The Lion King Repeats at #1 While Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Gives Tarantino His Best Debut

The past weekend was the second straight weekend to top the same weekend last year as The Lion King ruled the box office. The film earned an estimated $75.5 million to bring its domestic total to $350.8 million after two weekends. Internationally, the film added $142.8 million to that total to bring it to $611.9 million. Worldwide the film has earned $962.7 million. It’ll soon cross $1 billion worldwide continuing Disney’s dominance at the box office.

In second place was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. With a $40.4 million debut, the film was Quentin Tarantino‘s largest opening. It beats the $38 million for Inglorious Basterds in 2009. The film received a “B” CinemaScore from the opening day audience. The crowd was 54% male and 64% aged 25 or older.

Crossing $1 billion this weekend was Spider-Man: Far From Home which came in third place. The film earned an estimated $12.2 million to bring its domestic total to $344.5 million. The film also added $21 million from the international box office to bring that total to $692.4 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $1.037 billion.

Toy Story 4 came in fourth place earning $9.9 million to bring its domestic total to $395.6 million. It added $19.4 million to its international box office to bring that to $522.3 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $917.9 million so far making it the fourth largest Pixar release globally of all-time.

Crawl rounded out the top five earning an estimated $4 million to bring its domestic total to $31.5 million. It also added $3.4 million internationally for an overseas total of $1.4 million. With a production of just $13.5 million, the $45.9 million so far is a solid return.

In other comic film results…

Avengers: Endgame dropped one spot from the previous week to come in at #12. The movie added $824,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $856.4 million.

Dark Phoenix improved on the previous week to come in at #22. It added $104,000 to bring its domestic total to $65.6 million.

The Lion King Debuts with a Record $185 Million While Endgame Sets a Record

As expected, The Lion King debuted in first place with an estimated $185 million setting a record for the month of July. The debut is the second-largest opening of the year and the seventh-largest of all-time.

The movie received an “A” CinemaScore from the opening weekend crowds which was 53% female and 50% of the audience was aged 25 or older.

The film also added $269 million internationally to bring that number to $346 million and $531 million worldwide.

In second place was Spider-Man: Far From Home which earned an estimated $21 million after two weekends at the top of the box office. Domestically, the film has earned $319.7 million and with $651.1 million internationally, the film is nearing the $1 billion mark with $970.8 million worldwide.

Toy Story 4 held on well and dipped to third place with an estimated $14.6 million to bring its domestic total to $375.5 million. Overseas, the film added $25.8 million to bring that total to $483.9 million and a worldwide total nearing $860 million.

Crawl came in fourth place with an estimated $6 million to bring its domestic total to $23.8 million. The film is in just about 26% of the marketplace internationally and earned $2.7 million to bring that total to just shy of $10 million.

Rounding out the top five was Yesterday which earned an estimated $5.1 million to bring its domestic total to $57.6 million. It added $4.3 million internationally for a total of $40.6 million total there.

In the biggest news, Avengers: Endgame is now the “all-time top-grossing film” officially passing the mark over the weekend. The film earned $1.2 million domestically over the weekend The total now stands at $2.79 billion and we’ll have more on that later today.

Dark Phoenix is still hanging on to the box office earning $183,000 domestically improving to #23 from last week’s #29. The film has earned $65.4 million domestically.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is this Summer’s Most Anticipated Film

Fandango has revealed the results of its Most Anticipated Summer Movies Survey, in which Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far from Home (the first Marvel Cinematic Universe entry since the game-changing Avengers: Endgame) was voted the most anticipated blockbuster of the summer.

The poll included more than 2,000 fans on Fandango who were asked to vote for movies they planned to see on the big screen between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend. Moviegoers named Disney’s The Lion King and Disney Pixar’s Toy Story 4 as the most anticipated family films, with Disney’s Aladdin, Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets 2, and Dora and the Lost City of Gold following closely behind.

Fans voted for Chris Hemsworth (Men in Black: International), Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far from Home), plus Zendaya (Spider-Man: Far from Home), Sophie Turner (Dark Phoenix) and Tessa Thompson (Men in Black: International) as the most anticipated actors in summer movies. Richard Madden (Rocketman) and Naomi Scott (Aladdin) were selected as the hottest rising stars in the movies, while Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw bad guy Idris Elba was picked as top summer movie villain.

If we learned anything from Disney’s 1994 animated epic musical it’s that hakuna matata ain’t no passing craze and neither are the loveable characters The Lion King introduced to the world. The Lion King gets a Graphic Novel from Dark Horse in June

Dark Horse has announced Disney The Lion King: Wild Schemes and Catastrophes, a new graphic novel anthology expanding on the all-new Disney movie, The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau. Written by John Jackson Miller, Disney The Lion King: Wild Schemes and Catastrophes takes you into the wild through the vast landscapes of the Pride Lands for a closer look into the life of young Simba and what awaits him as the lion king.
