Review – Ryder on the Storm

Bookmark and Share

Noir is in and Ryder on the Storm written by David Hine and art by Wayne Nichols is the latest series to hop into the genre and it’s a welcome addition.  The series follows a detective who’s hired to investigate the suicide of a woman’s lover.

From the team that brought you FVZA, a special $1.00 preview comic for the upcoming 3-issue, bi-monthly, miniseries, brimming with elements of H.P. Lovecraft, mixed into a noir mystery.

Ryder on the Storm follows Ryder, a private eye hired by the beautiful femme fatale Katrina Petruska to investigate the horrifically bizarre suicide of her lover, Michael Hudson. Ryder’s journey to solve the case and finish Hudson’s work leads him to discover a truth more sinister and terrifying than he could ever have imagined – daemons walk among us. Now, he must team up with the last daemon hunter, Charles Monk, to take down the cabal of ancient evil controlling the city while struggling to reconcile the dark side of his own nature.

Even if this issue was a few bucks it’d be a buy, but for $1 it’s a MUST buy.  The set up for the mystery and hints of supernatural ties into the story are great.  The characters top notch and pacing near perfect.  This first issue is fantastic in every way and not only works as a comic, but I’d love to see it on the small screen.

For $1 dollar, you have no excuse not to get this comic, especially since it’s such high quality.

Review – The Rising

Bookmark and Share

This $1 issue teases what we can expect next year from The Rising.  The series is a mix of a bunch of different plots including the penal gang, a bit of Avatar and some War of the Worlds thrown in for good measure.

After years of war, economic chaos, and mankind, itself, teetering on the verge of thermonuclear extinction, an alien force invades the planet.  When a deadly virus is released, this militaristic empire massacres the world’s defense forces and most of the human population. The survivors are forced into slavery, helpless as they watch this new enemy plunder the remaining natural resources of Earth. Jarrett Jakes, chosen to fight and die as a gladiator, escapes from Zone R.X. 84 (formerly New York City) to lead a ragged band of guerrilla warriors in hopes of inspiring a downtrodden world to rise up against their alien oppressors.

The story written by E. Max Frye is interesting though really relies on the art by J.P. Targete as a lot of the pages have little to no words.

For $1 it’s kind of hard to go wrong with a comic book nowadays, it’s worth checking out for that alone.

Review – After Dark #1

Bookmark and Share

Earth is destroyed and a group of mercenaries must head out into the scorched planet to retrieve a messiah who just might be humanities last hope.  After Dark #1 contains a plot and cast of characters that are very much been there and done that.

From celebrated director Antoine Fuqua (Brooklyn’s Finest, Training Day), acclaimed actor Wesley Snipes (Blade) and award-winning writer Peter Milligan (X-Statix, Skreemer) comes the post-apocalyptic saga of After Dark!

Guided by an amoral drifter, a crew of jaded mercenaries must travel into the dark places of the ruined planet, and the even darker places of their own pasts, on a journey to find a woman who might just save the world. But maybe the world is past saving. And maybe the people who still inhabit that world aren’t worth saving. After Dark is a story of hidden demons and the passion for survival, set in a future that could very well be ours.

If you take a pot of rehashed post-apocalyptic movies and stereotypical characters and threw them together, this is the comic book series you’d get.  It’s not that it’s bad in any way, to me, there’s just nothing that makes it stand out as a buy or a read.

Coming from Antoine Fuqua, Wesley Snipes and Peter Milligan I expected more.  And maybe the names created an unfair higher standard?  But to me the series screams as a three issue treatment for a future movie project.

Overall, pretty ho-hum.

Review – Hotwire: Deep Cut #1

Bookmark and Share

An interesting series that focuses on a future where the dead wander aimlessly and police are charged with dispatching them.  Hotwire: Deep Cut #1 stands out not for the story, but instead, the use of colors is impressive.  The entire issue glows in neon with the use of almost fluorescent colors.

Detective Exorcist Alice Hotwire is back! After the events of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead, the city’s only supernatural investigator is taking some much needed R&R. But when a Blue Light from her colored past appears in front of her door, it sparks a series of events that lead Hotwire and Mobey across the city attempting to stop the results of a secret government project from turning the city into another living nightmare. With backup from Coroner Love and Metro Police, can Hotwire and Mobey save the day one more time? Join groundbreaking creator/writer/illustrator Steve Pugh for a glimpse into Alice Hotwire’s past and peer through a gateway into her future.

Created by Steve Pugh and Warren Ellis, written and art by Pugh Hotwire is definitely an entertaining series.  I haven’t read the previous arc, but was quickly caught up and didn’t feel like I missed anything.  The characters are interesting and art and coloring definitely unique.  Overall, this is one of the other Radical Publishing comics for the week that I’d recommend checking out.

Review – Driver for the Dead #1

Bookmark and Share

Driver for the Dead #1 is fantastic.  I’m just going to outright say, this is a must buy for the week.  Written by John Heffernan and art by Leonard Manco the story has two parts.  The first part focuses on a voodoo priest and the second half a driver for a funeral home who does a bit more than just move dead bodies around.

Alabaster Graves is a driver for the dead. As a veteran of funeral homes, mortuaries, and coroners’ offices across the Deep South, Graves chauffeurs hundreds of bodies to their final resting places. But now, Alabaster must cover the distance from Shreveport to New Orleans to retrieve the remains of Mose Freeman, renown voodoo priest, with Freeman’s sultry granddaughter riding shotgun. What he doesn’t know is that he’s being pursued by a resurrectionist named Fallow – a necromancer who gets his power from stealing body parts… and for whom the corpse of Mose Freeman would be the ultimate prize.

