The Oxymoron Strikes in Upcoming ComixTribe Anthology

THE RED TEN’s OXYMORON to Star in His Own Bloodsoaked Anthology

April 3, 2012 — Newburyport, MA — Maverick independent publisher ComixTribe announced today that it will debut OXYMORON, a graphic novel anthology featuring the psychotic contradiction-obsessed supervillain, at the 2012 New York Comic Con.The Oxymoron, a popular character from ComixTribe’s independently distributed cult hit series THE RED TEN by Tyler James and Cesar Feliciano, is being resurrected in this new spin off anthology, featuring nine short stories by hot up-and-coming writers and artists including Jason Ciaramella (The Cape, Godzilla), Mark Poulton (Savage Hawkman, Avengelyne), Joe Mulvey (SCAM) and more, and is being edited by ComixTribe publisher Tyler James.

“I knew as soon as we sold the first copy of THE RED TEN that readers were going to demand more Oxymoron,” said James.  “Rather than keep all the fun to myself, I reached out to a group of some of the hardest working writers in independent comics to help bring this character (back) to life.  The scripts are phenomenal–dark, twisted, zany, hilarious…and I’ve assembled a talented team of artists to bring them to life.”

While the full OXYMORON collection will debut at NYCC in October, ComixTribe plans to release a 28 page, limited run OXYMORON #1 in advance, through its established micro-distribution network comprised of retailers in the New England Comics Retailers Alliance (NECRA) and other indie-supportive retailers in North America.  ComixTribe has made headlines in 2012, opting to circumvent the traditional direct market distribution channel in favor of establishing direct partnerships with indie-supportive retailers for books such as SCAM and THE RED TEN.  “Savvy retailers are adding depth to their shop by stocking quality creator owned books like SCAM and THE RED TEN,” reports Larry Doherty of Larry’s Wonderful World of Comics, who has partnered with ComixTribe on New England Comic Retailer’s Alliance (NECRA) Variants for both SCAM #1 and THE RED TEN #2.

ComixTribe Expands Micro-Distribution, Doubles Direct-to-Retail Sales in February

ComixTribe Expands Micro-Distribution, Doubles Direct-to-Retailer Sales in February

February 24, 2012 — Newburyport, MA — Independent publisher ComixTribe announced today that it has doubled the number of retailers carrying its books this month, and will ship twice as many books direct-to-retailers in February as it did in January. Opting to circumvent the traditional direct market distribution channel in favor of establishing direct partnerships with indie-supportive retailers, ComixTribe books are now carried in more than 50 retail locations in the US and Canada.

On the heels of a strong January debut of SCAM #1 by Joe Mulvey, this month ComixTribe is releasing both THE RED TEN #2, the second installment of the ten-issue superhero murder mystery by Tyler James and Cesar Feliciano, as well as the 2nd printing of the sold out SCAM #1, featuring a new variant cover. “We couldn’t be more excited about where we are as a young imprint,” said ComixTribe Publisher Tyler James.  “SCAM has done extremely well for us, and orders for THE RED TEN are way up for the second issue.  ComixTribe has shipped more than 2,000 books direct-to-retailers in 2012, and we’re just getting started.” Both THE RED TEN #2 and SCAM #1 second printing debut February 29.

ComixTribe is one of a small number of independent creators and publishers pursuing a direct-to-retailer distribution model. “The micro distribution phenomenon is underway. Savvy retailers are adding depth to their shop by stocking quality creator owned books like SCAM and THE RED TEN,” reports Larry Doherty of Larry’s Wonderful World of Comics, who has partnered with ComixTribe on New England Comic Retailer’s Alliance (NECRA) Variants for both SCAM #1 and THE RED TEN #2.

While the direct market has sometimes been luke-warm to new publishers, many retailers are finding real value in carrying these books. “What I love about ComixTribe is that not only are they creating quality stuff, but they never stop hustling to promote it,” said Chris Proulx of Double Midnight Comic.  “THE RED TEN & SCAM have been very popular in our shop! They are selling better than mid-tier Marvel & the guys at ComixTribe work their butts off,” said Ernie Pelletier of Friendly Neighborhood Comics

THE RED TEN is a superhero re-telling of Agatha Christie’s classic whodunit “And Then There Were None.” The second issue, written by James and drawn by Cesar Feliciano, sees the “heroes” narrowly escape an explosion that destroyed of one of their own, only to find new and deadly horrors that await them on the island. The standard edition features a cover by CP Wilson, III (Stuff of Legend.) The NECRA variant features a cover by Alex Cormack (Chicara.)

