26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards Nominees Announced

26GMA_long_r1a_0GLAAD every year hosts an award ceremony to recognize some of the best entertainment when it comes to the LGBT community with their GLAAD Media Awards, and this includes a category for comics. The awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives. They also fund GLAAD’s work to amplify stories from the LGBT community that build support for equality.

The nominees for the 26th annual awards have been announced and those being honored are:

  • Hawkeye, written by Matt Fraction and published by Marvel
  • Lumberjanes, written by Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis and published by BOOM! Studios
  • Memetic, written by James Tynion IV and published by BOOM! Studios
  • Rat Queens, written by Kurtis J. Wiebe and published by Image Comics
  • Saga, written by Brian K. Vaughan and published by Image Comics

The awards ceremony will be held on each coast, March 21 in Beverly Hills, California and May 9 in New York, New York. Congrats to all of the nominees!

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: Saga Deluxe Edition Vol. 1 (Image) -The series everyone praises is collected in this nice deluxe edition. If you’ve missed out, well…. here you go.

Afterlife with Archie Magazine #2 (Archie) – Missed the comics? Well here you go!

Bob’s Burgers #4 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Based on the cult animated series. If you’re a fan, check out the comic, it captures the tone perfectly.

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #125 (Dark Horse) – 125 issues in and Hellboy and his world are as fun and entertaining as ever. It’s beyond impressive to pull it off. Check it out!

Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor #2 (Titan Comics) – It’ll be a bit until we get a new episode of Doctor Who, but these comics help fill the void.

Dungeons & Dragons: Legends of Baldur’s Gate #2 (IDW Publishing) – Jim Zub loves D&D and it shows off in this series based on the popular role-playing game.

Lumberjanes #8 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – Just tons of fun. We need more comics like this.

Spider-Woman #1 (Marvel) – Marvel kicks off a new series featuring Spider-Woman. The past ones have been solid, and this one has had some controversy before its even launched. It’ll be interesting to see if Marvel can keep up the success its had with its other female lead solo series.

Winterworld #4 (IDW Publishing) – Welcome to the desolate winter world. Just a fantastic bleak story of an apocalyptic world. Absolutely under the radar of too many.

X-O Manowar #30 (Valiant) – Enter the Armorines! Valiant continues to put out one of the best comic universes out there, and this is a perfect jumping on point.

Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: Bob’s Burgers #1 (Dynamite) – The amazing television show comes to comics. Hopefully the humor translates well. The television is an underrated gem, and I expect the comic to be as well. I love the television show, so can’t wait to read this.

Black Science #8 (Image) – Fun action with every issue. I love this series. One of the best new releases this year.

Evil Empire #4 (BOOM! Studios) – Most series show the evil government after they come into power, this is how it gets to that point. With the world spinning around right now, this series feels eerily real.

Genius #4, Genius #5 (Top Cow Productions) – A beyond relevant comic that asks what happens if the world’s greatest tactical mind decided to use that to unify gangs and take on the establishment.

Hero Cats #1 (Action Lab Entertainment) – A  new all-ages series from Action Lab which excels at those releases!

Letter 44 #9 (Oni Press) – An amazing mix of sci-fi and politics. Writer Charles Soule looks at what might really happen if we detected an alien presence in deep space.

POP #1 (Dark Horse) – What if the world’s pop stars and celebrities were literally products, grown by the world’s wealthiest (and most depraved) minds—and one of them escaped? Sounds awesome!

Saga #22 (Image) – One of the best comics out there has shifted its focus a bit in this second part, and it’s still amazing.

Sundowners #1 (Dark Horse) – The new series by Tim Seeley follows a group of heroes where you really question their sanity. I came out of the first issue wondering what was real, and what wasn’t. It has me more than intrigued enough to come back for more.

Wayward #1 (Image) – Jim Zub breaks out of his fantasy niche to follow a young woman’s trip to Japan where she’ll take on various monsters. The first issue is a fun read and the art is fantastic.

Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out.

Pick of the Week: Outcast #1 (Skybound/Image Comics) – Kyle Barnes has been plagued by demonic possession all his life and now he needs answers. Unfortunately, what he uncovers along the way could bring about the end of life on Earth as we know it. A double sized first issue from Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta.

