Review – Time Bomb #2

Time Bomb #2 coverIt’s the second issue of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray‘s popcorn end of the world action comic.  Time Bomb #2 picks up right where the first issue ended with the team having to liberate a concentration camp and then figure out the location of the Nazi doomsday weapon.  But will they stop the weapon in time?

After the Omega Bomb of Nazi Germany is accidentally launched, giving the human race 72 hours to live, four specialists are sent back in time to prevent the disaster. Unfortunately, instead of getting sent back two days, our heroes find themselves 67 years in the past, landing right in the middle of a German POW camp.

As the four, time-displaced heroes hurry to ground zero, they take careful steps not to alter the past. However, their presence has alerted a sinister and evil enemy to their mission, the creator of the Omega Bomb himself – Axel Von Metzger, The Butcher!

This is a popcorn B movie in comic form complete with Nazi bad guys.  There’s lots of debate about altering the future and their need to be careful and the tense moments you’d expect.

This is the type of comic you’d like to see on the small screen being hosted by a cheesy local host as you kick back and enjoy it on a Sunday afternoon.  Definitely fun and entertaining.

Review – Mata Hari

Radical Premiere Mata Hari CoverI didn’t know what to expect with this pseudo biography of the famous Mata Hari.  I know the name, but I’d imagine like many, know nothing of the famous femme fatale.

From Rich Wilkes (xXx), a look into the most notorious woman of her time, Mata Hari, debuting in a special $1.00 Radical Premiere, previewing the upcoming graphic novel.

What is the secret story behind femme fatale Mata Hari, the most famous female spy in the world? Through the account of a humble eighteen-year-old girl, discover the secrets of the famous heroine, her covert missions and the love that made her lose everything.

The short premiere of the graphic novel coming out next year we learn about this character who turns out was a spy and executed for espionage.  I called the comic a pseudo biography as much of the details of her espionage is sealed and some of the events are fabricated for the stories sake.  Rich Wilkes admits that in the comic, and I applaud him for it.

The comic is $1 and it definitely has me interested.  The story is fascinating, even more so because it’s (semi)true.  The writing is pretty good and the art also pleasing on the eyes.  Overall, for $1 how can you go wrong.

Review – The Last Days of American Crime #3

Last Days #3 Cover A MaleevWritten by Rick Remender with art by Greg Tocchini, The Last Days of American Crime #3 is the finale to Radical Publishing’s amazing “end as we know it” noir(ish) crime heist comic book.  The third issue absolutely pays off and taken as a whole, these three issues together are a fantastic read.

The heist of the century is finally here. With his team together, his scheme in place and the score set, Graham, at long last, is ready to pull off the last and greatest crime in the history of the United States. But even if the plan goes off without a single hitch, what can he do when the American Government decides to activate their anti-crime broadcast during the job. Will the last day of American crime end with Graham and his team as millionaires, or will they spend the rest of eternity wondering where they went wrong?

The stunning conclusion to the critically acclaimed miniseries written by Rick Remender (Punisher, Fear Agent) with art by Greg Tocchini.

It’s the final hours before a signal makes it impossible to break the law.  There’s a count down element plus some twists that come into play at the end.  Everything you’d expect from a good noir story is there.  A femme fatale, hard nosed criminal, twists and turns and crazy heist.

This one issue is really good, but all three together are fantastic and a great read.  Definitely pick them all up when they come at as a trade if you haven’t yet, but definitely finish off the series when this issue is released this week.

Disney acquires Radical’s Oblivion

Official Press Release

DISNEY ACQUIRES RADICAL’S OBLIVION

August 5th, 2010, Los Angeles, CA Radical Publishing is proud to announce that Disney has acquired the film adaptation of OBLIVION, based on Radical Publishing’s illustrated novel created by Tron: Legacy director, Joseph Kosinski, written by Rex Mundi creator, Arvid Nelson, and with illustrations by Andrée Wallin. OBLIVION will be directed by Joseph Kosinki and will be produced by Radical’s President and Publisher, Barry Levine, and Kosinski. Radical Studios’ Executive Vice President Jesse Berger is signed on as Executive Producer. Kosinki is repped by Verve and Anonymous Content while Radical is repped by CAA and David Schiff.

In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Joe Kosinski on OBLIVION,” said Barry Levine, president of Radical Pictures.  “Joe is one of the most creative forces in filmmaking today.  From the moment he teamed with Radical to produce the book and film, he had such a clear vision of the OBLIVION landscape and universe.  Add to that Joe’s successful partnership with Disney on Tron: Legacy, and you have all the ingredients for a phenomenal action/adventure film.”

OBLIVION, the 128-page illustrated novel, will be released in Summer 2011 and will feature prose, combined with over 40 fully painted landscape renderings. OBLIVION will be distributed worldwide through Random House.
