More information should be coming soon, but for now, here’s a look at the cover.

President Obama Chats Avengers on The View

President Obama was on the View where they grilled him on some pop-culture trivia, including challenging him to name some members of the Avengers.  The President in Geek, who is an admitted comic book fan, had no problem answering the question.

I saw the Avengers, so this is easy, you’ve got the Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man… – President Obama

2012 Election Merchandise Poll and Infographic Shows Most Interesting, Engaging Candidates

Zazzle Study of 25 Million Monthly E-Commerce Consumers Identifies Voter Behavior and Highlights Recent Changes in Public Sentiment Towards Presidential Candidates

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., March 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Zazzle today announced its findings from the 2012 Election Merchandise Poll. With more than 25 million monthly site visitors, the world’s largest e-commerce customization company analyzed consumer search, product design, and purchasing behaviors to identify voter engagement and sentiment for the remaining GOP presidential candidates and incumbent Democrat, Barack Obama.

Based on two months of consumer data, all findings from the recent study are available in a new political infographic that charts candidate popularity over time, compares positive- vs. negative-themed sales and designs, and highlights the top political products.

“Massive amount of voters, including millions of users on Zazzle, physically express their ideas and opinions through online merchandise customization – this is a similar test of sentiment when compared to the use of Twitter and Facebook as platforms to express opinions through text,” said Josh Neuman, Zazzle’s head of political merchandising and analyses.

Voter Sentiment through E-Commerce and Product Design

To date, more than 3 million custom political products and 1 million political t-shirts have been developed and sold on Zazzle’s customization platform. These include candidate t-shirts for Obama, Ron Paul, Romney, Gingrich and Santorum.

Findings:

  • The upward swing in pro-Obama merchandise sales demonstrates a potential shift in consumer sentiment – of all Obama-related sales, 60 percent were anti-Obama designs in January, compared to 51 percent in March.
  • Since January, Obama has been included in more than 30 percent of all presidential-themed merchandise created.
  • The quantity of Ron Paul sales and searches more than doubles that of Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, combined.
  • Although Ron Paul’s overall popularity on Zazzle has dropped by nearly 40 percent since January, he continues to lead in sales, product design and searches among GOP candidates.
  • Romney has the greatest differential between the number of items created and the number of items sold.
  • Although Gingrich saw a major popularity spike in late January, current interest has fallen below that of Romney and Santorum.
  • Top products show that political satire is very popular among consumers of political merchandise.

More insights into politics and e-Commerce trends can be found in the official infographic and on the Zazzle blog.

President Clinton Comic Book Retailer?

Speaking before the National Retail Federation‘s (NRF) 101st Annual Convention & Expo, former President Bill Clinton recalled his first job, being a comic book retailer.  From Convenience Store News:

The former U.S. chief then recalled his first retail job, working for a grocery store at age 13. He subsequently talked the grocery store owner into allowing him to set up his own retail business within the store that sold used comic books. “I had two chests filled with perfectly preserved comic books,” he recalled. “During the months I worked at the grocery store, I sold every one. I made about $100 and I felt like a millionaire. I now know I was a fool. If I had saved those comic books, they’d be worth $200,000 to $300,000 today. But it was a good experience.”

So, turns out President Obama wasn’t the first Commander in Geek.

Supervillain or Newt?

Supervillains have some batshit insane plans and say the darnedest things.  Former Speaker of the House and current Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has some batshit insane plans and says some of the darnedest things.  Can you tell them apart?  The website Supervillain or Newt gives you an idea or quote and you get to figure out if it’s a supervillain who said it or Newt Gingrich.  I only got 5 out of 10 right.

President-in-Geek Obama Mentions His Love of Comics and Spider-Man on Video

In preparation for the return to school, Scholastic had student journalists interview President Obama about topics like his reading habits growing up and  the 9-11 attacks.

Below is the video excerpt where he admits (though it comes of shamefully) he read comic books growing up, and his specifically Spider-Man.

[vodpod id=Video.15348196&w=425&h=350&fv=videoId%3D1124354269001%26amp%3BplayerId%3D1543302482%26amp%3BviewerSecureGatewayURL%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fconsole.brightcove.com%2Fservices%2Famfgateway%26amp%3BservicesURL%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fservices.brightcove.com%2Fservices%26amp%3BcdnURL%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fadmin.brightcove.com%26amp%3Bdomain%3Dembed%26amp%3BautoStart%3Dfalse%26amp%3B]

I think I was getting into, like The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and stuff like that. And I confess that I did read comic books as well, like Spiderman was one of my favorites. And then I read what I was assigned at school.
….But by the time maybe I was Malia’s age, I was starting to read more serious books like, To Kill a Mockingbird, or some of the things that I see her reading now that made you think a little bit more. They weren’t just kind of adventure stories, but they were also stories that taught me about social problems and taught me about how people interact with each other, and how some people are kind and some people are cruel. And history sweeps them along, and people have a lot of challenges in their lives.
