Fan Expo Acquires Six Wizard World Comic Cons
Fan Expo has moved into role of the “largest producer of comic cons in the world” after they have acquired six conventions from Wizard World. Chicago, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Portland, St. Louis, and Cleveland will now all be rebranded as Fan Expo events starting in 2022. Wizard World will run its 2021 show in Chicago which is set for mid-October. The company will focus on its Wizard World Vault collectibles business going forward. Wizard World will participate in the Fan Expo events but in an unknown capacity.
Fan Expo runs 17 shows in North America with more than 1 million attendees between them and 10 million square feet of exhibition space. Informa is Fan Expo’s parent company.
The fate of Wizard World isn’t too surprising. The company has been blowing out collectibles in recent weeks often with crazy deals. The news of shows also generally dried up even before COVID was an issue. The acquisition by Fan Expo isn’t surprising as a consolidation and shrinking of shows was predicted by many after an explosion in the business in recent years. At one point, Wizard World was putting on 17 shows a year but had dialed thinks back to just four.
Fan Expo also runs Fan Expo Canada (Toronto), Megacon in Orlando, Fan Expo Dallas, Fan Expo Boston, Calgary Comics & Entertainment Expo, Fan Expo Vancouver, Toronto Comicon, Dallas Fan Festival, Edmonton Comics & Entertainment Expo, and more. Launching soon is Fan Expo San Francisco and Fan Expo Denver which was previously Denver Pop Culture Con.