All-New Ultimates #4 (Marvel) – Contributor Andrew has been going back and forth on whether to jump into this ensemble cast of first and second string heroes and he just so happens to pick the swimsuit special…

Conan The Avenger #3 (Dark Horse) – Fred Van Lente and Brian Ching have yet to let up on their Avenger series. They’ve taken a slightly smaller, but no less barbaric, Conan and effortlessly shown his transition from drunkard to witch hunter to mercenary.

King Conan The Conqueror #5 (Dark Horse) – For our second Conan pick of the week, it has to be Tim Truman’s nearly-finished, exceptional Conqueror adaptation. In a classic Conan piece, he shows an aged King of Aquilonia tell the story of his rise to the throne to an incredulous scribe.

Letter 44 #7 (Oni Press) – Charles Soule’s masterful mix of politics and science fiction has been a hell of a ride so far, and few writers are able to pack in so much in every single issue.

The Midas Flesh #7 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – The fantastic series has hit it out of the park with each and every issue. Though it might have a cartoonish look, the subject is pretty heavy. Such a fantastic series and amazing start for BOOM! Box.

Ms. Marvel #5 (Marvel) – Easily one of the best debuts of the year and absolutely one of the best new characters to debut in some time. Hopefully the new Ms. Marvel has a hell of a shelf-life.

Saga #20 (Image Comics) – Did you read the last issue!? That last page alone makes this a buy.

Savage Hulk #1 (Marvel) – We’re suckers for first issues, and this looks like a fun read. Writer/artist Alan Davis is a one-man-band on this series…definitely worth a look.

Trees #2 (Image Comics) – Warren Ellis is hit and miss, and this series is an absolute hit. The first issue was a fantastic debut, and we expect no less from the second.

Review: Saga #19

Saga19_CoverComic Books are meant to be fun little escapes. They should make you laugh, cry, or both. They definitely should entertain and sometimes inspire. It’s a medium that belongs somewhere between a novel and a TV show, and in a class all its own. Saga is all of that and more. Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples have created a masterpiece and I can’t say enough to convince everyone I know, and hopefully anyone reading this review, that they need to read this comic book each month. The run has been on a short hiatus for about the past three months, but is back now and is just as great as when we last left Alana, Marko and Hazel.

Saga #19 begins what promises to be an amazing fourth arc. I’m sure there will be much debate from the first page illustration, but I believe it is one of the reasons that makes Saga so unique and original; the fact that Vaughan and Staples allow their vision to push and go beyond ‘societal’ limits, without sacrificing their originality, is one of the reasons I love this comic. Some of my favorite parts of Saga is when we get narration by Hazel and we get a lot in Chapter Nineteen with a clear view of how much she has grown since the first Chapter. We also get some fun pages showing us the history of the Robot Kingdom and how they got mixed up in the galactic war that Alana and Marko’s relationship helped fan the flames of.

Chapter Nineteen is also a great starting-off point for new readers. Although, I highly recommend you go back and pick up the first three Trades because the story and art are nothing like I have ever witnessed. Vaughan does an amazing job at weaving into this issue a helpful recap through Hazel’s narration, to bring anyone reluctant to start a series in the middle of its run, up to speed.

It’s no mystery why Saga is an Eisner, Harvey and Hugo award winner. Staples’ art is phenomenal and I can’t help but stare at each page in awe. Every landscape, facial expression and structure appears to leap off the page with her surreal illustrations. It mixes harmoniously with Vaughan’s rich story that I read each page three or four times. The three-month break the series took since the last arc was far too long, but did give me time to go back and re-read each issue. New readers of Saga are in for a big treat if they plan on picking up the first three Trades to catch up, but I’m sure that if you get Chapter Nineteen, afterwards, you will become a single-issue reader from that moment on.

Sell-Outs and New Printing Roundup

Lumberjanes is a hit! The series written by Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis, co-created by BOOM! Studios editor Shannon Watters, with art from Brooke Allen has sold out at distributor level and will be getting a second print. The comic will arrive June 11 with a new cover by Chrystin Garland.

It was like three number ones in one issue! Invincible #111 has sold out at distributor level. It’ll return for a one time second printing. It comes out on June 18, followed by Invincible #112 on June 25.

If folks can say they can get Saga #19 from the distributor, they’re lying. The Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples series returned this past week, and sold out at that level. It’s going back to press for a one time second printing. The issue will be back June 25, the same day as Saga #20.
