Everyone Wants to Kill Wolfhead in a new Incal graphic novel

Humanoids has announced The Incal: Kill Wolfhead, an irreverent and twisted tale of revenge, romance, and recollections featuring the fan-favorite rogue from Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius’ seminal sci fi epic The Incal—Kill Wolfhead—in a brand new original story from highly acclaimed writer Brandon Thomas, artist Pete Woods, and letterer Troy Peteri. Available in September 2023.

Kill Wolfhead has been called many things in his long, storied life—Lover (Galaxy’s Greatest), Fighter (Freedom and Otherwise), Entrepreneur (Five Franchises and Counting), and Intergalactic Hero (He saved the universe! Twice! At least!). But you don’t live that kind of life without making some enemies… And those enemies are now out for blood.

The Incal: Kill Wolfhead will be available in bookstores everywhere on September 12, 2023 and in comic shops on September 13, 2023.

Shazam! #1 kicks off with a fun start

Shazam! has had a bit of a weird time since his return to the DC Universe years ago. While there’s been some solid runs and stories, the character has never really stood out on his own. He’s felt like an also ran, not enough to really set the character apart from other heroes. Shazam! #1 plants a flag with a new creative team and a clear vision as to what the series’ voice is.

Written by Mark Waid with art by Dan Mora, Shazam! #1 embraces the character’s rather campy past. Walking works, mad scientists, atomic robots, alien worlds, that’s the type of villains and struggles Billy Batson and his alter-ego battles. The debut issue goes neck deep with talking alien dinosaurs, giant cups of tea, and overall, a rather fun, campy, and positive attitude.

Shazam! #1 is the bright spotlight in the rather dour superhero world. There’s something that’s just fun and goofy about the read that delivers pulp entertainment that entertains. It also catches readers up as to the status of the character after Lazarus Planet and teases the struggles to come. It does a great job as a first issue and invites readers to come back for more.

Part of the exciting, positive nature of it all is Mora’s art with color by Alejandro Sánchez. There’s something that’s both modern and classic about it all with colors that pop. The cheery disposition of the story is reflected in the art, you can almost feel the fun and smiles in the art. There’s also lots of detail in the panels and pages that will tease readers and long time fans will enjoy. It all works so well and helps put a punch on the ending which is emphasized even further with Troy Peteri‘s lettering.

There’s a positive and fun aspect of Shazam! #1. It’s just a great read that entertains and hearkens back to the silly pulp comics of the past. The creative team both celebrates the past and sets the series on a new path. It’s a mix of old and new that finally stands out from the pack. It’s a great comic that’ll put a smile on your face.

Green Arrow #1 kicks off with potential

The Emerald Archer is lost, and it will take Oliver Queen’s whole family to find him! But dangerous forces are determined to keep them apart at any cost! Green Arrow #1 spins out of Dark Crisis and thankfully you don’t need to read that event to pick up this comic. Unfortunately, you might need to know some Green Arrow history to really enjoy it.

Written by Joshua Williamson, Oliver Queen is missing… again. Whisked away to an unknown location, team Green Arrow is left back on Earth to help save the day and also try to figure out where Oliver is. Roy Harper, Connor Hawke, and Dinah Lance are picking up the slack while Green Arrow is off on an alien world.

Williamson does a decent job of catching readers up on who everyone is and what has happened. For those that don’t know Green Arrow, his history, what recently happened, or any other character, the comic acts as a nice primer. But, later on it throws in some reveals that feel a bit forced and at the same time make all the drama feel a bit more convoluted. It isn’t just the trio of individuals close to Oliver that are focused on, a fourth person comes to the table and with it moves Oliver’s part of the story forward but also feels like it’s just thrown in there. It’s a bit much overall but also has a sense of just rolling with it.

What stands out is the attitude and overall vibe of the comic. The art by Sean Izaakse with color by Romulo Fajardo Jr., and lettering by Troy Peteri has a whimsical fun aspect that matches the “voice” of the comic. There’s a pop sense to it all and the comic feels like it doesn’t take itself too seriously, instead delivering an almost pop adventure. It’s all a bit exaggerated and a little silly but the comic’s visuals and story feels like it knows this. There’s some solid panels and the art does a fantastic job of balancing the current action and flashbacks in its own style.

Green Arrow #1 is good and fun in a popcorn sort of way. It’s a story that feels like it’s made for comics with such an over the top history and current situation. There’s a pop sense about it, with a little bit of a feel like it’s a throwback to old school serials in its concept and in some ways its execution as well. While the debut doesn’t quite nail it in execution, it does deliver a fun read that’ll entice you to come back for more.

Humanoids has revealed an exclusive first look at The Incal: Dying Star, a brand new original graphic novel set in the universe of the legendary sci fi epic created by visionaries Alejandro Jodorowosky and Mœbius. Acclaimed author Dan Watters, artist Jon Davis-Hunt, and letterer Troy Peteri bring to life the tragic yet hopeful story of Commander Kaimann who leads a desperate mission of revenge while a millennium away, a Sister of Entropy faces certain death. Available in stores May 9.

Things are not going well for Commander Kaimann. The love of his life is dead, his home planet destroyed, his crew are ghostly apparitions, and his crocodilian mutation is taking over more and more of his body. Just as all hope may be lost, a chance encounter with a strange artifact connects him to Aurora, a fearless Sister of Entropy staring down almost certain destruction.
