Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

It’s a new week of comics which means a whole bunch of new releases, and it’s a big list this week. Coming off of Free Comic Book Day, numerous series are picking up where their free books left off, and this year’s “events” begin after their zero issues. The team goes through the list of releases, and figures out which are the most interesting, so you aren’t overwhelmed when you head to shops to pick up the new releases. So without further ado, here’s ten books worth checking out (though the list could be much, much longer).

Top Pick: The Wake #8 (Vertigo) – They say don’t go in the ocean. There are monsters out there. Terrible secrets in the deep. But Leeward isn’t scared of any of that, because the thing she’s running from on land is much, much worse… Writer Scott Snyder and artist Sean Murphy’s series second volume has catapulted us into the future, but hasn’t dialed back the mystery. Each issue is a must read, and this mini-series should be a part of everyone’s pull box.

Batman Eternal #5 (DC Comics) – I rolled my eyes when I heard there’d be a new Batman comic, let alone a weekly series, and man was I wrong. This series focuses on everyone that circles around Batman’s universe, in a fantastic series that fleshes out the city of Gotham, and those that dwell there.

Clockwork Game (Fiery Studios) – Clockwork Game retells the true story of the world’s first chess-playing automaton, blending reality and fiction into a singular graphic novel.

Epic #1 (ComixTribe) – Did you pick up the free zero issue at Free Comic Book Day? If you didn’t make sure you do so Wednesday when you also grab the first issue of the new indie superhero series.

Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (Marvel) – Marvel has rebooted their Ultimate universe with mixed results. Here’s hoping Miles’ solo adventures are as fun as the previous volume.

Nailbiter #1 (Image Comics) – A new series from Image that takes us to a small town whose biggest export is serial killers.

The New 52: Future’s End #1 (DC Comics) – The zero issue from Free Comic Book Day didn’t exactly blow me away, as it was a bit too Age of Ultron, but this is DC’s next big event begins here, so folks will be talking about it, good or bad. And is the last event even over with!?

Original Sin #1 (Marvel) – Speaking of event, Marvel’s gets a first issue after a zero issue. Someone has killed the Watcher in a pseudo Wikileaks like story.

She-Hulk #4 (Marvel) – One of Marvel’s best All-New Marvel NOW! series mixes action and humor.

The Woods #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new horror series from BOOM! and writer James Tynion IV transports a school to an alien world and to survive, they must enter the mysterious woods.

Nailbiter explores the world of serial killers

Image Comics has revealed early artwork from Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson‘s new series, Nailbiter, to haunt the comics industry’s dreams until its release on May 7th. The forthcoming horror suspense series was announced at Image Expo in January and generated early comparisons to Twin Peaks and The Silence of the Lambs.

Buckaroo, Oregon has given birth to sixteen of the vilest serial killers in the world. An obsessed FBI profiler investigating the town has suddenly gone missing, and now an NSA agent must work with the notorious serial killer Edward “Nailbiter” Warren to find his friend and solve the mystery of where serial killers come from.

Image Expo 2014: Williamson’s New Series a Real Nailbiter

Did you know that more serial killers have been born in Buckaroo, Oregon than any other city in the world?

Joshua Williamson teams up with artist Mike Henderson to bring readers a serial killer mystery they won’t be able to tear their eyes away from this May from Image Comics.

Since 1969, Buckaroo, Oregon has been the birthplace for sixteen serial killers and FBI criminal profiler Charles Kohl aims to uncover why. But just as Kohl begins to close in on understanding the truth behind why this small town seems to breed some of the vilest human beings America has ever seen, he goes missing. Enter trusted friend and NSA agent Nicholas Finch who must race against the clock to find his friend and piece together the rest of the mystery…before anyone else gets hurt.

Williamson delved deep into research about serial killers, both real and fictional, pulling inspiration from the Zodiac killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, and the characters in films like Se7en, Silence of the Lambs, and Psycho.

We talk a lot of the families of the victims, but what about the families of the killers. That’s what Nailbiter is about. The people who have to deal with finding out someone they love is a murderer. Like how Twin Peaks shines a spotlight on a small town after Laura Palmer’s death, Nailbiter does the same but shows a small town after finding out a bunch of horrible killers are from there.

Henderson added:

Josh and I had been working on Masks & Mobsters together for over a year when he pitched the idea of Nailbiter to me and it was an easy sell. We both wanted to create something new and expansive and I was drawn in by the eccentric cast of characters, which took on a new life when I started designing them.

The process for bringing Nailbiter to life is an ongoing collaborative correspondence. “With each issue Mike and I text and chat about the plot, the pacing, the horror beats, and really try to get the most out of every page,” Williamson revealed. “But at the same time, once we get past the layout stage, Mike cuts loose, and brings the energy and excitement the book needs.”
