Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed was presented with a pair of familiar claws and struck a familiar pose in a video posted on Instagram.

In it, El-Sayed is encouraged to “show all those weasels who’s the Wolverine.”

Wolverine and Michigan goes back far before the University of Michigan’s sport program (Go Blue!). One theory suggests Michiganders were called “wolverines” by Ohioans during the Toledo War in the 1830s as an insult. But, instead of an insult, they leaned into it and made it an identity of the state.

No matter the origin, we look forward to Abdul El-Sayed showing Washington he’s “the best at what he does… bub.”
