Scorched #6 Connecting Variant Cover Revealed

Todd McFarlane has revealed the Scorched #6 cover artwork, the final of the four connecting covers that pays homage to Jim Lee’s historic X-Men#1 covers. This marks the first time McFarlane has drawn a four-cover connecting artwork spread in his career. Scorched issues #3 through #6 connect to create one stunning piece of artwork commemorating Spawn’s 30th anniversary in 2022.

McFarlane’s Scorched #1, launched in January 2022, set the sales record for the “Biggest New Team Book” from the past 30 years. This supergroup of heroes and villains includes Spawn, Cy-Gor, Overtkil, Redeemer, Gunslinger, Haunt, Soul Crusher, Medieval Spawn, She-Spawn, and more fan-favorite characters waiting in the wings.

Joining Mcfarlane on this issue is writer Sean Lewis, artist Stephen Segovia, and colorist Ulises Arreola with lettering by AndWorld Design.

In addition to McFarlane’s cover, SCcorched #6 will offer two alternate covers, including a cover by Björn Barends and a magnificent Blank Black Sketch cover.

Spawn’s Universe Launches a New Trade a Hardcover Program to Celebrate 30 Years

The world of Spawn exploded in 2021 with four new record-breaking titles and is now set to expand even further in 2022. Todd McFarlane has announced an aggressive brand-new Spawn Trade Paperback and Hardcover books program, bringing fans new collections of past Spawn stories from the last 30 years and, for the very first time, collections of the four new record-breaking titles from 2021. 

Todd McFarlane Productions will release fifteen new comic trade paperbacks and hardcover collections this year, with more expansions coming in 2023.

Collections and trade paperbacks will include never-before-released titles such as King Spawn (the #1 selling comic issue in the industry in 2021) and The Scorched and Gunslinger Spawn (the #3 selling comic issue in 2021).

To celebrate the milestone achievement of Spawn’s 30th anniversary and Image Comics’ 30th-year celebration, McFarlane will release Spawn trade paperback and hardcover collections never previously released together. A limited quantity of Spawn Deluxe Hardcover Vol.5 will be personally signed by McFarlane himself.

Spawn Comics are Getting Black Sketch Covers

Todd McFarlane has announced a limited run of blank sketch covers on all four of his monthly comic titles in honor of the 30th anniversary of Spawn and Image Comics. In the months of April and May only, Todd McFarlane will debut blank sketch covers for the first time on three of the newest titles, King Spawn, The Scorched, and Gunslinger Spawn.

Todd McFarlane Productions will not only release a blank sketch cover on the three newest titles, but the regular Spawn monthly comic will also feature a blank sketch cover, which he hasn’t done since the record-breaking Spawn 300 in 2019. To commemorate Spawn #1 being released thirty years ago, McFarlane will also release a special blank sketch cover of Spawn’s inaugural issue. All the above covers will only include logos and pricing.

Before this year, Todd McFarlane has rarely offered these types of covers on the regular Spawn monthly book over the past 30 years. In addition to the traditional white blank sketch cover, McFarlane will release for the first time a black blank sketch cover for each of the four monthly titles too.

This will be the only time in 2022 retailers will be able to purchase these blank sketch covers (black or white versions).

Review: Gunslinger Spawn #2

Todd McFarlane’s Gunslinger Spawn has been a blast so far, tapping into the raw power of the early Spawn comics all while setting the titular gunslinger as an independent character within its universe. It’s been working quite well, thanks in part to McFarlane’s approach to character development via badass moments drenched in blood and violence.

The star of the show in this new series, though, is Brett Booth’s art. It’s gotten to the point that I can’t imagine anyone else taking on this Spawn other than him. In fact, Booth should draw Gunslinger Spawn till the end of time, and then continue doing so when time starts up again.

