Review: Weird Detective #5

28940

Det. Sebastian Greene is determined to rescue his partner, Sana, even if it exposes his true demonic nature, but his only clue is the monster killing people all over New York. Can he find Sana, take down the killer, and protect himself from the powerful alien forces corrupting the NYPD?

Weird Detective #5 features more monsters than ever as Greene’s past life begins to seep through. I’m curious to see more of his past since it hints at a lot that we still don’t know. Was he a crooked cop? Was he working for the FBI? Or is there something that writer Fred Van Lente has yet to reveal itself?

The addition of more monstrous entities gives the art by Guiu Vilanova a subtle change. The odd bat like creature is a nice contrast from the tentacled beings that have appeared throughout the series so far.

There is an odd standout scene involving a birthday party that is near the end of the issue but to say more might spoil things. But, the scene plays the fish out of water aspect for amusing humor as Greene attempts to understand the ritual, to the looks of everyone around him.

Weird Detective lives up to its name and is entertainingly weird.
