Review: Mythic #1

Mythic01_CoverAScience is a lie, an opiate for the masses. The truth is, magic makes the world go ‘round. And when magic breaks, MYTHIC fixes it. Apache shaman Waterson, Greek immortal Cassandra, and cell phone salesman Nate Jayadarma are the crack field team assigned with keeping the gears of the supernatural world turning, and more importantly, keeping you from ever knowing about it.

Writer Phil Hester teams up with artist John McCrea for a new series that’s just a lot of fun. The series is a trip into the “dark heart of weird comics,” that takes a bickering team and puts them up against…. well, weirdness.

The concept isn’t particularly original, I can rattle off a half dozen comics with similar plots, but the team Hester has come up with, and the attitude that permeates the comic is fun enough to make it stand out. There’s just a loose goofiness to it all, not taking itself too seriously, and instead leaning towards a more comedic tone. The series is more Ghostbusters in tone and vibe.

Artist John McCrea brings a nice style that matches the tone well. We only get a few glimpses of the actual weird in the first issue, so to see how he handles that in future issues will be interesting. A lot of the series will rest on that look, along with the group dynamic that Hester has laid out in the first issue.

The comic might not be completely original, but it’s fun, and some times that’s exactly what you need and want.