Issue #2 starts with the angel vs. gunslinger face-off that closed the first entry. A generations old feud is paving the Gunslinger’s path of destruction as he looks for the relatives of the man that left him to die back in his place of origin. Angels have descended to put a stop to his revenge mission, but they only seem to anger this Spawn even more. Ripped angel wings and shotgun blasts ensue.

The scripting is relentlessly fast-paced, with characters exchanging plot points through snappy banter and doing a fair bit of worldbuilding during action sequences. It keeps the story from feeling heavy-handed, although things feel a bit thin in the narrative department. It might become somewhat more complex as more playing blocks get thrown into the mix, but so far it’s pretty straightforward revenge tale.

Booth’s art on the other hand does wonders to elevate the storytelling, making each panel explode with detail and expression. It’s not enough to just say his work is kinetic. It’s moves and transitions like it has a life of its own. Characters derived from the original Spawn already possess that iconic quality found in the original design. Booth captures with the Gunslinger, but he adds a whole other level of presence to the character that allows him to forge a more unique identity.

Part of what makes this work is how brutal Booth’s pencils can be when capturing the rage and the emotion behind the Gunslinger’s actions. Al Simmons’ Spawn possess those same things, but there’s a sadness to him that shapes his existence differently. Booth’s Gunslinger has tragedy in his backstory, but red hot anger is his emotional anchor. This is a man that breathes heavy and walks with malice in his footsteps. Booth captures that all the time and it’s nothing short of impressive.

Gunslinger Spawn #2 is another great showcase of Brett Booth’s skills and they’re enough to warrant a purchase. The story itself might need a bit more kick to rise to the occasion, especially in the ‘man out of time’ aspects of it where the Gunslinger pokes fun at modern practices (which seems a bit forced), but the necessary elements for success are there. While the story catches up, though, you can just sit back and enjoy the art.

Gunslinger Spawn #1 Sees a First Printing of 393,000 Copies

“The Year of Spawn” continues with Todd McFarlane‘s new titles from the Spawn mythology, setting three record-breaking sales in less than five months. The latest record to fall was set by Gunslinger Spawn #1 when it became the biggest launch of a NEW SUPERHERO MONTHLY title in the comic industry (all companies included) in the past 25 years with the first printing of 393,000 copies.

Gunslinger Spawn #1 total sales are bigger than Marvel’s Spider-Gwen launch in 2015, and there hasn’t been another new character comic close to that number 20 years prior to that.

McFarlane’s Spawn titles also hold the following records: Spawn’s Universe #1 (June 2021) was Image Comics’ top-selling first issue of the 21st Century with a print run of 226,000 (and has since had to additional printings).

Then King Spawn #1 (August 2021) sales demolished The Avengers record, becoming the comic industry’s highest ordered monthly superhero launch in the 21st Century with a print run currently over 520,000.

The Scorched #1 release in December is slated to break another industry record for a new superhero team book. After 30 years of mostly just a single monthly Spawn book, The Scorched will gather some of the most popular characters from the past three decades and put them together in one title.

Gunslinger Spawn Hyped as “Biggest New Character Launch in 30 Years”

The NEW and HIGHLY anticipated Gunslinger Spawn series hits comic store shelves this October as part of Todd McFarlane’s ongoing expansion of the Spawn Universe. Much to the excitement of old and new Spawn fans alike, the title is expected to shatter even more comic book records, like the recent King Spawn #1, which sold over a half-million copies. This will be the third number one release that will climb into the #1 spot for orders in less than five months.

Early indications suggest this will be the single biggest monthly comic book launch for a new character in well over 30 years, which includes any superhero publisher, including Marvel and DC Comics.

The new comic title features Gunslinger Spawn, a man out of time who is unwillingly thrust 200 years into the future to the 21st Century. Not only does he have to navigate a new world, but he’ll have to deal with the demons of his past. No one is safe from his vengeance as he heads into battle with guns blazing as he tries to find his way back home.

