Review – Nosferatu

Bookmark and Share

There’s a lot I liked about Nosferatu.  95% of it is great, but there’s some issues I have with the ending.   Written by Chris Wolf and art by Justin Wayne, the story is inspired by the movie of the same name, this vampire tale is set in modern times with some interesting plots involving Homeland Security and a biological attack thrown in.

“Nosferatu” is a dark, edgy tale inspired by the film of the same name. This modern spin on the timeless horror story follows Tommy and her roommate Elle as the nefarious vampire Count Orlok draws them into his obsession with death and disease. Old-world magic combines with technology and terror alerts when Orlok, the Nosferatu, pays our shores a visit.

I liked it, a lot.  The characters are nice.  The fact that lesbians are thrust front and center is good as well.  It’s just the ending seemed a bit rushed and the attack seemed rushed as well.  The lead up is perfect, just my issue is there’s some plots are rushed.  Justice isn’t done and even with it clocking in at 112 pages it could of benefited from another 30 or 40 pages.

Overall, entertaining and worth checking out.  There’s tons of originality here and it’s very fun and it’s an original take on the vampire mythos.  Can we get an extended version?

Review – Blue Agave and Worm

Bookmark and Share

Blue Agave and WormWhere to even start with this entry from Viper ComicsBlue Agave and Worm is offensive, over the top, bizarre, and beyond entertaining.  Written by Kirker Butler with art by Beware of the Art Studio the story is about a Hispanic super hero who has to drink tequila to get his powers.

Albert Lopez, Jr. is a struggling LA stand-up comic who still lives with his parents.  One night while drunk on tequila, Albert falls violently into a mysterious agave plant and becomes “The Blue Agave,” Mexican superhero! With the help of his best friend and sidekick Tony (aka Worm), a 500-year-old burrow and copious amounts of tequila, Albert just might save the world!

The story is utterly hilarious playing with stereotypes and just addressing them straight on with racist statements that make great commentary.  I wish there was something deeper here but well the comic is just damn funny.  I found myself laughing out loud multiple times and immediately wanting to see what comes next.

The writing is great art really good and it got me to laugh multiple times.  The comic is fun, just really fun.  If you’ve never read a comic from Viper, I highly recommend you check this one out.

Stu Bear in the 25th CenturyTake Yogi Bear, Sleeper and smoke a lot of pot and/or drop some acid and you get Stu Bear in the 25th Century.  The comic book published by Viper Comics, written by Jeff Bushell with art by Beware of the Art Studio the comic is a rather crazy story about a bear who’s caught in an avalanche and wakes up 500 years later.

A freak avalanche turns Stu Bear’s annual hibernation into a 500 year frozen sleep.  Rediscovered and thawed, Stu finds evolved, hairless, intelligent bears, descendants of Stu’s brother, the new dominant species; living in floating cities above the Earth.  But as a seemingly incurable plague threatens to destroy all life, Stu finds he’s the only one who can save the day.  Beverly Hills Chihuahua movie screen writer, Jeff Bushell, debut’s his first graphic novel.

The story is really funny with a world flipped upside down.  Animals now rule and humans have devolved.  Stu, wakes up to this crazy world and has to use his abilities to save it.  The story is really humorous and art would fit perfectly in an Adult Swim cartoon.

I found myself laughing at moments and generally enjoyed the story.  It’s good for kids and adults will enjoy it too.  If you’re new to Viper Comics, it’s worth checking out.

Review – Hell House: The Awakening

Bookmark and Share

Hell House: The AwakeningHow the hell has Hell House: The Awakening not caused a bigger uproar!?  Published by Viper Comics, written by Chad Feehan and Ryan Dixon with art from Tsubasa Yozora the story is a subversive look at religion and particularly Christianity.

Every Halloween, hundreds of highly controversial, religiously themed “Hell Houses” open their doors across Middle America. During the first night of a Texas high school’s Hell House, a shocking and mysterious event occurs, leaving behind a small number of survivors. This motley crew is forced to battle their way out of the collapsing structure, while fighting against a terrifying and unspeakable force desperate to consume their very souls.

The comic debates Christian theology, how those who don’t share the same beliefs should act, hypocrisy (on all sides) and what happens when the Rapture really comes (with a bit of humor mixed in).

I really liked the smaller book format and the art’s pretty solid, but the story left me wondering out of what sick, twisted mind this spewed forth.  There’s a lot I’ve seen but that didn’t stop me from giggling at just how off (in a good way) the entire comic is.  And after all of the story, we’re left with one last kick by the writers in the final panel that got me to laugh out loud.

I’m sure a lot of people will say the comic is anti-Christian, but it’s not at all and actually holds up those that live what they preach really well.  The other folks out there are the targets of the book, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us next.

Inspector Gadget
JT1
Inspector Gadget is an animated television series developed about a clumsy, simple-witted detective named Inspector Gadget, who is a human being with various bionic gadgets built into his body. Gadget’s arch-nemesis is Dr. Claw, the leader of an evil organization, known as “M.A.D.”

Often cluelessly stumbling through any case he is given, Gadget frequently ignorantly makes foolish and insufferably clumsy mistakes pertaining to surroundings and current environment, mistaking innocent bystanders (and sometimes Brain, his niece Penny’s dog) for enemies, and believing that the real enemies are friends. His ineptitude always leads him into danger, but he always gets out of trouble through either his trusty gadgets, Penny’s unseen assistance, or pure luck.

The Test twins use their younger brother as a guinea pig for their various experiments (thus their surname of Test) in their secret laboratory, with which they try to impress Gil Nexdor, their pretty boy next-door neighbor.
