Agricola Returns Bigger and Better than Ever in 2016

A2_Cover_3DAgricola, the award-winning and highly acclaimed game from designer Uwe Rosenberg returns in 2016 from Mayfair Games. The game is bigger and better than ever!

Throughout 2016, Mayfair Games will be releasing three Agricola products: the base Agricola game for 1-4 players; the Agricola Family Edition and finally the Agricola 5-6 Player Extension. Let’s look at each briefly.

Kicking things off in May is the Agricola base game, the heart of the revamped Agricola line. This game for 1-4 players features an updated and streamlined design by creator Uwe Rosenberg. The components are wood and the game features an expanded card deck with a “greatest hits” collection of cards from the original game and its expansions, newly revised and updated for this edition.

The Agricola Family Edition is the gateway to this classic game, being released later in 2016. This game for 1-4 players allows younger and more casual players to experience Agricola’s classic gameplay in 90 minutes or less! The Family Edition allows players to use actions and tiles but features no cards, giving them a streamlined game experience for the whole family and introducing a new generation to one of the greatest games of all time.

And finally, in late 2016, the Agricola 5-6 Player Extension will arrive adding wood components for up to two additional players for your base game – increasing the maximum number of players to 6!  Featuring even more cards handpicked and revised by Uwe Rosenberg, it will create the biggest and best Agricola experience yet!

Plans are also being made to make the new and revised cards available separately to players of the classic edition of the game.

Things will be kicking off this year of fun with an Agricola release weekend, May 2022, 2016.  Stay tuned for more details.

IDW’s Newest Creator-Owned Series Satellite Falling Debuts This May

Satellite FallingSatellite Falling, the latest original series on the horizon from IDW Publishing, kicks off this May, a month replete with creator-owned launches from the publisher.

The sci-fi-themed crime drama introduces readers to unique aliens, settings, and characters, wildly imagined by writer Steve Horton, beautifully rendered by artist Stephen Thompson, with vibrant coloring by Lisa Jackson. Satellite Falling tells the story of a lone human bounty hunter who jettisoned off her home planet after losing the love of her life, and now resides on a satellite spaceport full of aliens. Life, as she knows it, is about to take a turn for the surreal.

With Satellite Falling, Horton intends to explore similar themes he has tackled on past projects, but bringing those concepts to a more cosmic atmosphere. He promises “kick-ass heroines, wall-to-wall action, weird-ass dialogue, and amazing artwork.”

As mentioned, joining Horton on this off-world adventure will be his newest collaborator, Thompson, whose otherworldly art will effortlessly transport fans to an eye-catching universe like no other that instantly sets Satellite Falling apart from other sci-fi sagas.

Satellite Falling marks Stephen Thompson’s creator-owned debut, who jumped at the chance to take on art duties for this ambitious project. “Steve pitched a few concepts my way, and the idea of a single human working as a bounty hunter in a place otherwise inhabited entirely by aliens, haunted by her lost love was too good to pass up.”

In addition to Horton’s breathtaking standard cover for issue #1, retailers can also order a Variant Cover from Judge Dredd artist PJ Holden in addition to a Retailer Incentive Cover by June Brigman (Power Pack). That’s just for starters with more exciting variants on the way for future issues!

Satellite Falling will crash land at your local comic shop this May!

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Final Trailer Gives Us Better Darkseid Hints

A new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has hit the web and not only does it provide new footage (and footage that has me really excited for the film), it also gives us a hell of a hint at the debut of the villain Darkseid who has been hinted at being in the movie.

First, this trailer, plus previous ones, have featured these strange flying beings, which look a lot like Darkseid’s shock troops Parademons.

But, now we get this scene which features a large Omega on the ground, a symbol associated with the character.

We don’t know how Darkseid will make his debut, but it looks like we can expect a battle for the ages at some point.

Batman’s Biggest Secret: Bill Finger’s Legacy as Revealed by Marc Tyler Nobleman

BillTheBoyWonderFrA few weeks ago I attended a slideshow tour of New York City’s Superhero Sites with Danny Fingeroth at the New-York Historical Society Museum. Thereafter, I vowed to continue deepening my knowledge of the comic book world, and begin exploring the factual stories underpinning the industry I admire, but obviously know very little about.

