A Super-Model Super-Hero!

A SUPER-MODEL SUPER-HERO!

ASPEN COMICS PARTNERS WITH SUPER-MODEL RACHEL CLARK AND HIGH-FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER MICHAEL SCHWARTZ TO CREATE STUNNING PHOTO COVERS FOR IDOLIZED PLUS, ASPEN ANNOUNCES IDOLIZED COVERS FROM ART ADAMS, JOE BENITEZ, KERON GRANT AND MORE!

Aspen Comics is proud to announce that their upcoming new series IDOLIZED will feature a series of covers shot by renowned photographer Michael Schwartz, and featuring supermodel Rachel Clark.  For the exclusive IDOLIZED photo shoot, a special costume was constructed, allowing Ms. Clark to appear as IDOLIZED’s dark and disturbed super-powered protagonist, Joule.

“We’re thrilled to be working with such amazing talent for IDOLIZED”, said Aspen President Frank Mastromauro.  “Rachel and Michael are major names in the fashion industry, and they’ve brought something truly special, unique, and absolutely gorgeous to our covers.” Rachel has been the face of Louis Vuitton, D&G and Victoria’s Secret’s ‘PINK’ line.  She’s appeared in magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Vogue, and in ad campaigns for Levis, Louis Vuitton, D&G, Barney’s and Neiman Marcus.  She’s walked the runway for the likes of Christian Dior, John Galliano, Hermes, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Donna Karan, Salvatore Ferragamo and numerous others. Perhaps most importantly, she’s also a total comic book junkie and a major World of Warcraft player.

Michael Schwartz shoots for an amazing list of some of the biggest names in the fashion and entertainment industries, including Victoria’s Secret, Hugo Boss, J Crew, Universal Music, Madewell, Polydor Records and editorial clients such as V Magazine, V Man, Harper’s Bazaar, Dazed & Confused, Dansk, Exit, Metal and now Aspen Comics.

“It was really exciting to bring a drawing to life,” Schwartz raved, “especially with such an amazing model to help make this happen.” The shoot took place on Sunday, January 15th in New York, and nearly 1500 images were taken over the course of the day. In fact, there so many spectacular photos taken, that the Aspen editorial team had a nearly impossible time narrowing them down to just 1 cover image for each issue. “At some point, we may have to collect all of our other favorites and publish them in a book of just the photos,” said Aspen Editor-in-Chief Vince Hernandez.  “They’re just really, really cool, stunning images and we want to be able to get as many of them out there, in print, as possible.” Of course, each issue of IDOLIZED will be having traditional comic books covers as well, and they’ve got an incredible line-up of some of the biggest names in comics providing those covers, including ART ADAMS, JOE BENITEZ and a painted cover from KERON GRANT.

IDOLIZED is Aspen’s first-ever superhero series, so they’re pulling out all the stops. It tells the story of girl with super-powers and a tortured past, who seeks revenge, and ultimately finds redemption, over the course of competing in a televised super-hero competition show.  Essentially, it’s “True Grit” meets “American Idol” with capes.  The series is written by Michael’s brother David B. Schwartz (acclaimed writer of Image Comics’ “MELTDOWN”, “Aspen Showcase: Ember” and “Fathom: Blue Descent”), with explosive art by Micah Gunnell (“Shrugged”, “Executive Assistant: Orchid”, “Dellec”) and colors by David Curiel (“Executive Assistant: Orchid”).  The first issue will debut in June 2012.

Aspen Comics Offers You The Chance To Be A Superhero In Their Upcoming Series “Idolized”!

Official Press Release

ASPEN COMICS OFFERS YOU THE CHANCE TO BE A SUPERHERO IN THEIR UPCOMING SERIES “IDOLIZED”!

PLUS, WIN ORIGINAL ART AND SIGNED COPIES OF THE SERIES!

First, Aspen Comics offered you the chance to vote on what the characters in their upcoming series “IDOLIZED” would look like.  Now, they’re offering you the chance to actually appear as a character in the series.

“IDOLIZED” is Aspen’s first-ever superhero series.  It tells the story of girl with super-powers and a dark past, who seeks revenge, and ultimately finds redemption, over the course of competing in a televised super-hero competition show.  Essentially, it’s “True Grit” meets “American Idol”…with capes.

Now, you can be drawn into an issue of IDOLIZED as one of the superheroes auditioning to win the coveted title of “Superhero Idol”.

Simply tell Aspen what super-powers you would have if you were a superhero, and why.  Your entry can be purely text, or can include drawings and/or photos of yourself as the super-hero you’d dream of being.  You can enter any time between now and February 13, simply by posting your submission on Facebook.com/IdolizedComic and/or tweeting it with the hash-tag “#Idolized” in your tweet. There’s no limit on the number of entries you can make.

Aspen will choose their five favorite entries, and the fans will then have the chance to vote among those five finalists to choose the ultimate winner.  That winner will be drawn into issue #2 of IDOLIZED, and their name and likeness will appear in multiple panels as they join in a large-scale superhero battle.

And, as if actually being a superhero in a comic book wasn’t enough, the winner will also receive a page of original art that they appear in, and all five of the finalists will receive copies of each issue of IDOLIZED, signed by series writer David B. Schwartz and series artist Micah Gunnell.

“Given the subject matter of IDOLIZED, having a contest like this, and allowing our fans to really interact with and be a part of the series, seemed like a no-brainer,” said Aspen President Frank Mastromauro.  “And, after all, who wouldn’t want to be a super-hero?”

