Bullets Fly Fast and Furious in Lead City

Coleman Cooper just wants to get his family to their new homestead, but a blizzard has other ideas stranding him and his family outside of the infamous Lead City. Lead City, where once a year the worst gunslinger’s in the Wild West arrive to battle each other for fame and fortune. Lead City is a classic western coming this spring from Red 5 Comics.

Lead City throws its every man character who doesn’t use guns or conform to the classic idea of a Wild West hero and throwing him immediately into the deep end. The contest begins this March and lasts through the summer.  Plan a trip to Lead City this spring, but make sure you bring a six shooter with you.

Lead City is a four issue series beginning March 2022 by creator and writer Eric Borden and artist Kyle Brummond.

Review: Mega #1

Mega #1

A gigantic creature has been awaken from its eternal sleep in Antarctica. The destructive monster, only known as “The Salamander,” has started a journey of chaos and destruction. The only thing that could stop this menace is another sleeping giant; a creature from under the ocean known as “Mega.” Mega #1 kicks off a kaiju disaster comic that’s good but doesn’t deliver anything special so far.

Written and art by Salvador Sanz, Mega #1 is entertaining enough. The comic is something we’ve seen before though. A giant monster that was slumbering is woken up and rains destruction down upon humanity. That even includes belching lava and climbing a building. It’s tropes and a plot that has been done again and again. That’s not necessarily a bad thing if it’s done well. And Mega #1 is pretty solid in that department. Its characters are interesting and how things are revealed are a bit strange and different.

Mega #1‘s reveals includes discussions in dreams which will hopefully be explained later. But, the weakest part is the person who unleashes the kaiju only explaining the person is “naughty”. You just generally need to role with what’s presented and so far accept what’s presented. And, let’s face it, we’re here for the military action and eventual kaiju vs. kaiju battle we know is coming at some point. Everything else are just steps to get us to that point.

Sanz’s artwork is solid. There’s a haunting dreamlike quality to it all. Mix that in with actual dreams that are presented in the comic and it all comes together in a way where you almost expect a character to wake up and discover it’s all a dream. The art is good and the characters rather unique with a look for each that feels like it tells us some of their story.

Mega #1 is a debut of which the details are some of the more interesting aspects. The dysfunctional aspect of the family creates a group dynamic that should make what comes unique in some ways. There’s enough detail delivered and enough focus on the family interaction that it has to play out in future issues. There’s nothing bad about the series. It’s an entertaining enough debut issue that fans of the kaiju genre should enjoy. Here’s hoping that as the story plays out that the series delivers something more than we’ve seen before.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

MEGA #1

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Apache Delivery Service #1 (Dark Horse) – Two haunted men are on a hunt in the jungles of Vietnam, searching for clues to a missing treasure trove of gold. A new comic from Matt Kindt, Tyler Jenkins, and Hilary Jenkins? Yeah, we’re in.

Cross to Bear #3 (AfterShock) – The series has turned out to be so much more than a secret org chasing Jack the Ripper across America.

DC vs. Vampires #3 (DC Comics) – The first two issues have been fantastic at the setup of vampires infiltrating the DCU and we’re hoping this one delivers a lot more action as they strike.

Death of Doctor Strange #4 (Marvel) – Who will be the new Sorcerer Supreme? We already know the answer but we want the details!

Deathstroke Inc. #4 (DC Comics) – The comic has been silly fun so far with over-the-top action.

Devil’s Reign #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was fantastic as the Kingpin’s plans for Marvel’s heroes comes together.

The Human Target #3 (DC Comics) – The series has Christopher Chance attempting to figure out who poisoned him and his been so good hitting the noir vibe.

Mazebook #5 (Dark Horse) – A father attempts to bring home his lost daughter. It’s been a haunting series by Jeff Lemire and we want to see how it wraps up.

Mega #1 (Red 5 Comics) – A gigantic creature has been awaken from its eternal sleep in Antarctica and only another sleeping giant can stop it.

Night of Cadillacs #2 (Scout Comics) – Our heroes Stiv and Hope flee supernatural gangs commanded by the sinister godfather Papa Duke.

Power Rangers Universe #1 (BOOM! Studios) – What is the true origin of the Phantom Ranger? And what is his connection to the Morphin Grid?

Stray Dogs: Dog Days #1 (Image Comics) – The first volume of Stray Dogs was amazing so to get any more makes us happy. It being so good? Yeah, we’re beyond excited to get as much as we can.

Swamp Thing: Green Hell #1 (DC Comics) – The Parliaments of the Green, the Red, and the Rot all agree: it’s time to wipe the slate clean and start the cycle of life over again. Written by Jeff Lemire with art by Doug Mahnke? Yeah, this is one to check out.

Task Force Z #3 (DC Comics) – Red Hood leads his own Suicide Squad of zombified villains. The concept is crazy and works so well.

Timeless #1 (Marvel) – Marvel’s 2022 begins here!

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Robin & Batman #2

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

BRZRKR #6 (BOOM! Studios) – The comic from launch has felt like a script for a film or show but it’s also been really good mixing action with a focus on its main character B and the weight of what he is.

By the Horns #8 (Scout Comics) – The series has a been a hell of a lot of fun delivering an interesting fantasy adventure that delivers action and humor.

Cloaked #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – An investigator is hired to find a masked hero who disappeared.

Download #1 (Red 5 Comics) – When Eric is hit by a mysterious blast of light from space, he suddenly finds his mind filled with designs for strange devices. The pitch promised 80s adventure and we want to see if it delivers!

Robin & Batman #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was absolutely amazing and we’re expecting more of that same quality.

Hecate’s Will #1 (Black Mask Studios) – Written and art by Iolanda Zanfardino, the comic follows a NYC graffiti artist who decides to quit but wants to create one last street art experience before she’s done.

Hulk #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was a bit out there in its concepts but we still want to see where it goes in this horror/comedy/sci-fi take on the classic character.

Just Roll With It (Random House Graphic) – Starting middle school is hard enough when you don’t know anyone; it’s even harder when you’re shy. The graphic novel features a character dealing with anxiety and OCD while growing up.

Third Wave 99 #1 (Scout Comics) – The story behind the controversial late 1990’s Florida surf brand.

Wastelanders: Wolverine #1 (Marvel) – Lets held back to the “Old Man Logan” world of Marvel!