Yesterday, I attended a presentation hosted by the 92nd Street YMCA in New York City: Batman’s Biggest Secret: Fighting for Bill Finger with Marc Tyler Nobleman (author of Bill The Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman). Who do I spot sitting about four seats away from? It was Danny Fingeroth; a good omen that I am on the right path–sorry, I can be superstitious.

20160209_204210.jpg

If a year ago you had asked me who Bill Finger was, I’d look at you with a puzzled face. DC said Bob Kane created Batman (after all it said so right there on practically every front page of any Batman comic), and that was good enough for me. Now, as of late 2015, it was officially announced to worldwide fanfare, that Bill Finger will be given credit for co-creating Batman with Bob Kane; and the next film (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) will include the following credit: Created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger.

Marc is directly responsible for making this happen. His continued detective work, and dogged perseverance, unearthed the last living family relation (a granddaughter Bill Finger never knew), who was able to untangle the legal contractual web that prevented DC from finally give him his proper due for co-creating Batman.

Marc began his presentation with the statement that Batman’s biggest secret is not Bruce Wayne as a metaphor for the industry secret (prior to 2015) that Bob Kane alone did not create Batman. He then, in painstaking detail, outlined Bill Finger’s tragic tale with tear-inducing emotion, but also with a sprinkling of light humor to even out the historical narrative.

Bob Kane was an artist, and Bill Finger was a writer. Together the two dreamed a new type of hero in 1939–a costumed Dark Knight who terrorized criminals. However, as Batman grew to become an iconic global super hero, Bob Kane’s fame and wealth grew beyond his wildest dreams, while Bill Finger (whose real name was actually Milton Finger) languished in obscurity and poverty. Marc, together with artist Ty Templeton, wrote a graphic novel, about the true story of how Batman began, and the larger role Bill Finger played in his creation. The book, originally published in 2012, aspired to get Bill the recognition he deserved.

In the audience, sitting right next to me, was an older woman, who during the question/answer session stood up defiantly to defend her friend, Bob Kane. Marc, took it with stride, pointing out that he was not vilifying Bob Kane as a person or private individual, but merely pointing out that as a professional Bob enriched himself on the work of others, and did not assign the proper credit to Bill Finger.

Then later, as I waited in line for Marc’s autograph, I chatted it up with another gentleman in a red polo shirt (his name was Robert van Maanen, and I know this only because Marc had posted an interview with him earlier today on his blog). He told me how Bill Finger, his neighbor, was a very easy going, affable, person who bore no one ill will. He also told me that Bill had a collection of old comics, including original printings of Detective #27, and the first appearance of Captain America with the triangular shield. He even said that National Publications (the precursor company to DC) one time called upon Bill Finger to donate an original copy of Detective #27 for a charity sale, and he did so without thinking about it, despite how he was mistreated by the company.

This was a very emotional night for me, and I had to hold back the tears while listening to Marc’s grim historical account about Bill Finger, his friends, his family, and his ignoble passing away. At least his memory and legacy has been righted by those who pursued the truth behind one of the world’s most beloved character: The Batman.

Happy 102nd Birthday Bill, and may you have many more here on this earth, and wherever your souls rests today.

Also, thank you to Marc and Danny for showing me the way to deeper truths behind the history of comic books; and for you readers who want to know more, visit Marc’s pop culture archaeological blog (where he continues to dig into the history of Bill Finger and his relations), and buy his book, Bill The Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman (and while you’re at it check out his other works on Superman too) .

Riverdale Announces their Jughead and Betty

It wasn’t long ago that news broke that The CW officially picked up the pilot episode for the live-action Riverdale television series based on the beloved Archie Comics characters. Now casting has begun and it has been announced who will be playing Jughead Jones and Betty Cooper.

Cole Sprouse, of Disney’s The Sweet Life of Zack and Cody, will be Jughead in the comic. Lili Reinhart will be playing Better.

Cole Sprouse Jughead Lili Reinhart Betty

The one-hour drama will be written by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and produced by Warner Brothers Studios and Berlanti Productions and has been described as a subversive take on the classic Archie mythos. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, Jon Goldwater, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa serve as executive producers.

The live-action series offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge, and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones.
