Absolute Superman #2 delivers more insight into this Man of Steel

Absolute Superman #2

The Lazarus Corporation sent their most battle-hardened crew of Peacemakers to locate the mysterious fugitive interfering with their mining operations–but they weren’t expecting one motor-mouthed, iron-willed woman to be the one to finally get the cuffs onto him! Absolute Superman #2 matches the excellence of the debut issue.

Written by Jason Aaron, Absolute Superman #2 is good, really good. Along with the debut issue, this is a one-two punch of excellence and one of the best starts to a series this year. Aaron’s Superman is familiar but different, taking the rooted fight for justice and expanding on that in many ways.

As we saw in the debut issue, this Superman is focused on the fight against oppression, standing up for those abused and misused, in this case by the Lazarus Corporation. In flashbacks to Krypton, we see how that caste system instilled the belief system we see acted upon in the present day. This is a Superman that’s both strong and timid, taking the combo of the Kansas farm boy and powerful being and instilling those qualities into one individual instead of splitting it between two personalities. While he can destroy armies, he also protects and is concerned with doing as little harm as possible and saving as many as he can. It’s everything that makes Superman super and a character we should look up to and emulate his fight for justice.

Absolute Superman #2 is a focus on not just Superman, but Lois Lane as well. There’s a bit too much of a wink and nod to her traditional role in journalism, this Lois is military and so close to bringing in Superman. Through her, we get a better sense of the qualities this Superman poses and through the actions of Superman towards her, we get to see how those qualities manifest. It also gives us a better idea of the split between his super powers and what his new suit brings to the table.

The art by Rafa Sandoval is amazing. With color by Ulises Arreola and lettering by Becca Carey, the comic is beautiful to look at, even through the destruction. Somehow the team has mixed the hopeful visuals we associate with the character with a slightly darker tone. It balances the character’s positivity and the bland nature of this world. The character designs are great and Sandoval’s focus on what to highlight in each panel and in each moment shines. It’s one of the best looking ongoing series right now.

Absolute Superman #2 is a hell of a second issue that is packed with action but at the same time is focused on letting readers to get to know the main characters. It delivers awe and ends with a shocking moment that highlight the good that’s at the heart of this Superman.

Black Lightning #1 fills a needed idea for the All In DCU

Black Lightning #1

Jefferson Pierce leads the Justice League’s new metahuman outreach initiative, helping those with powers before they can cause harm to themselves or others–but everything changes when its his own daughter, Anissa Pierce, who comes to him for help. With Thunder’s dangerous new powers and the new Masters of Disaster jeopardizing the coexistence between humans and Metas, Black Lightning is on the front lines of a culture war brewing in the suburbs of Metropolis! Black Lightning #1 delivers a new status-quo and direction for the character in the “All In” phase of the DC Universe.

Written by Brandon Thomas, Black Lightning #1 is an interesting comic as it really focuses on an impact of the “Absolute Power” storyline that’s been teased elsewhere. At the end of that event, something has gone wrong in the metahuman population. Powers have been switched up for some heroes and there’s more metahumans emerging. Someone needs to deal and help those new individuals, and that’s up to Jefferson Pierce, Black Lightning!

The issue is a pretty solid start with a concept that’s easy to understand and a role that’s a natural fit for the character. He’s a teacher at heart and here he gets to do that while helping metahumans in need. It’s a concept that has been there in some previous comics but in the current “All In” era, it’s something that’s not really being seen elsewhere.

There is a bit of knowledge that’s needed with Pierce and his family. While most of it is explained well, there is some things with a daughter that doesn’t quite hit unless you really know the characters. Still, a father working with a daughter and caring for his family is an easy thing to connect with and the comic does that well.

The art by Fico Ossio is good. With color by Ulises Arrelo and lettering by Lucas Gattoni, it has its moments though there are some issues here and there where the art isn’t quite as sharp. Where it’s good, it’s really good, which makes the visual bumps stand out. Characters just don’t look all that good or that art doesn’t quite drive home the moment. But, there’s action that’s exciting and moments that really deliver a cinematic quality about them.

Black Lightning #1 is an entertaining start with a concept that needs to be filled in the “All In” storyline. It shows a lot of potential and picks up a plotline that has been mentioned but not really focused on. It has a lot going for it and should be interesting to see where it goes after the debut.

Absolute Superman #1 is a bold new take on the classic hero

Absolute Superman #1

Without the fortress…without the family…without a home…what’s left is the Absolute Man of Steel! Absolute Superman #1 introduces the classic hero in DC’s “Absolute Universe,” delivering an interesting take with amazing art.

DC’s “Absolute Universe” is reimagining DC’s heroes in a world where they don’t have the tools, the expertise, the support, and more to help them in their battle for justice. It’s more of a back to the roots concept focusing on the core of DC’s classic characters with new origins and a new status-quo. Absolute Superman #1 introduces the Man of Steel with a backstory that’s familiar but whose initial mission is something new and very interesting.

Written by Jason Aaron, Absolute Superman’s backstory of an alien child sent off world from a dying planet remains unchanged. The specifics are different, but the basics are there. But, it’s Superman on Earth where the changes are really present.

Aaron’s Superman is hiding out, apparently destroying mining operations of Lazarus Corps. The company is abusing the local population to mine raw materials and Superman is interfering for some reason. That all leads to a confrontation and the introduction of a familiar character. Superman as protector of the abused working class is an interesting position to put the character in. At its heart, again its what reporters should be doing, but instead of investigating these wrongs, this is hands on action.

Superman himself is different in many ways. The character is younger and a bit more reserved. His suit feels more like something X-O Manowar would wear and introduces some familiar concepts but in new and different ways.

The art by Rafa Sandoval is jawdropping. With color by Ulises Arreola and lettering by Becca Carey, the comic looks amazing in every way. The design of Superman feels like a younger, slightly angrier individual, but also at its heart a hero you want to trust. The settings deliver detail that tell so much of the story and situations. When the action kicks up, it sucks you in and you forget about the world around you. Visually, it’s a “darker” take on the character but one that still feels like it’s fighting against injustice.

With Aaron’s attention to detail and focus on class on Krypton and Superman’s initial battle to protect exploited workers, Absolute Superman #1 is a hell of a start with a focus and statement to make. It’s the standout of DC’s “Absolute Universe” and a standout for all comics currently on the shelf.
