Akira Failing in Love Vol. 1 is beyond adorable and had us rolling with laughter

A chaotic comedy of high school courtship between an awkward girl and a dorky boy too dense to realize they are already in love with each other.

Akira returns to the countryside for high school with a foolproof scheme to win the heart of her childhood crush, Hajime. Too bad they’re both fools in love!

Highlights of Akira’s carefully orchestrated strategy to court Hajime include covering his eyes with her hands, tricking him into saying her name, and making his heart race. But she might have better luck impressing him with her academic and athletic prowess. Or not. Because he’s too dense to figure out she likes him. And she’s too dense to figure out he likes her back!

The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace #1 Delivers Tense Political Horror

The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace #1

First, it was America…now, England. It’s 5:00 a.m. at 10 Downing Street. The prime minister gets a call that bolts him upright out of bed: The royal family has been lost at sea. Parliament and Buckingham Palace explode with action in the aftermath. Some suspect the prince and his wife, the princess, were attacked. Others whisper their tragedy was the result of a long-standing family curse…Either way, playboy and recovering addict Theo Belmont is next in line to the throne. Can he step up to the role? Or will he be consumed by his demons? The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace #1 is a tense debut full of emotion and mystery.

Written by Hannah Rose May, The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace #1 is a fantastic debut that’ll keep you guessing as to what’s going on. At its surface level, the story involves the mysterious disappearance and fallout of some of the royal family. Did they vanish due to a curse or was another nation involved? That alone could drive a series, with a focus on an investigation and the political impact of the event. But, May dives deeper focusing on the next in line to the throne and a past that haunts him.

The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace #1 explores trauma and addiction as Theo Belmont fights to stay sober while also clearly uneasy about his royal lineage. But, the crown that weighs is forced upon him as he’s declared the next in line for the throne and struggles with his addiction that has afflicted other family members. It’s a story of ghosts that haunt but ones of addiction and family trauma.

The comic delivers a perfectly moody look with the art of Kelsey Ramsay. With color by Heather Breckel and lettering by Jodie Troutman, the comic has a haunted style that perfectly captures its ominous feel. I can’t say anything as far as the details of the royals and England, but the comic nails a haunting feel and the visuals add to the tension that builds throughout the issue. The art is perfect for the overall vibe, adding to every emotional moment.

The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace #1 is the type of comic you can enjoy on the surface level or dive deeper in to. It’s a solid debut that’ll suck readers in, leaving them guessing as to where this could go. It’s a fantastic debut that delivers a haunting read as the weather warms up.

Imperial Guardians #1 Delivers a Familiar Concept but Fun Debut

Imperial Guardians #1

Gamora, Captain Marvel, Amadeus Cho, Darkhawk, Cosmic Ghost Rider! Five unlikely operatives recruited by Maximus of the Inhumans. Their mission? Protect the delicate balance of new Galactic Union by ANY means necessary…and failure is NOT an option. Expendable, deniable and disavowed, they are the Imperial Guardians. But can they do Maximus’ dirty work and keep their consciences clean? Why has a Kree Grand Admiral gone rogue and attacked Hala? What’s going on with Darkhawk’s mind? What deluded fool thought COSMIC GHOST RIDER was a team player? And, most importantly…what kind of game is Maximus REALLY playing? Imperial Guardians #1 doesn’t break any ground, but it does deliver an entertaining start.

Written by Dan Abnett, Imperial Guardians #1 brings together a rather motley crew to go on unofficial missions to help keep the peace. There’s a lot to like about the debut issue. The team’s members all bring something interesting to the table and something new when it comes to cosmic teams. It’s concept is one we’ve seen many times, taking X-Force in some ways, mixing it with the Avengers, and making it cosmic. Brought together by Maximus, the comic hits the beats you’d expect with little trust between the team’s leadership and Maximus and the initial threat being an extinction level threat. We get to know the dynamics while setting up a lot of what’s to come. It doesn’t deliver anything groundbreaking but it does deliver an entertaining read.

The art by Marcelo Ferreira is good. With ink by Jay Leisten, color by Rachelle Rosenberg, and lettering by Cory Petit, the comic looks nice and the action feels a bit chaotic, capturing the moments well. The characters are all recognizable and the choice to forgo team uniforms adds to the feel of the comic of a team that works together but doesn’t need to get along. This isn’t a tight unit like past Guardians of the Galaxy teams.

There’s some potential here as Imperial Guardians #1 feels like a black-ops cosmic adventure. The return of Abnett to the cosmic universe he helped shaped so much is welcomed and here’s hoping we get the sweeping epic he’s delivered so far. While the debut issue doesn’t really surprise, it does deliver a fun, somewhat safe, start that is a nice addition for the ever expanding cosmic portion of the Marvel universe.

X-Men United #1’s Strength is the Clash of Philosophies

X-Men United #1

WELCOME TO GRAYMATTER LANE, LEARN TO SURVIVE THE EXPERIENCE! “Build a school,” Charles Xavier told them, and the X-Men have done so – but in a manner nobody saw coming! Welcome to Graymatter Lane, a place where mutants anywhere in the world can come together in unity to teach one another the skills needed for their survival! With instructors including Wolverine, Beast, Prodigy, Magneto and more, and a campus unlike any before seen, it’s the crossroads of the X-Universe as a student body from across the globe works to take mutantkind to the next step in their evolution – and to cope with a brewing threat to all of their number! X-Men United #1 delivers an ok school experience but the clash between leadership is the interesting aspect.

