Upstate follows Ryan Essen, a 31 year old in 2018, returning to her childhood home in the fictional Hudson Valley town of Heinrichville, New York. Her father is dying, her home is changing, and like so many millennials, she feels like the best years of her life are far behind her.

In the latest issue of Stephen Pellnat’s series, a German veteran of the First World War arrives in the early American twentieth century, distant from even himself. An unexamined life echoes forward in time, through an entire family; its present day iteration afflicted by patterns of behavior that are not quite the same, not quite different. Overlapping shades of the generational and the personal coalesce as the Upstate Winter Cycle draws to a close.