Acclaimed artist Brett Booth will be the featured artist on this book, with additional art by Philip Tan, Kevin Keane, and Thomas Nachlik, with colors by FCO, Andrew Dalhouse, and others. Gunslinger Spawn #1 will feature covers by a roster of superstar artists: Greg Capullo, John Romita Jr., TonTon Revolver, Booth, McFarlane, and The Walking Dead creator, Robert Kirkman! McFarlane will take the lead on writing the regular ongoing story, and he and Aleš Kot tackle the back-up tales.

Gunslinger Spawn #1 cover G adds another level of excitement to this new ongoing series. With pencils by Booth and inks by McFarlane, this cover, along with both the King Spawn #1 and The Scorched #1 (releasing in December 2021), interconnects to form one epic work of art.

Gunslinger Spawn #1 includes a 1:250 retailer incentive cover for retailers who order 250 copies. McFarlane will hand-sign and create a unique sequential number for each issue just like he did for the record-breaking King Spawn #1 (based on the Final Order Cutoff total). Each signed Gunslinger Spawn #1 1:250 includes a CGC Certificate of Authenticity that retailers can send in and redeem through CGC to have their books graded. This is the only time McFarlane will sign the Gunslinger Spawn#1 1:250 incentive copy issue.  

Additionally, a Gunslinger Spawn #1 1:50 incentive variant cover by Capullo will be offered to retailers who order 50 copies.

For every 250 Gunslinger Spawn #1 issues ordered, retailers will become eligible to order five incentive covers of Gunslinger Spawn #1 by Capullo and one Gunslinger Spawn #1 McFarlane incentive cover.  

The Spawn character was first introduced in 1992, to a record-setting of 1.7 million copies that still stands today as the highest-selling, creator-owned comic issue of all time. Published by Image Comics (the third largest comic publisher in North America), the Spawn character also set a record as the longest-running, creator-owned comic on the planet when issue #301 was published in 2019. In August 2021, the newest Spawn Universe title King Spawn #1 sales numbers demolished The Avengers’ record and became a 25-year record-breaking new superhero monthly title launch.

Spawn Gets a Script Writer in Brian Tucker

We finally have some news on the long in the works Spawn reboot film. Brian Tucker has been tapped to write the script for the project. Tucker has one writing credit to his name in Broken City which starred Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Tucker is also attached to write the reboot of The Fugitive. Spawn creator Todd McFarlane wrote the initial script for the new Spawn film. McFarlane is looking to transition and direct the adaptation.

Joining McFarlane to help make the film a reality is Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions. Blum and McFarlane are producing and Carla Hacken is executive producing.

The film has been in the works since at least 2017. Jamie Foxx was attached to star and Jeremy Renner was to play the detective Twitch. With the delays in the film it’s unknown if the two are still attached.

Spawn is the story of a black-ops agent who is murdered and his soul sent to hell. He makes a deal to return however five years have passed when he does. He returns as a disfigured spawn of hell and must figure out his new role and powers.

Spawn had a previous film adaptation which was released in 1997 and starred Michael Jai White. An adult cartoon series was also released on HBO.

Spawn was one of the original launch series for Image Comics. Starting in 1992, it’s the longest-running indie comic currently. McFarlane has decided to expand his Spawn property with numerous spin-off comic series.

Each individual ultra limited-edition King Spawn #1 variant comic book will now receive a certificate of authenticity granted by CGC with each signed copy when customers submit their enclosed CGC coupon to have it graded and sent back to them with a yellow CGC SIGNATURE SERIES LABEL included (any fees associated with grading remains the responsibility of the customer). CGC will have an authorized witness at the signing with McFarlane and to further protect the authenticity and security of each signature, advanced measures have been taken so the COA cannot be replicated. Also, in order to receive a Signature Series grade the following instructions MUST be followed.