Written by Eve L. Ewing, X-Men United #1 brings back the proper school aspect to the X-Men. With a twist on the actual “school,” the comic introduces the initial class and the teachers for an experience that has some potential but overall doesn’t quite excite. Where the comic does shine is the clear lines drawn as to whether a school should exist at all?

There’s some divisions between the leadership of the X-Men with Cyclops on one side and on the other, quite a few who want to continue Charles Xavier’s concept of a school. Cyclops has been shaped and shifted over the years going from the one you’d expect to follow Xavier’s “dream” without question to a leader who’s grizzled and a bit more militant. There’s teases here that this will be the conflict that defines the current arc of X-Men stories, and there’s potential for something interesting and transformative by the time it’s done.

For the most part, X-Men United #1 is an introduction issue. We get a lot of detail on the school with a focus on its security, which you know means it’s not secure. There’s also a new generation of mutants that don’t really stand out. And that’s where the issue drags. The characters, beyond their powers, aren’t really given much as far as a backstory which just makes them background characters and keeps the teachers in the forefront. It’s a class that’s set up to be forgettable. Add in with the opportunity to really pull from the massive amount of characters, the one that are in the comic feel rather standard.

The art of X-Men United #1 is decent. Tiago Palma packs in a lot and the school opens itself up for some interesting visuals. But, beyond a few pages and panels, those visuals never quite hit their potential. With color by Brian Reber and lettering by Joe Sabino, the comic looks nice but not all that exciting. It’s fine but not defining.

X-Men United #1 isn’t a bad debut but it’s also not exciting. It shows off some nice concepts and has potential to be something interesting but beyond the final page, there’s little that’s really memorable. With a mutant class that doesn’t really stand out, it’s focus is the teachers more so than the students. It needs to really define itself and stand out from what has come before and in this debut, it falls short.

North Carolina Comic Retailer Arrest Leads to Indictment

Grendel Tales Devil's Hammer #1

In November, a comic retailer was arrested, over a comic handed out during a Trunk-or-Treat event in Sunset Beach, NC. Kathleen Hinds Lincoln, co-owner of Marvelous Issues was charged and arrested by the Sunset Beach Police Department on October 31st for some of the material in the comics provided to attendees. A copy Grendel Tales: Devil’s Hammer #1 by Matt Wagner published in 1994 by Dark Horse is at the center of it all. The comic features nudity.

The case has been active since and kicked up in mid-February when an indictment was returned in the case by grand jurors. That does not mean that Lincoln is guilty, just that there’s enough evidence for the case to proceed.

The jurors for the State upon above the defendant named above their oath present that on or about the unlawfully, willfully and feloniously date(s) of offense shown and in the county did KNOWINGLY DISSEMINATETO E.H., A MINOR, WHOSE AGE WAS 6 AND THUS UNDER THE AGE OF 13 YEARS, MATERIAL TO WIT: A COMIC BOOK CONTAINING IMAGES OF MEN AND WOMAN ENGAGED IN SEXUALCONDUCT, WHICH THE DEFENDANT KNEW AND REASONABLY SHOULD HAVE KNOWNTO BE OBSCENE WITHIN THE MEANING OF NCGS SEC 14-190.. THE DEFENDANT WAS 59 YEARS OLD ON THE DAY OF OFFENSE AND THUS WAS 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER AT THE TIME.

With that news, an assertion for a speedy trial has been submitted by Lincoln’s attorney, an assistant public defender. Also submitted was request for a recording of all phases of the proceeding by the Court Recorder as well as a request of discovery by the defense, and a motion to sequester witnesses.

Based on the voting registration of Brunswick County where this trial is set to take place, it is rather conservative with a 2-to-1 Republican to Democrat registration which could make this a tough fight.

We’ll of course follow the case and update as it progresses.

Was That Normal? captures the awkwardness of trying to get to know someone and dating

Philip is searching.
For meaning. For connection. For someone to share a moment with.
By day, he works from a rented room. By night, he drifts through cafés and bars, dodging awkward chats with his landlady and hoping for something more. When he meets Gina, a local musician, things begin to shift. But relationships are messy, and Philip’s discomfort grows as he stumbles through miscommunications, emotional misfires, and the looming presence of Gina’s intense ex.

Add in a crumbling tower, gong baths (whatever they are), and the quiet ache of modern life, and you have a story that’s tender, funny, and deeply human.

UPS Wants their $330,757.76 from Diamond

Diamond is now in chapter 7 and everyone is getting their outstanding balances in so that they might get paid what’s owed them. After an initial filing introducing its lawyers, the United Parcel Service (UPS) has submitted a filing in an attempt to get the $332,236.30 it says it’s owed. That total includes $330,757.76 in shipping services and additional $1,478.54 in fees.

The filing isn’t just interesting for the amount, but the exhibit filed listing out the names and addresses of numerous comic shops. It also represents another bit into the apple and less that publishers might see for their claims.
