Marc Silvestri’s Witchblade #3 Uncanny X-Men #251 Homage Variant Revealed

Image Comics has revealed an exciting Witchblade 1:25 copy incentive homage variant showcasing artwork by the legendary Marc Silvestri, and paying homage to his iconic Uncanny X-Men #251 cover. This variant sees Silvestri revisiting one of his most famous covers and will grace the cover of Witchblade #3, penned by New York Times bestselling writer Marguerite Bennett, drawn by fan-favorite artist Giuseppe Cafaro, out from Image Comics/Top Cow Productions next month.

The longtime popular cover saw a spike in buzz online after the release of Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine movie last month. Social media buzz ballooned with excitement as fans caught the reference in a scene that replicates the imagery with Hugh Jackman’s character nailed to the “X.”

In Witchblade #3, Sara Pezzini grapples with the deadly powers of the Witchblade while corrupt cops, human traffickers, and supernatural conspiracies tighten the noose around her neck. A terrifying new hunter emerges in the form of Ian Nottingham, but is he here to save her, sabotage her—or seduce her?

Mini Reviews: Phoenix, Witchblade, The Rocketeer Breaks Free, Biker Mice From Mars, and the Powerpuff Girls!

The Powerpuff Girls #1

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

Phoenix #1 (Marvel) Stephanie Phillips, Alessandro Miracolo, and David Curiel showcase why Jean Grey is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe in the first ever Phoenix solo series. The story opens and closes with “Thor: Godbutcher” meets Superman vibes as young, basically space ex-vangelical girl named Adani comes into contact with both the life and death sides of the Phoenix. Miracolo and Curiel’s visuals are glorious for the Phoenix’s feats of restarting a sun or collapsing a black hole while they use grid compositions for more human moments like her and Cyclops’ long distance relationship. The hook of the series is so compelling, “What if a good god made one mistake”, and with a lengthy guest appearance from Richard Rider’s Nova, Phoenix #1 feels more like a cosmic book than an X-Book. It’s the first hit of the “From the Ashes” era. Overall: 8.7 Verdict: Buy

Witchblade #1 (Image/Top Cow) Marguerite Bennett, Giuseppe Cafaro, and Arif Prianto reimagine Sara Pezzini for the 21st century in a fragmented Witchblade #1. Most of the comic is standard noir/corrupt fare setting up for the big moment where Sara Pezzini wields the Witchblade. But then Bennett’s steady narrative captions and Cafaro’s powerful art really put me in the shoes of someone perfectly bonded with the Witchblade, which for most of the issue is like a body-snatching parasite hopping from person to person. This interactive experience offsets the steady, well-trod beats of the police procedural make the relaunch worth checking. Plus Marguerite Bennett’s prose is soulful and empowering. Overall: 7.5 Verdict: Read

The Rocketeer Breaks Free #1 (IDW) Stephen Mooney and Staz Johnson prove that the Rocketeer is one of the enduring “neo-pulp” heroes in this delightful new miniseries. Rocketeer Breaks Free #1 is mostly table setting starting with a thrilling action sequence and then establishing the new status quo with Cliff temporarily going to San Francisco to be with his girlfriend Bettie while she works on a film. Johnson’s art is photorealistic, but not stiff, and colorists Len O’Grady and Marco Lesko add an optimistic touch to Rocketeer’s big rescue scene. I also like Mooney’s approach to the whole secret identity thing ; Bettie knows Cliff is the Rocketeer, but she doesn’t like him doing it except when there’s imminent danger. Add in a couple colorful supporting characters, and Rocketeer Breaks Free #1 is modern retro superheroics at its finest. Overall: 8.4 Verdict: Buy

Biker Mice from Mars #1 (Oni Press)Melissa Flores, Francis Portela, and Leonardo Paciarotti revive the 1990s cartoon Biker Mice from Mars in this new miniseries. This launch issue balances toyetic, explosion-filled action with heavier content like a forever war, military conscription, and caring for a parent with Alzheimer’s. Plus the baddies they fight this issue are arms dealers. Like a box full of action figures, the characters are a little interchangeable, but the final scene hits like a “To be continued…” sequence in the 1992 X-Men cartoon so I’ll be back for issue two. Overall: 7.8 Verdict: Buy

