Review: Legenderry Vampirella TPB
From the pages of Bill Willingham’s Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure… it’s Vampirella, the immortal horror heroine, neck-deep in conspiracies and corruption. Against a Neo-Victorian backdrop of zeppelins and petticoats, the raven-haired adventurer stalks an alternate reality of danger and darkness in a tale by David Avallone and David T. Cabrera!
Compiling Legendery Vampirella issues #1-#5 in one collection, filled with elements of steampunk, occultism, mad science, makes this one thrilling read. Oddly enough the only missing is monsters, created by the mad scientist Dr Monroe who is a villain that is seen throughout. Honestly I love the odd mixture of rogues that make “The Council.” It is a nice touch that clearly influences the story, and how it unfolds. There is a subtle nod to the Whitechapel murders, as well. However it isn’t a main event in the story but, ties in to some extent as the story progresses.
The art work has a nice balance of pseudo-science steam-punk complete with bright colored zeppelins. Why the zeppelins are all a shade is purple, is beyond me but, they stand out well against the semi-modern looking city landscape. All the characters are superbly well drawn, and dressed in mostly in Victorian style clothing. Of course there are some minor aesthetic changes, making them blend in with alternative history environment well. Honestly I like the change to Vampirella’s dress. It is refreshing difference from her normal skimpy outfit, while keeping the color scheme.
