FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS AT COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL

OUR PLEDGE TO YOU: ALL COMICS, ALL THE TIME!

Your guide to signings, panels, new books, freebies, sales and more!

JULY 12 2010, SEATTLE, WA — Comic-Con is upon us, and it is time to spill the beans on some major news. Fantagraphics Books is excited to announce that at this year’s show we will have no celebrity tie-ins, no comic adaptations of summer blockbusters, no TV show spinoffs, no videogame companion books, and no major announcements regarding digital distribution.

We do, however, pledge to deliver more cartoonists, more classic comics collections, more original literary graphic novels, more high-quality foreign reprints of international cartooning, more graphic memoirs, more offbeat humor books, more envelope-pushing anthologies, and more and better books-about-comics and comics history than any other publisher on the floor.

Next week, Fantagraphics Books will close up shop in Seattle and relocate for one week to San Diego, CA for the 2010 Comic-Con International (to booth #1718, to be exact). With over 20 authors signing throughout the weekend – including the first-ever U.S. appearance by MOTO HAGIO, founder of Shojo Manga, as well as American comix legends CAROL TYLER, PETER BAGGE, TONY MILLIONAIRE ,THE HERNANDEZ BROTHERS and many others – as well as over a dozen new books debuting at the show, the weekend promises to be an exciting one for fans of comic books and graphic novels. Review – Frenemy of the State #2

Bookmark and Share

Frenemy of the State #2 (1)The mashup of Alias and Chuck continues with the second issue of Frenemy of the State #2.  An entertaining “girl power” comic that sees tabloid material Ariana dragged into the world of spying by the C.I.A.  Produced by Oni Press the comic book series is the product of Rashinda Jones, Christina Weir and Nunzio DeFilippis and continues to fun tone of the first issue.

Ariana’s test mission might have not have gone as smoothly as planned but her handlers at the CIA are running out of time to stop a weapons deal that could have grave consequences for several countries. Ready or not, it’s time for this socialite to jump into the world of international espionage while trying to avoid the “Spoiled Rich Girl” section of the tabloids!

The second issue picks up directly where the first left off with a rather improbably save from a falling building.  But the comic as a whole asks us to suspend disbelief in general.  Ariana then has to choose if she’ll continue in the spy business considering her first mission didn’t exactly go as planned.  After a very nice spin on how that decision is made she’s off the the Middle East to prevent the sale of nuclear materials.

The comic isn’t deep and pretty write by numbers, but it’s a fun read.  Its definitely one to pass off to a tween girl who might be interested in comic books and wants a strong female protagonist.  There’s lots of material here to mine, only time will tell what direction the creative team goes.

While we can’t say exactly who is behind this or if this was completely coincidental, something a bit fishy went down in comments on our review of the less than stellar Legends: The Enchanted by Nick Percival.  On Tuesday night starting at 2:33 am (my time) two quick comments went up.  If you haven’t noticed the site isn’t all that comment heavy.  Both comments came from the same IP address and one based off of the email address is based in the UK much like the creator of the comic (the publisher is based in the United States).

We did our due diligence and the comments have the same IP address which connected to a Netherlands based company.  Both email addresses are valid and one is clearly UK based.  Only the two comment IP addresses are connected, they are not directly tied to the creator or company in any way.  These could be posts from an overzealous fan.

The first post made a joke over how I read the comic book (on an iPad, which wasn’t ideal for this color scheme) and then posted a more positive review.  We go with what we’re sent for review copies and do our best to take into account if it’s an ideal platform to read the item.  Some companies put watermarks in which obscures art, but in this case the dark colors on dark colors made it hard to determine what was going on and the choice of colors for lettering made it difficult to read.  I’m fine with people posting other reviews, but please identify yourself if you’re associated at all.

While we don’t have a smoking gun the whole thing is fishy.  We mulled over if we should even post on this and consulted a few other folks.  But this behavior is unacceptable and should not be encouraged by companies, creators, etc.  If you take part in this site and do not identify yourself on this website you will be called out.
