Hayden Currie has handed out hundreds of free comic books starring New Zealand‘s Prime Minister John Key in the lead up to this week’s election. According to Currie the focus is on Key’s National government:
Sure, things are bad. But at least our Prime Minister drinks beer like a real bloke should. We could talk child poverty and rising living costs all day, but you can’t deny the fact that Key has some great slogans.

A bit ago we brought you the story that Shepard Fairey had modified his iconic “Hope” image for the Occupy Wall Street cause. After a bit of drama the artist has modified the image at the request of the movement. The original poster “hoped” the President was with the movement. Well that didn’t sit too well with some and they sent a letter to Fairey according to the Village Voice:
I myself and several other organizers cannot in any way be connected to this design. The 99% movement is wholly non-partisan and we have been repeatedly attacked as being a front for Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. Our movement is about uniting people, from all different walks of life and all different political viewpoints, against the global financial elite who have bought control of our government through campaign finance, lobbying and the revolving door.
I don’t read Fairey’s original poster as saying such, it implores the President to be a part of the movement, not the movement endorsing the President, there’s a difference. Would the movement be against the President taking a stand and implementing the changes espoused by them? In fact, I think the as for the change voices exclusion by the movement. Through all of the protests this week when it comes to Occupy Wall Street, one took a comic spin as a “bat-sginal” was used projecting slogans on a Verizon building during the Brooklyn Bridge #N17 march. First reported on Boing Boing, the slogans included:

Screwing with Verizon brings back my memories of working against FISA and doing so while renting space from Verizon. There was something entertaining about fighting a company while being inside their building. Mark Read is the person behind the signal and in an interview with Boing Boing he goes over the how and why he did this.
Prolific comic book writer Chris Roberson talks about the Congressional super committee that’s been formed and compares it to various super hero teams of past and present. The super committee is made of twelve members from both political parties and bother the House and Senate and are tasked with cutting $1.2 trillion from the federal budget. The comparison is hilarious for a political geek such as myself and knowing a few of the committee members, they’d enjoy it as well.
When Roberson hear the word “super” he thinks of the heroes he grew up with reading and doesn’t think the committee is living up to it’s name:
It’s not faster than a speeding amendment or more powerful than a filibuster, and it doesn’t soar over gridlock. Instead, the super committee seems as helpless as Superman when he’s been rendered powerless by a blast of red sun radiation, or worse yet, kryptonite.

The Village Voice feels that since DC has rebooted their comic book line, what a similar action might look like in Washington, DC. Ward Sutton has put together a great collection of eight suggestions on what could be the next round of reboots. Below is one example.

It’s a new week and up on tap is politics in comics (shocker!). A group of individuals have gotten together to form Occupy Comics.
Through Kickstarter they’re funding their first issue and the proceeds will benefit the Occupy Movement. You can learn more here.
