Thor: The Dark World has blasted past the opening weekend of the original Thor earning $86.1 million in North America this weekend. The original Thor opened with $65.7 million when it opened in May of 2011. The movie opened last weekend internationally and earned $109 million.

In the two weeks since it opened world wide, the film has already earned $327 million. The original movie earned a total of $449.3 million total.

Disney’s distribution chief David Hollis said:

It played in an unconventional way. The franchise is moving away from just fanboys and crossing into the mainstream in a way that makes out-of-school, out-of-work Saturday shows super lucrative. The combination of storytelling and very successful, inspired marketing campaign made it appeal to the broadest possible audience.
