Atomic Robo disappeared two years ago when Tesladyne was invaded by Majestic 12 and transformed into ULTRA, a task force leveraging the U.S. surveillance and military industries against scientific pursuits deemed to be hazardous. Now, the few remaining Action Scientists finally have a plan to find Robo, but they’ve got to dive deep into ULTRA territory to do it! (And meanwhile, giant monsters from the sea might destroy all of civilization.)
Atomic Robo, from writer Brian Clevenger and artist Scott Wegener, is one of the few series through all the volumes that has seriously done no wrong. It’s a family friendly fun action series that has delivered every time. Each individual issue entertains, and each volume is a treasure to read.
Previously published at Red 5 Comics, the series is now coming out from IDW Publishing where it’ll hopefully find the audience it deserves, because seriously, the series is that good. It’s one of those comics I have no issues at all recommending to people when they ask what comics are good for kids.
This volume’s first issue is Robo free, but it’s still entertaining as the band is brought back together to find the missing Robo. While it helps to read what’s come before, it’s not necessary at all, and is easy to pick up (though may not be quite as enjoyable). The comic is action packed with a nice amount of humor, though maybe not quite the normal insanity that has come before, and that’s fine as the series is a bit different here too so far. We do have a while to go.
The art is fantastic as usual. Wegener always knocks it out of the park with each volume, and here’s no different. It’s perfect for the tone of the series and is perfect for both adults and kids.
Atomic Robo is seriously one of my favorite comic series. It’s so much fun to read, and reminds you comics are supposed to be exactly that. With a new publisher hopefully it’ll become more available and on more people’s radar, because it’s one of the series I have no hesitation at all recommending. This first issue of this new volume is no exception.