The story, art, setting all comes together to set the perfect mood.  This is great synergy on the comic page.  The story takes place in a post-Katrina Louisiana.  A lot is played off of the state’s history of supernatural and ties to voodoo and hoodoo.

The first part focusing on Freeman just sets the tone and builds that supernatural tension, and in the end sets the standard that anything can happen.  The quick transition to the main focus on Alabaster gives us a picture of who our hero is quickly.

I’m not the biggest fan of horror as a genre, but this is a series I can get behind and can’t wait for the next issue to come.  It’s just so solid and entertaining.  If you haven’t picked up a comic from Radical Publishing, this is a great series to start with.

Review – Shrapnel: Hubris #2

Bookmark and Share

There’s a lot going on in the second issue of Shrapnel: Hubris #2 and I’m torn on what I think.  The issue is published by Radical Publishing, created by Mark Long and Nick Sagan, written by Sagan and Clinnette Minnis with art by Concept Art House and the cover by Stephan Martiniere.  The second issue picks up with the first and takes us through the build up to Captain Narayan’s assault on the Solar Alliance.

Consumed with advancing their War of Unity on multiple fronts, the Solar Alliance may be vulnerable to an audacious, high-risk assault on one of their most valued possessions.  So rests the hopes of oppressed Helots across the System as a plot against the oldest extraplanetary colony moves forward.  Once loyal marines now turned freedom fighters, Captain Narayan, Colonel Rossi and their troops have a golden chance to slow down the enemy war machine…but at what cost?

I almost thinks there’s too much going on in this issue with a lot of cutting and back and forth.  Like another Radical title I reviewed the blacks in the art made it very difficult to figure out exactly what was going on and at times figure out who is who.  Overall, the story is entertaining.  The world is pretty cool with a hint of Total Recall.  When I could make out the art, it’s beautiful and really nice to look at.  There’s just points where there’s a lot of black and other dark colors too, making it hard to make at what’s what.

Like the first issue, I feel like I was missing something.  It was just hard to literally see what was going on at times.  Also like the first issue the story doesn’t focus on the action of the attacks but instead the lead up and chess playing that occurs before.  An interesting take and one I really appreciate.

Review – Time Bomb #1

Bookmark and Share

Time Bomb, is not a “deep comic” but boy is it entertaining.  The first issue comes off as a fantastic cheesy blockbuster movie, one that’s highly entertaining and you can’t take too seriously.  This is the type of comic you’d love to spend a Sunday afternoon at the theater watching with popcorn dripping with butter.  Published by Radical Publishing the series is from Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray with art from Paul Gulacy and color by Rain Beredo.

From Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray (Jonah Hex), with interior illustrations from multi-award winning industry veteran Paul Gulacy!

When a hidden city is discovered beneath the streets of Berlin, Hitler’s ultimate doomsday weapon – an Omega bomb designed to wipe out the human race – is accidentally activated. Now, crews of specialists with state-of-the-art weapons and equipment must travel back in time to stop the bomb from going off. However, they soon discover that, rather than going back in time as intended, they’ve been sent back into the heart of Hitler’s Germany.

The series is full of the things you’d expect from a blockbuster.  The troubled heroes, the big mystery, and the crazy action to save the day.  This is Armageddon with time travel (and no Aerosmith soundtrack).  The build up is an interesting mystery and I have to say fairly unique and fun.  You know the action the heroes take will somehow wrap around to the mysteries of the beginning of the comic.

The characters are pretty cookie cutter and dialogue is nothing dramatic, but the series as a whole is over the top popcorn fun.  The comic is a Michael Bay film in comic form, in a good way.  It’s mindless fun, and perfect for to kick back and read in a summer afternoon.

Official Press Release

SAM RAIMI TO DIRECT RADICAL’S EARP

July 21st, 2010, Los Angeles, CA Radical Publishing is proud to announce that director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Evil Dead) has signed on to produce and direct the film adaptation of EARP: SAINTS FOR SINNERS, based on Radical Publishing’s miniseries created by Matt Cirulnick and David Manpearl and written by Matt Cirulnick and M. Zachary Sherman. EARP: SAINTS FOR SINNERS will be produced by Mandeville Films partners David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman for DreamWorks with Matt Cirulnick attached to write the screenplay. Radical’s President and Publisher, Barry Levine, and Raimi’s partner at Star Road Entertainment, Josh Donen, will also produce with Radical Studios’ Executive Vice President Jesse Berger, Cirulnick and Manpearl signed on as Executive Producers.

In a world where the American economy has all but collapsed to the levels of the Great Depression, infamous bandits roam the country and the law is as corrupt as the criminals its sworn to stop. Yet one lawman remains a steadfast moral compass for the people: WYATT EARP. Earp has collared more most-wanted men than anyone in history – but after a violent assignment claims the life of his brother, Wyatt sets out to forge a simple life in the only boomtown left: Las Vegas. With gorgeous women and free-flowing money on endless tap, Sin City attracts more people than a modern gold rush. Though Earp no longer wears a U.S. Marshall’s badge, his past is about to catch up to him. With nearly everything to lose, Earp will have to beat the odds stacked against him in order to bring old-fashioned justice to Sin City.

“This is amazing news going into San Diego Comic-Con,” states Levine. “Both Cirulnick and Manpearl have created an exciting setting of Las Vegas in the near future to reinvent the Wyatt Earp legend that will excite fans around the world.”

EARP: SAINTS FOR SINNERS #0 is currently available to purchase for the premiere price of $1.00. A deluxe-sized issue #1 will go on sale in late 2010. Keep checking www.radicalpublishing.com for updates.
