributors and their table numbers. Get 10 of them to sign it, and come back to the booth for your choice of an added print by either Frank Cho, Ray Fawkes, Michael Golden, Terry Moore, or Mark Texeira! Usagi Yojimbo was created by Stan Sakai and first published in 1984, launching in Albedo, a self-published anthology by Steve Gallacci, followed by an appearance in Critters from Fantagraphics in 1985, and finally its own series from the same publisher in 1987, all in black & white.  In 1993, Usagi made the jump to color at Mirage Publishing, and moved to Dark Horse in 1996, where it remains to this day.  Nearly 30 years of Usagi Yojimbo have seen print in book, TV, and digital formats.

The art created for the 2013 Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook celebrating nearly 30 years of Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo will be auctioned at this special event! Baltimore Comic Con 2013: Kickoff it off with an All-Star Reception!

The inaugural All-Star Baltimore Comic-Con Reception will take place on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 8:00 pm, and we’re hosting an an all-star lineup of special comics guests!  Join us for this intimate evening, which is unlike anything else the rest of the weekend has to offer! On Saturday and Sunday, thousands of comic book fans will be meeting these creators in the hall.  Ticket holders to THIS event will be able to enjoy the company of these creators in a cocktail party setting.

The previously announced guests for the night include Mark Buckingham, Mike Carey, Paul Jenkins, Barry Kitson, George Perez, Stan Sakai, Louise Simonson, Walter Simonson, Mark Waid, and Bill Willingham.

Superstar artist Jim Cheung and award-winning inker Mark Morales have been added to the line-up of special guests for the evening! Jim has recently completed covers for Avengers vs. X-Men and Spider-Men from Marvel Comics, and Mark is currently inking Jim on the hot summer/fall Marvel event, Infinity, is nominated for Best Inker for Avengers vs. X-Men from Marvel Comics at this year’s Harvey Awards, and has won multiple past Harvey Awards for inking Marvel Comics’ Thor.

Matt Sturges, who made waves writing on both Fables and Jack of Fables, joins the all-star line-up as well. The Eisner Award-nominated Sturges, who became exclusive to DC Comics, has written Blue Beetle, Final Crisis Aftermath:  Run!, and Justice Society of America.

The exclusive event will be held at a 4-star hotel adjacent to the convention center, high atop the city of Baltimore with a wonderful view of Inner Harbor.

Bryan Cranston Denies Lex Luthor Casting

Bryan Cranston of AMC's 'Breaking Bad'

 

The internets have been rife with bogus reports (I refuse to give them the links) that Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has been cast as Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel sequel. Well, that isn’t really the case and that comes directly from Cranston. The Boston Globe caught up with the actor, with is currently playing President Lyndon B. Johnson in the American Repertory Theater production of All the Way, which begins previews Sept. 13., and brought it up in an interview.

 

Cranston was asked about essaying the bald bad guy, and he smiled. “I’ve heard that too,” he said. And what about those reports that he’s signed to play Luthor in as many as six “Man of Steel” movies? He laughed. “Six? This is all news to me. I think that maybe my name is bandied about because I’m known to be bald. ‘What bald guy can we get?’ The reality is they can take any actor and shave his head or put a bald cap on him.”

 

So, unless Cranston is playing coy, there goes the credibility of a few websites….

 

Gen Con 2013: Dungeons & Dragons Dominated Gen Con Indy

image001(1)Wizards of the Coast brought a hell of a presence and a bit of flair to 2013’s Gen Con Indy. They absolutely kicked off the show with a bang with a night with Dungeons & Dragons. The event was the official kick-off to their next big event, The Sundering, which promises to change the realm of Forgotten Realms forever.

Travelers from across Faerûn were invited to spend the evening in Baldur’s Gate at this one-of-a-kind event where guests mingled with D&D designers, authors, and other industry luminaries while enjoying food, drinks, music, adventure and more.

Before that event opened to the public, the press was invited to go over recent announcements about the product. There was a lot of focus on digital releases, especially video games. The Lords of Waterdeep was announced for the iPad, the DSCN3362franchises for game for the platform. The award-winning and critically acclaimed board game from Wizards of the Coast will make its digital debut in a high-quality, faithful adaptation from Playdek Games. Designed for 2-5 players, the game will offer offline play against others or computer opponents or online asynchronously or in real time.

One of the few reveals was a new Dungeons & Dragon Kre-O figure. the figures were first announce and unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con but some future figures were announced like the one I snapped a photo of. The line launches from Hasbro in January 2014.

Mike Mearls, Senior Manager, Dungeons & Dragons R&D, provided a hotly-anticipated update of the status of D&D Next, the latest installment of game play rules for D&D. Fans worldwide have been helping to create this new set of rules by participating in playtests and sharing results with the D&D developers. Mearls announced the final packet distribution, thus concluding the D&D Next Playtest.

With the end of those announcements, the event opened to the public, filled with D&D fans, the event was pretty impressive with an amazing setting. You can check it out below.
