Aspen Welcomes Artist Mike DeBalfo to the Soulfire Universe

Aspen Comics announced Saturday at the Official Aspen Comics Panel that popular artist Mike DeBalfo will be joining the Aspen Comics team and taking on founder Michael Turner’s flagship creation the magical action-adventure series Soulfire this summer beginning with Soulfire Volume Four #1, which will be released this August. This will mark DeBalfo’s first-ever foray into an ongoing series as he will provide both the covers and interiors. Aspen is eager to bring on DeBalfo’s exciting art to the world of Soulfire, Editor-in-Chief Vince Hernandez states:

“Mike’s art and more importantly his motivation to continually grow as an artist solidified our feeling that he’d be a perfect fit for Soulfire. After many discussions with Mike, we knew he was ready for the challenge of taking on one our principle titles and expanding upon it with his own touch. We’re excited to see what he’ll deliver, as well as seeing how his artwork will continue to progress as he gets further along. I know he’s more than ready to show everyone what he can do on both ends.”

DeBalfo’s arrival on the title with Soulfire: Volume Four comes at a crucial moment in the Soulfire Universe on the heels of the weekly summer crossover “The Search for the Light”, which will dramatically alter the future of the title and subsequent storylines. In accordance with the surprising events following “The Search for the Light” story arc.

DeBalfo and Aspen have for the first time in Aspen’s history redesigned a principle Aspen character, the Soulfire heroine Grace, for the upcoming Soulfire: Volume 4. Grace’s costume design as well as other dramatic changes will mark a new era within the Soulfire world and for longtime fans of the series.

In addition to his work on Soulfire, DeBalfo will teaming up with Aspen’s superstar colorist Peter Steigerwald to provide variant covers for the publishers other popular titles throughout the month of August including Executive Assistant: Assassins, Fathom, Homecoming as well as Soulfire. Artist DeBalfo discusses his upcoming work on Soulfire and other Aspen titles:

“Many fans are finally going to get what they’ve been craving from me; a series of twenty page issues of awesome, cover to cover, over the next several months! This collaboration has been a long time in the making but I was no less humbled when asked to be the guy to design the new Grace. I couldn’t be more excited about working with the Aspen guys to tackle what sounds like the most exciting Soulfire story arc yet. This is Grace like you’ve NEVER imagined possible. It’s going to be a wild ride so stick around!”

Aspen Comics’ “Search for the Light” summer crossover event will span five individual one shots starting in June with the release of Soulfire: Hope, followed by Soulfire: Despair, Soulfire: Faith, Soulfire: Power and ending with Soulfire: Grace. Each one shot will feature a different “Master” from the Soulfire Universe in their search for the missing “Bearer of the Light”, Malikai. New readers can also jump into the Soulfire series with the May release of the special Soulfire: Primer issue which recaps the first three volumes of the series, just in time for this summer’s event.

Zenescope Entertainment to Unveil Miniseries Inspired by ‘The Jungle Book’

Official Press Release

Zenescope Entertainment to Unveil Miniseries Inspired by ‘The Jungle Book’

Dec. 28, 2011 — Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans to release a brand-new miniseries under its Grimm Fairy Tales label entitled “The Jungle Book.” Just as Zenescope has cleverly and effectively reimagined stories inspired by literary classics such as Wonderland, Sinbad, and Neverland, this new miniseries will use Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories as a springboard to tell tales exploring the adventure, the wonder, and the horror of the jungle and the beasts that inhabit it.

The new five-issue miniseries will follow Mowglii, a young girl raised by wolves who finds herself in the middle of what the animals call The Great Animal Battle. Mowglii must learn her place in the jungle and fight for survival against many exotic beasts. But she is not the only human in this jungle island. Three other children have been raised by different animal tribes: Bomani grows up in the tiger tribe that is led by the conniving Shere Kahn, Akili learned the ways of the jungle from the mischievous Tavi mongoose tribe, and Dewan comes of age within the unpredictable Monkeys of Bandar Log, which is led by the insane King Bandar Louis. Mowglii and the rest of the human cubs play key roles in the ongoing Great Animal Battle of Kipling Isle as they approach adulthood.

“I’ve always thought an animal civil war was a fun idea full of potential,” says writer Mark L. Miller, an editor for Ain’t It Cool News who also authored “Nanny & Hank” and, more recently, “Luna: Order of the Werewolf” for Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. “Once I started thinking of it in the context of Kipling’s famous stories, it all fell into place. I treated the different animal species as warring armies, each with their own leaders and soldiers, each with a purpose they are fighting for. There will be huge scenes of animal battles like you’ve never seen before. There will also be scenes of adventure, horror and discovery as the human characters (Mowglii, Bomani, Akili and Dewan) give you a chance to learn about the sometimes perilous, sometimes beautiful, sometimes terrifying ways of the jungle through fresh eyes. Plus, I get to play around with all of these characters I grew up reading about and loving as a child. It’s a dream come true.”

“Grimm Fairy Tales Presents The Jungle Book #1” will hit shelves in March of 2012, and feature four connecting covers by artist Ale Garza and a retailer incentive cover by Mike DeBalfo. It currently is available for order through Diamond Previews for $2.99 and in full color. For more information, visit Zenescope’s website at www.zenescope.com or its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Zenescope.

Zenescope News! Brand new ongoing series: Grimm Fairy Tales Myths and Legends

Official Press Release

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans for a brand new series spinning out of the events of their landmark issue GRIMM FAIRY TALES #50.  The new series, GRIMM FAIRY TALES MYTHS & LEGENDS is the first Grimm spin-off series to receive ongoing status.   The new series is created by Grimm writers Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco with the first story arc “Red Riding Hood” to be written by Zenescope’s Raven Gregory (Wonderland trilogy, The Waking, The Gift), illustrated by David Miller and including cover art by the top artists in the industry like J. Scott Campbell, Eric Basaldua and Mike DeBalfo “I can’t tell you how excited I am to be apart of this.  Not only do we get to go back and revisit some of the series most popular characters like Red Riding Hood but we get to explain the reasons behind why these characters were chosen by Sela in the first place,” says writer Raven Gregory.

“This series will allow us to now expand on past fairy tales we’ve already written in the original Grimm series and now turn them into four and five issue story arcs .   It’s going to be dark and twisted on a whole new level.”  said Zenescope Editor-in-Chief Ralph Tedesco.

For those unfamiliar with the comic, Zenescope’s Grimm Fairy Tales reinvents the mythology of the old classic tales with a modern updated horror twist.

Zenescope Entertainment was founded in 2005 by Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco and has since become one of the top independent comic book and graphic novel publishers in the world.
