Marvel and the Brooklyn Nets Unveil a NBA Super Hero

I’m not much of a basketball fan, and was going to ignore the release I receive about this, but it’s just too odd not to share as it has some serious creative talent (who I hope got paid well) behind it. Marvel and the Brooklyn Nets have teamed up to create the first NBA super hero in history, the BrooklyKnight, “protector of Brooklyn’s hometown team, defender of New York’s largest and most courageous borough, and ruler of Barclays Center.”

The BrooklyKnight debuted this past weekend t in the Brooklyn Nets’ first-ever regular season game in their new home, Barclays Center, against the Toronto Raptors. Before the start of the game, the BrooklyKnight boldly landed at center court to inspire his team and rally the crowd. To commemorate the first appearance of this historic new sports icon, Marvel Custom Solutions worked with the Nets to create BrooklyKnight #1, an all-new 32-page comic book by Jason Aaron, writer of Thor: God of Thunder and Wolverine & The X-Men and illustrated by artist Mike Deodato of Amazing Spider-Man and New Avengers fame. All guests at the game received copies of the limited edition comic book.

It looks like the BrooklyKnight will appear at all Brooklyn Nets home games and “support his team against the invasion of opponents.” I guess that makes him the team mascot? “He is equipped to handle almost any threat with a protective metal B on his chest, metal knee, elbow, and face coverings, defined muscles, including a six-pack, and a multi-functional cape.”

People heading t the Brooklyn Nets vs. Orlando Magic game at Barclays Center on Sunday, November 11, will receive a limited edition BrooklyKnight trading card, courtesy of Marvel Custom Solutions and the Brooklyn Nets.

ESPN The Magazine and Marvel Entertainment Present Lebron: King of The Rings

Let me start this off by saying, having been born in Cleveland, I shudder at promoting LeBron James in any way. That being said, I’ll swallow my Cleveland pride as this is news. Marvel and ESPN The Magazine have officially unveiled LeBron: King of The Rings, an all-new, full-color, ten-page comic that debuted exclusively in ESPN The Magazine’s NBA Preview on newsstands Friday, October 19. Two years ago, LeBron James predicted he would win not one, not two, not three … but seven NBA titles. What if he was right? In their second collaboration, The Mag and Marvel Custom Solutions have united to create LeBron: King of the Rings, an epic tale of zombies, clones, holograms, bionics and a star who will stop at nothing to fulfill his promise. yes, it’s that batshit out there, I feel like I needed to post this.

LeBron: King of the Rings springs from the minds of ESPN’s Ty Wenger and Otto Strong, writer Christos Gage and artists Mike Deodato, Scott Eaton, Greg Land and Terry Dodson. Featuring a cover by Adi Granov, this is the first comic book created in collaboration by Marvel Custom Solutions and ESPN The Magazine.

Marvel Teams Up With The Philadelphia Eagles & AAA To Honor Brian Dawkins

Marvel Entertainment, the Philadelphia Eagles and AAA are proud to announce the release of a special, limited-edition poster on Sunday, September 30th at Lincoln Financial Field in honor of NFL star Brian Dawkins. As one of the most beloved players in Philadelphia Eagles football history, Dawkins was known for both his excellence on the field and his love of Wolverine, one of Marvel’s iconic Super Heroes. This special poster, provided to fans as they arrive at the stadium for Sunday night’s game against the New York Giants, features Dawkins immortalized by artist Jorge Molina as the legendary X-Men character, complete with classic pose and Adamantium claws!

Eagles President Don Smolenski said:

Every week, Eagles fans witnessed Brian transform himself from a humble, mild-mannered man to the fearless competitor that he was on Sundays. He was a special player – ferocious, intense, fearless, intelligent – and on top of that, he was an incredible leader. His connection with our fans was one-of-a-kind, which is why we are excited to be working with Marvel and AAA to provide those fans with a souvenir that captures Brian in his element as ‘Weapon X.’

Brian Dawkins’ love for Wolverine is legendary and his passion for the heroic mutant well-documented in news features with ESPN, the NY Daily News and more. From a locker full of Wolverine memorabilia to his very X-Men warm-ups and poses on field, Dawkins tenure on the Eagles will always remind fans of the Super Hero often referred to as “Weapon X”.

Dawkins is a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, a six-time All-Pro and a member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team.

This Sunday, don’t miss out on the historic retirement of Brian Dawkins “#20” at the Lincoln Financial Field during halftime of the matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. And for fans in attendance, don’t forget to pick up your exclusive Brian Dawkins poster, created by Marvel Custom Solutions and compliments of AAA, as you enter the building! The poster will be unveiled on Comcast Sportsnet’s Daily News Live tonight at 5 pm.

Stan Lee Throws Out the First Pitch

On Friday, Stan Lee threw out the first pitch before the Washington Nationals took on the Philadelphia Phillies.  The game was rain delayed during the first inning for over 2 hours.  The Nationals went on to come from behind and beat the Phillies 8-4 after a home run by Ryan Zimmerman.

Stan LeeBefore heading a bit north for Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend, comic book legend Stan Lee will be throwing out the ceremonial first ball August 19th before the Nationals home game against the Phillies.  Talking to Comic Riffs, Lee said:

Hope I’ll be able to reach the catcher when I toss the ball. Is it okay to roll it?

But the appearance isn’t tied to the weekend’s convention, just a 45 minute drive north from Washington, DC.  Instead it’s to kick off the East coast literacy campaign for the Stan Lee Foundation.  The foundation is teaming up with local comic book shops to donate comic books to the areas kids.  The foundation’s goal is to help fight illiteracy in children, something comic books are playing a big part in more and more.

Lee sees illiterate and semi-literate children as handicapped in a world that’s ever more interconnected and one where you need every skill you can get.  Further Lee went on to say:

As one who has dealt with reading and writing all my life, I wish every young person could experience the satisfaction that comes with the ability to read, enjoy and benefit from the written word.

So, who wants to go see a comic book legend throw out a baseball?