Powerpuff Girls #1 (Dynamite) – As someone who grew up with the original cartoon, Powerpuff Girls is a fun and nostalgic read. Bubbles, blossom, and buttercup write down their destinies, feed into a HIM machine (Hmm?), and end up very different from the superheroes of Townsville. Artist Paulina Ganucheau revels in bringing the aesthetic of cute animals, film noir, and wrestling to the Powerpuff Girls art style while writer Kelly Thompson tells a high energy done-in-one tale with a fan-favorite villain. This is like experiencing a new episode of Powerpuff Girls, which is the highest praise for a comic licensing a cartoon. Overall: 8.0 Verdict: Buy

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

The Boxer Vol. 7

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Aria of the Beech Forest Vol. 1 (Yen Press) – The first volume is great and a fantastic fantasy series kids will enjoy.

Biker Mice From Mars #1 (Oni Press) – The classic animated series is back as a comic!

The Boxer Vol. 7 (Yen Press/IZE Press) – The amazing series continues with a brutal boxing match that shows us who the true monster is.

Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #1 (DC Comics/Elseworlds) – A new fantasy take on classic DC characters. We’re intrigued.

Destro #2 (Skybound) – The first issue was interesting expanding the world of G.I. JOE by showing off even more familiar characters. We’re intrigued to see who else pops up in this first issue.

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #308 (Skybound) – The series has been strong with action, paranoia, and a lot of chess. Add in great artwork and it’s one to not be missed.

The Last Wardens #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – A long-lost brother returns from the Vietnam War and he’s plagued by a mysterious and monstrous mutant and also being hunted!

Man’s Best #5 (BOOM! Studios) – Every issue has been great of this sci-fi series. We’re expecting the finale to be no less.

Namor #1 (Marvel) – Namor has been out of the spotlight for a while and this series feels like it’s going to put him right back in the spotlight with a new take.

Paranoid Gardens #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – Loo is a nurse at the most bizarre care-center in the universe. The staff are not entirely human, and the cases downright unearthly. Aliens, ghosts, superheroes, and more creatures plague its hallways as both doctors and patients and the hospital itself seems to be somewhat self-aware.

The Powerpuff Girls #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The classic animated series is back as a comic!

Ultimate X-Men #5 (Marvel) – The series has been fascinating, standing out as a horror take on the classic X-Men.

Witchblade #1 (Top Cow Productions) – It’s been quite a while since the series has been on the shelves and we’re excited to see what this update will bring and change.

Your Letter (Yen Press) – The best thing we’ve read this year.

J. Scott Campbell and Bill Sienkiewicz Witchblade #1 variant covers revealed

Top Cow Productions has revealed the much anticipated J. Scott Campbell (1/50) and Bill Sienkiewicz (1/100) incentive variant covers for Witchblade (2024) #1 by NYT Best-Selling writer Marguerite Bennett and artist Giuseppe Cafaro. Campbell’s and Sienkiewicz’s signature style will join the ranks of other cover artists like Giuseppe Cafaro, DANI, and Brad Simpson, and Witchblade’s original co-creator, Marc Silvestri, the CEO of Top Cow Productions, Inc. and one of the founders of Image Comics. These covers will help kick off this new reimagining which hits comic book stores this July 17, 2024.

In Witchblade #1, New York City Police Detective Sara Pezzini’s life was forever fractured by her father’s murder. Cold, cunning, and hellbent on revenge, Sara now stalks a vicious criminal cabal beneath the city, where an ancient power collides and transforms her into something wild, magnificent, and beyond her darkest imaginings.

Scott Campbell’s and Bill Sienkiewicz’s cover embodies Bennett’s and Cafaro’s “sleek, vicious, ferocious” and powerful new Witchblade – making viewers wonder how Sara will use this ancient power or whether she be consumed by it.

Witchblade (2024)  #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, July 17th, for $4.99 for 48 pages. The Final Order Cutoff deadline for comic shop retailers is Monday, June 24th, 2024.
