Comic Writer vs. Star Wars/Deadpool Actor in MMA Fight. Ronda Rousey takes on Gina Carano

Rousey vs Carano

In a match that feels like it came out of nowhere, Ronda Rousey will take on Gina Carano in a mixed martial arts fight. If you want a really intelligent take on the upcoming fight and what it means for Paramount, UFC, and Netflix, check out our friends at MMA Draw for a more detailed analysis. But, we’re taking it on from a completely different angle, it’s a comic writer taking on a former Star Wars and Deadpool actor!

Rousey and Carano are both experienced and well respected MMA fighters, both pioneers in women’s professional MMA. Rousey has a record of 12 wins and 2 losses and Carano has 7 wins and 1 loss.

In 2024 it was announced that Ronda Rousey was teaming with publisher AWA to publish her debut graphic novel Expecting the Unexpected with artist Mike Deodato, Jr. The release promoted it as:

…the graphic novel draws on Rousey’s incredible career in the ring and pairs it with Deodato’s martial arts background to create the most accurate and action-packed fight scenes in comics!

The graphic novel was originally crowdfunded raising $80,417 on Kickstarter from 966 backers. It eventually was released in October 2025 to comic shops and bookstores. AWA was initially funded by James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems and Elisabeth Murdoch’s SISTER media investment firm contributed funding a few years later. Yes, it’s those Murdochs, as in some of Fox’s Rupert Murdoch’s kids. Remember, Fox was purchased by Disney in 2017. We wouldn’t normally bring that up, but the meta pissing match between rich people in his MMA fight makes the dot connections all the weirder.

Gina Carano dipped her toes into the world of acting with a star making turn in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire in 2011 after also being in Blood and Bone in 2009 and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 in 2008. She joined the Fast & Furious crew in 2013 but really entered our orbit with her role as Angel Dust in Deadpool (at that time it was a Fox property, later purchased by Disney) and then Cara Dune in The Mandalorian (Star Wars is owned by Disney). Carano was eventually fired by Disney in 2021 for right-wing statements she made on social media leading to a lawsuit that was eventually settled. In the settlement announcement, Carano thanks Elon Musk for footing the legal bill.

Rousey vs. Carano will take place on May 16 and air on Netflix. Netlfix is currently winning bidder for Warner Bros. Discovery who is competing against Paramount for it. Paramount is tied into a business deal for streaming rights with the UFC and leaning heavily into that promotion. The UFC is buddy/buddy with the Trump administration and will have a fight on the White House lawn. The Rousey vs. Carano fight is being put together by Most Valuable Promotions which was established by Jake Paul. Paul, to his credit, has been a vocal critic of the UFC and it underpaying MMA fighters. Jake Paul’s brother Logan Paul currently works for WWE which also has ties to the Trump administration.

So, beyond having this weird world of comics and geek films, there’s also some underneath jockeying between rival corporations who will help decide the future of entertainment in their possible acquisition of WBD.

Star Trek: The Last Starship #5 Debates What’s Next for the Federation

Star Trek: The Last Starship #5

The Federation’s delegates have gathered. The Babel conference is on. Together, they aim to save Starfleet and bring peace to all quadrants. But while Captain Sato and the crew of the U.S.S. Omega have only experienced the passage of time as four months within their transwarp bubble, for the rest of the galaxy, it’s been 23 years. For 23 years, the delegates have been left to their own devices, to stew in their own machinations and to make new allegiances…and while the U.S.S. Omega may have brought them all together, the Burn has forced them apart. Not all want to broker peace, and someone who was once closest to Starfleet may become its greatest adversary… Star Trek: The Last Starship #5 starts the rebuilding of the Federation… or does it?

The Federation is in tatters after The Burn. Planets are wrecked, ships destroyed, economies barely holding on, famine increasing. The Federation, the status quo that was, held together numerous societies and planets in a mutually beneficial relationship that lifted them all up but it was all built on sand. Star Trek: The Last Starship #5 lays a lot of that out as delegates have gathered to rebuild the Federation after the calamity but makes it clear there’s little chance of it going back to the way it was.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, the issue focuses on some political tension as Captain Soto does what he can to help bring things to order and get the discussions moving. It’s clear that this won’t be easy and his rather positive view of the world betrays the reality that exists and the challenges that are now faced.

