A head shop collectible store you’d think would go well with comic books.  At least in the stereotypes of so many it would.  Unfortunately at Kryptonite Komix (Carbon Hill, Alabama) you could buy more than just the latest funny books and bongs.  Owner Danny Wayne Barton was arrested for selling marijuana to police informants.

According to Carbon Hill P.D. Barton was charged with four counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance within a three-mile radius of a school.  Barton would face a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison if convicted.

Thanks for perpetuating the stereotype Danny, all of us appreciate it.  If you go to jail our guess is your new Kryptonite will be the soap.

Review – Witchblade #136

New to Witchblade?  Don’t worry, there’s a handy page that’ll catch you up.  Now you have no excuse not to pick up one of the numerous series written by wunderkind Ron Marz who’s the master maestro setting the course for the Top Cow universe.

The issue sees the third part of the Witchblade and Aphrodite IV team up as they take on Cyberdata.

“Pantheon”
Part 3 of 3, Guest-starring Aphrodite IV!
Sara Pezzini, the current bearer of the Witchblade, is caught between the deadly robotic assassin Aphrodite IV and the corrupt mega-corporation Cyberdata. Even with a mystical gauntlet at her disposal, will Sara be able to walk away from this encounter?

The issue leads directly into Artifacts #0 which was given out for Free Comic Book Day.  It’s entertaining, fun and has some twists I wasn’t expecting.

I’m definitely a fan of the Top Cow universe.  It’s well thought out, working as individual series or interconnected for a bigger story.  Take a dip in and check it out, you won’t be dissapointed.

Judge Dredd Does Cannes

Bookmark and Share

As numerous outlets are reporting a new Judge Dredd movie is being shopped around Cannes.  The movie is rumored to be in 3D.  From Deadline:

Andrew Macdonald’s DNA Films has made a deal with India-based Reliance Big Entertainment and IM Global to finance Judge Dredd, a 3D film that was scripted by Alex Garland, and will be directed by Pete Travis, best known for Vantage Point and Omagh. The film will be shopped at (Cannes Film Festival) by IM Global, in the first collaboration since Reliance bought a majority stake in Stuart Ford’s foreign sales company.

While Judge Dredd is perhaps best remembered for the forgettable 1995 action film that starred Sylvester Stallone, Macdonald went back to the franchise’s DNA to completely overhaul the film and bring it back to its origins as the UK comic created by John Wagner and illustrated by Carlos Ezquerra. Dredd is set in a futuristic world filled with violence, and the character is empowered to act as judge, jury and executioner.

The budget’s under $50 million, I’m told. This is the kind of project that you would normally find at a studio. This one looked like it would be done under DNA’s deal at Fox, but that deal’s going away, and Fox let this one loose.

We don’t care so much about a new Dredd film being made as this image associated with it from an old friend of ours Tim Bradstreet (we met Tim many years ago at Gen Con).  We’re huge fans of his art, and felt like it was a good chance to pimp out some nice Bradstreet art.

Muhammad Cartoonist Assaulted

Bookmark and Share

Swedish artist Lars Vilks was assaulted Tuesday as protesters interrupted his lecture about the limits of free speech.  Vilks first angered the Muslim community for his 2007 cartoons of Muhammad as a dog.  On Tuesday at a lecture at Uppsala University the uproar occurred after he showed an Iranian film that depicts the Prophet entering a gay bar.

A man jumped from the front row and head-butted Vilks breaking his glasses but leaving him uninjured.  Police were forced to detain or pepper-spray some unruly members of the crowd as other protesters yelled “Allahu Akbar” – “God is great.”

Depictions of Muhammad and the reaction from some in the Muslim community has been a contentious issue as threats of violence have resulted and have some times muzzled free speech.

  • Last month, Comedy Central edited a South Park episode in response to threats by a New York-based Muslim group Revolution Muslim.
  • Earlier this year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art pulled a collection of art of Muhammad to avoid offending Muslims.
  • Brandeis University professor Jytte Klausen says that Yale University Press prohibited her from using several 2005 Danish newspaper caricatures depicting Muhammad with a bomb on his head in her book “The Cartoons That Shook the World.”
  • Vilks was recently the target of a plot to kill him by the American dubbed Jihad Jane.

Vilks feels this is a point of principle and even though he sleeps with an ax beside his bed and his house is booby trapped, he continues to stand for free speech.

“This must be carried through. You cannot allow it to be stopped,” he told the Associated Press, saying he wouldn’t hesitate to give the address again.

Unfortunately it seems this extremism is having an effect as Comedy Central edited the South Park episode and Uppsala University said they would “not likely” invite Vilks again because of the incident even though Vilks would like to give the lecture a second time.

The irony that is some accept the threats under the guise of free speech and political correctness, while condemning those that offend, thus resulting in censorship.

Everyone’s raving about Secret Warriors:

“All of Hickman’s plot details fit together in a sensible, captivating way, and keep the title’s reputation as Marvel’s de facto slinky espionage book alive.” – Bryan Joel, IGN.com

“But the genius of this series is that Hickman keeps that stuff behind the curtain. The ‘secret’ here isn’t just in the title. I don’t know if Hickman does have pages and pages of diagrams to show how all of his pieces fit together — though I’m convinced he does — but it’s the promise of the mystery that makes this series so compelling.” – Timothy Callahan, ComicBookResources.com

“[Vitti] emphasizes realistic characters and believable, but stylish, settings…For a Marvel debut, his work is stunning.” – Paul Brian McCoy, ComicsBulletin.com

Just what’s happened that forces Steve Rogers and the Secret Warriors together? Are the Howling Commandos headed for the history books? Find out when the Secret Warriors enter the Heroic Age in Secret Warriors #17!

What We Can Learn From Batman About Immigration

Bookmark and Share

Bryan Young of the comics blog Big Shiny Robot has a piece up at the Huffington Post about lessons we (though he says Conservatives) can learn from Batman concerning illegal immigration.

Citing a line by the villain Clayface in the Neil Gaiman written Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?

He died saving the city. No, that’s not true. He saved the city, he died saving me. I said, ‘I’m not worth it.” And he said, ‘Everyone’s worth it.

Young makes his argument that “as long as you’re a person, you’re worth saving, worth protecting, worth welcoming with open arms.”  The biggest issue with this line of thinking is, that even though Batman may defend the city, he still beats the crap out of the people who break the law.  Sure he protects the weak, but he also jails those that break the rules.

I think the better argument to make is to focus on Superman and taking his example.  The ultimate illegal alien, he defends humanity when he could enslave it.  He steps up and defends the his adopted land no matter what.  And for this he’s loved.  Show the love for your adopted nation like Superman, and it’ll defend you in return, like Batman.