SCAM is “X-Men meets Oceans 11″ and involves a team of super-powered grifters on the biggest con of their lives…taking down a Vegas casino and getting revenge on a former teammate who double-crossed them. The first printing of SCAM #1 was limited to just 777 copies, which sold out to retailers more than a week before release date.

“It’s been an unbelievable experience to have so many people enjoy the story I’ve been waiting for years to finally tell,” says SCAM‘s Mulvey.  SCAM #2, will be ComixTribe’s March release. Can’t wait until February 29 when THE RED TEN #2 releases in select comic retailers across North America?  The get your @$$ to Friendly Neighborhood Comics in Bellingham, MA Saturday, February 25 for a special PRE-RELEASE SIGNING EVENT featuring THE RED TEN creators Tyler James and Cesar Feliciano!

The Red Ten Exclusive Updates!

THE RED TEN #2 Hits Select Retailers February 29 and NO ONE is SAFE!

February 10, 2012 — Newburyport, MA — Creator-owned publisher ComixTribe has announced that THE RED TEN #2 will be on the shelves of select comic shops on February 29, 2012. Following up a January launch of SCAM #1 (IGN.com’s book of the week), this is the second month in a row ComixTribe will be distributing new material directly to its growing network of retail partners.

“We’re having a lot of fun with this,” said ComixTribe publisher and THE RED TEN co-creator Tyler James.  “We couldn’t have asked for a better launch for SCAM, and we’re thrilled to follow it up with the next chapter of THE RED TEN.  I don’t know what the ceiling is on DIY distribution, but considering we’re shipping more books in February than we did in January, I can say with confidence that we haven’t hit it yet.”

THE RED TEN is a superhero re-telling of Agatha Christie’s classic whodunit “And Then There Were None.” The second issue, written by James and drawn by Cesar Feliciano, sees the “heroes” narrowly escape an explosion that destroyed of one of their own, only to uncover new and deadly horrors await them on the island. The standard edition features a cover by CP Wilson, III (Stuff of Legend.)

Though indie titles are often a tough sell for many retailers, ComixTribe’s partner retailers are having success with these titles. “I’ve had pull requests for both SCAM and THE RED TEN,” reports Chris Proulx of Double Midnight Comics in New Hampshire.  “That’s an excellent sign!” Chris Humphries of Alpha Comics in Canada agreed, reporting “We sold out of SCAM #1 in a week, and nearly sold out of THE RED TEN.”

Review – The Hero Code #1 and The Red Ten #1

The theme for this pairing is “the,” just kidding, actually it’s two quality books independently published, but both would fit at a major publisher.  2011 was the year I really dove into “indie’ books and because of that discovered quality like these two.

The Hero Code #1

I’ll start right out and say, the comic is very familiar.  There’s the “Superman,” the “Wonder Woman,” the “Batman” type characters, but the way the story unfolds, how each of those characters are portrayed and especially with the solid art, I just don’t care.  I discovered the series on Kickstarter and happily contributed towards it, but when I saw the product I helped get produced, I was ecstatic.  This is a comic I’d pick off of the shelf or be excited to get in Artist Alley at a convention.  It’s quality.

The premise behind the series is that every human on the planet holds within them a genetic coding which grants the carrier great powers. The catch – this code only activates when we are faced with near-extinction level threats. The series explores ideas about time, reality, and what it means to be a hero.

The first issue is all set up.  Full of action that just pops off the page with amazing art.  I got to the end and immediately wanted more, a very good sign.  The comic is familiar, but there’s an excitement and energy about it that are missing at times from other similar books.  That feel makes the comic stand out and makes this one of my favorite finds of 2011.

The Red Ten #1

I’m not much of a fan of books.  I really didn’t like reading them growing up, so the ones I really enjoyed I could count on my hand.  Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians or And Then There Were None is one of those books I loved.  The Red Ten is the super hero version of that story, which makes me wonder why the hell that hasn’t been done before?!

When the world’s greatest detective is violently murdered by her nemesis, the world’s foremost super team and her former sidekick band together to bring the villain to justice. However, the mission goes terribly wrong, and before the night is out each of the ten “heroes” will pay dearly for past transgressions.

What was fun reading this comic was, I had no idea that it’s similar to one of my favorite books.  I got to the end and had a smile on my face.  It’s a murder mystery except anyone can be the murderer or victim and I’m expecting twists and turns like the book it’s based off of.  The art is solid, pacing great, everything is top notch.

This was another comic I got to the end and wanted to read more.  It was that good and that entertaining.  Here’s hoping we see issue two soon, I really want to know who did it.
