Scheduled to be in stores June 30, 2010, The Darkness: Origins Volume 2 continues the rebranding presented as part of the publisher’s “Origins” trade paperback line reprinting of classic Top Cow Universe stories that includes the recently released Witchblade: Origins Volume 1 and 2, and The Darkness: Origins Volume 1 trade paperbacks.

Ulysses Censored for the iTunes App Store

A comic adaptation of James Joyce’s Ulysses is finally on the iTunes App store, but only after jumping through some hurdles. Apple demanded cuts to the content for it to be available.

Rob Berry and Josh Levitas launched the graphic depiction of the story which contained cartoon nudity. The pair had to remove the nudity before Apple would approve the app. Apples guidelines demand no nudity.

Ulysses is no stranger to censorship as it was part of one of the most important court cases on the issue. In 1920 after the US magazine The Little Review serialised a passage from Ulysses dealing with the main character masturbating, the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice helped get the book banned in the US for more than 10 years.

On December 6, 1933 U.S. District Judge John M. Woolsey ruled that the book was not obscene because it was not pornographic. This decision came after United States v. One Book Called Ulysses. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the ruling in 1934.

The creators cropped the image to pass Apple’s strict content restrictions, but the full images are available on their website for discussion.

The app is rater 17+ by Apple.

Facebook Censors Content, Makes Bangladesh Happy

This is a follow up to an article we ran previously on Everbody Draw Mohammad Day. Yesterday Bangladesh lifted a ban on Facebook after the company agreed to block content that the government deemed offensive. Depending on who’s reporting the ban was put in place due to images of prominent Bangladeshi politicians or depictions of Mohammad.

A Facebook group created controversy when it rallied people to draw Mohammad on May 20. The event was organized in response to the threats artists are receiving for depictions of Mohammed. The catalyst was the recent threats to Trey Parker and Matt Stone for their attempt to depict Mohammed in the television show South Park. The episode was later censored.

Facebook blocked access to the controversial images for users within Bangladesh, but they remain accessible for users in other countries. One man was arrested in Bangladesh over the political cartoons.

Pakistan still blocks the website.