There are a lot of questions and maybe these only exist for casual Star Trek fans. One society discusses famine which seems odd in a setting where replicators exist and food can just be created. But, that might be answered easily for those more familiar with Star Trek and these societies. But, what’s interesting is the various topics and issues impacting each delegation and the answer to their problems… which isn’t really feasible.

There’s of course twists and turns as the future is debated. The end of the comic and what’s proposed feels like a new direction and proposed future with a vision that feels like it echoes the real world. Our world order has been strained and on the verge of collapse with new proposals and visions proposed. We face what Star Trek faces or is Star Trek doing what it does best in reflecting our real world struggles?

The art by Adrián Bonilla is solid and keeps up the interesting visual style of this series. There’s an almost pop art look with a bit of scratchiness to the look helped by Lee Loughridge‘s colors and Clayton Cowles‘ lettering. The series has a very unique style to it that helps it stand out from what else is out there. The colors pop and designs feel new but familiar. There’s also a sense of dread throughout the comic, just something is off, and that’s emphasized by the art. There’s a strangely ominous feel throughout the issue like something is going to happen and you can see that in the body language of the characters.

Star Trek: The Last Starship #5 is a solid issue that does what sci-fi excels at, examining our world. It also moves the direction of Star Trek forward in a major way and ends with an ominous last page (that probably hits a lot better for long time fans). It’s another great issue for the series that’s redefining the direction of Star Trek.

Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 Begins to Put the Pieces of the Puzzle Together

Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1

When an old acquaintance drags Logan into the search for a new abducted mutant subject, the terrifying methods of the defunct Weapon X program are revealed to be alive and well. As Wolverine follows the scent of the feral Tyler – and the scent of his own trauma – he finds himself in a deadly race against a super-soldier-creating corporation called PRIMEWARRIOR…which has just hired a very familiar face: the fully armed and upgraded NUKE! Don’t miss the first chapter of the biggest Wolverine story in years, one that will have a major impact on the future of the Marvel Universe! Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 is the latest piece of the puzzle of a major storyline hitting the Marvel Universe.

We know a major event is coming with Marvel’s “Armageddon” and it involves the boxes that give superpowers from the current Ultimate Universe. While there’s been some teases in the Ultimate comics as well as Captain America, it feels like Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 is the real start of the storyline with a main focus on what’s coming.

Written by Chip Zdarsky, who also writes Captain America, Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 focuses on Wolverine as he’s pulled into a mystery involving kidnapped mutants and a new Weapon X program. With teases as to who’s behind it, how they’re doing it, and some of the victims of it, the issue bounces back and forth between the present and Wolverine’s tortured past.

Zdarsky keeps things moving with not so much an amping up of the action, but what feels like a quick run as far as storytelling and action. Once this gets going, it’s an issue that doesn’t really slow down by much and instead keeps things moving as Wolverine attempts to hunt down a mutant captured and presumed tortured by the new program. The issue is a solid setup dipping into the past of Wolverine but also putting Zdarsky’s recent Captain America run in the spotlight by the end of the issue.

The art by Luca Maresca is solid with color by Jesus Aburtov and lettering by Joe Sabino. It’s not a flashy comic with tons of action and fights, but it’s just really well done with a look that has a slight grit to it. What’s nice is there are a lot of small details to help build on the story and that’s made clear towards the beginning where it’s pointed out Logan has glass on his cheek. It’s a heads up that this is a comic whose visuals will provide clues. But, the look, everything about it, is just really well done and solid where I’d like to see this team regularly take on Wolverine.

Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 is a nice debut issue but also a nice build up to whatever event is coming. It makes it easy for new readers to hop in but also builds on a lot that was been coming out in recent months in other Marvel comics. As far as prequels and teasers, this is a nice on that has me excited to see what comes next and to go back and see what I might have missed elsewhere.
