Naomi has been a series that has flown under the radar. Each issue has been a combination of entertaining story and breathtaking art. Together, it’s one of the best debuts of a superhero in some time.
With her origin revealed, we finally get conflict and a villain who feels like an actual threat. Up to this point, Naomi has been a series about discovery and this last issue pivots a bit delivering what is the first real battle.
With a “season 2” coming, writers Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker give us that initial battle that has us excited to see more down the road. It’s a taste of what’s to come with a flair that evokes manga. While the series could have used one more issue, the finale has Naomi finding her “voice” in a sense. That’s been a theme for the series, one of discovery. And with that, Bendis and Walker have created a series that feels like constant wonder.
Naomi #6 really stands out for the art courtesy of Jamal Campbell. The sense of visual style evokes manga battles with over the top exaggeration and a look that has you feel Naomi powering up and delivering her punches. It’s a unique comic and stands out from the rest of DC’s releases. The art delivers the youthful energy of the story and combined with the story itself has that audience in mind. Campbell has stood out for this entire series firmly planting himself as one of the best artists out there currently. Every issue has rocked the visuals and this one is no exception.
Naomi #6 caps off a series too few people are reading. It delivers the magic that Bendis has done before with other characters and combined with Walker’s style, creates a first volume that has us excited to see what comes next. Along with art that pops from the page, this is a series that needs to be read and delivers on the excitement of an origin story that seems to be a lost art form. Along with a youthful voice and look, this is one of the best debut volumes of the year and we can’t wait for more.