  1. Become a CGC member if you are currently not.
  2. Email the Signature Series team that you will be submitting your signed King Spawn #1 with COA to CGC. They will supply you with a simple form to fill out.
  3. Get your book ready for shipment. IMPORTANT: keep the COA and the signed King Spawn #1 together. The COA MUSTbe present to receive a CGC Signature Series grade. Don’t forget to add the form, from the Signature Series team!
  4. On the outside of your shipping box put the initials T M on all sides.
  5. Ship directly to the Signature Series team’s attention.

Each copy of the King Spawn #1 limited quantity Signed 1:250 Retailer Incentive variant will be bagged and boarded and individually signed and numbered by McFarlane. Todd will be flying out to the Diamond headquarters in Baltimore prior to the release to the book and will personally select the best-of-the-best condition comic for each customer to be signed.

Image will be shipping these variants as close to the release date of the regular King Spawn book as possible and will be packing them with additional care that they arrive at stores without damage. Because Image cannot guarantee that shipping damages will not occur in transit, there will be an opportunity for retailers to submit photo evidence of significantly damaged copies to their Diamond Customer Service representative at which point, Todd McFarlane will make every attempt to make sure that every retailer is satisfied with their book. Note that Image does not guarantee any specific condition or minimum grade on the comics received. Damaged copies will also need to be sent back in order to qualify for a replacement.

Todd McFarlane’s King Spawn #1 Signed 1:250 Retailer Incentive variant will be the lowest print run ever released by Todd McFarlane Productions. Additionally, each book will be hand-signed by legendary Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, and each book will have its own unique number on it. This is the only time McFarlane will sign the King Spawn #1 McFarlane retailer incentive issue. This incentive cover is exclusively offered to retailers that order 250 copies of King Spawn #1.

The release of King Spawn #1 is nearly three decades in the making and marks the first time a #1 Spawn issue has been available, in monthly form, in over 28 years. Issue #1 is a massive 56 pages thick with stunning art and action-packed storytelling.

King Spawn is Coming this August

Todd McFarlane will unleash an all-new comic book series—King Spawn—this August. This new title will continue the dramatic events from recent blockbuster Spawn’s Universe #1 and is nearly three decades in the making. King Spawn #1 marks the first time an ongoing, monthly Spawn series has been launched in over 28 years and joins an elite group of famed heroes—like Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman—with more than one monthly title devoted to the same character. King Spawn is projected to have even higher sales than the record-setting Spawn’s Universe #1.

To that point, one of the all-time classic fan-favorite villains from the original series makes his long-awaited return in the initial storyline of this new title.

An all-star creative team will help launch this series, including writers Sean Lewis, Todd McFarlane, and artists Javier Fernandez, Brett Booth, Philip Tan, Stephen Segovia, Todd McFarlane, and Marcio Takara. Along with famed cover artists Greg Capullo, Sean Gordon Murphy, Puppeteer Lee, David Finch, McFarlane, Booth, and a few more still to be announced.

Todd McFarlane’s Sam & Twitch is Being Developed with the Studio behind Mare of Easttown

wiip, the independent studio behind HBO’s hit Mare of Easttown, has partnered with Emmy-winning Spawn creator and director/producer Todd McFarlane to develop Sam and Twitch as a premium television drama series. The project will be based on two of the most prominent characters in the Spawn comic franchise, which recently broke the Guinness World Record for the longest-running creator-owned comic and has sold hundreds of millions of copies in more than 120 countries worldwide. This announcement follows the news that McFarlane’s newest comic project, Spawn’s Universe #1 is officially the biggest new title launch from Image Comics in the 21st century.

Sam and Twitch focuses on Spawn‘s two most popular human characters, detectives Sam Burke and “Twitch” Williams.

Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg will adapt the project and serve as executive producers. Smilovic & Katzberg are the creators and showrunners behind the drama series Condor, an adaptation of the 1975 feature Three Days of the Condor, which airs its second season on Epix in the fall. McFarlane and Sean Canino for McFarlane Films also executive produce with wiip’s Paul Lee and Mark Roybal.