“IDOLIZED is shaping up to be an absolutely mind-blowingly amazing book,” added Aspen Editor-in-Chief Vince Hernandez. “The story is a blast, the artwork that Micah’s turning in is some of the best art I’ve ever seen, and I think that whoever ends up winning is going to be incredibly proud to have been a part of this series.”

The full rules for the contest are available at http://aspencomics.com/community/default.asp in the IDOLIZED section.

Aspen Comics’ Idolized

Official Press Release

ASPEN COMICS COMPLETES THE CHARACTER DESIGN VOTING FOR “IDOLIZED”, AND REVEALS THE FINAL WINNING DESIGN!

For the first time ever, fans have had a hand in actually creating their comics, as readers got the chance to vote on the look of each of the characters in Aspen’s newest series, “IDOLIZED”, debuting in 2012.  Thousands of votes were cast, many of the races were incredibly close, and the winning designs have now all been revealed.

For each character, “IDOLIZED” artist Micah Gunnell gave Aspen three different ‘looks’ to choose from. But for this series, instead of Aspen selecting among the looks, Aspen decided to open it up to the fans, and let them decide.

In Week Five, the final week of voting, fans had the chance to vote on the designs for TROOPER.  Trooper is a former police officer recovering from a nearly-fatal shooting and seeking to prove himself as a true hero despite his lack of powers.  Fans certainly didn’t have any lack of certainty as to their favorite look for him, though, as the winning design prevailed in a landslide.

“We’re truly thrilled with the incredible amount of attention that this brought to IDOLIZED,” said Aspen President Frank Mastromauro.  “It’s a series that I believe without a doubt readers are absolutely going to love, and I’m so happy that we were able to give our fans a chance to really interact with the series and help have a hand in shaping it.”

And, according to Aspen’s Editor-in-Chief Vince Hernandez, “we have some even bigger IDOLIZED events happening in the next few weeks.  Stay tuned, and, if you haven’t already, make sure to “like” the IDOLIZED page at www.Facebook.com/IdolizedComic in order to hear the news first, before anywhere else.”

Aspen Comics’ Idolized Week 2 Results

Official Press Release

CHARACTER DESIGN VOTING FOR ASPEN COMICS SERIES “IDOLIZED” CONTINUES, WITH WEEK TWO RESULTS AND WEEK THREE CHARACTERS REVEALED!

For the first time ever, fans can have a hand in actually creating their comics, as readers get the chance to vote on the look of each of the characters in Aspen’s newest series, “IDOLIZED”, debuting in 2012. Now you, the fan, can have the unique opportunity of helping create Aspen’s next great series. If you’ve ever dreamed of creating comics, here’s your chance!

For each character, “IDOLIZED” artist Micah Gunnell gives Aspen three different ‘looks’ to choose from. But for this series, instead of Aspen selecting among the looks, they’ve decided to open it up to the fans, and let you decide.

Week Two featured one incredibly close race, and one complete blow-out.  In Week Two, fans had the chance to vote on the designs for two characters: MYTH, a massively powerful but utterly pacifistic super-heroine; and HOCUS, an annoying, wisecracking hero who can make objects appear out of thin air.   With HOCUS, the winning design prevailed in a landslide, but for MYTH a mere 10 vote differential ended up deciding the winner.

Week Three of the voting is now live with two entirely new characters to vote on:  RADIUM and WIRELESS!  Don’t wait – visit www.Facebook.com/IdolizedComic immediately, hit the “Like” button, and then cast your votes and help create the world of “IDOLIZED”!

Each Monday, Aspen will be posting a new set of character designs for readers to vote on.   The following Monday, a new set of characters will be posted, and the voting for the prior week’s characters will be locked.  So, make sure to vote early and often in order to ensure that the characters in “IDOLIZED” look exactly the way you want them to!   And, in order to help make completely sure that your favorites win, spread the word and get all of your friends and followers to vote for your top choice.

Aspen Comics Reveals Idolized Week One Results

Official Press Release

ASPEN COMICS INVITES YOU, THE FAN, TO HELP CREATE THEIR NEW SERIES “IDOLIZED” – WEEK ONE RESULTS AND WEEK TWO CHARACTERS REVEALED!

All of the visual designs Micah’s been cooking up look absolutely amazing, so Aspen fully expected that it would be a tough competition, and in Week One that certainly held true.  In Week One fans had the chance to vote on the designs for two characters, Regenerate and The Present, and, out of the hundreds and hundreds of votes cast, less than 30 votes separated the top design choices from their closest competitors.

Week Two of the voting is now live with two entirely new characters to vote on:  HOCUS and MYTH!  Don’t wait – visit www.Facebook.com/IdolizedComic immediately and cast your vote for your favorite design choices.

Aspen Comics Review – Dead Man’s Run #0

Aspen Comics is on a role.  I’ve really dug the last few things I’ve read of theirs, and had no idea what to expect going into reading Dead Man’s Run #0 which is out this week.  For about three-quarters of the comic I’m expecting a fairly normal prison story, waiting for what made it different.  There’s obviously something up with the main character, but other than that, I really had no idea what the twist was.  Then it hits you what the prison is.  It houses the denizens of hell.  Ok, so that was a twist I wasn’t expecting.

In a future where hell exists as an underground prison for the reanimated dead, a young man named Sam Tinker enlists a team of the damned to escape and save his innocent sister. It’s a prison break from hell. Literally.

This first issue hints and a heist comic.  Other parts hint at a gauntlet type run.  There’s other parts that hint that it’s about a prison break.  So, even after this zero issue, I still have no idea what to expect in the first issue, and that’s pretty cool.  The art is pretty damn solid (pun intended) and the story has a feel about it that’s just action packed.  It feels like something that could work in a comic or on the big screen.  There’s a reason the comic got such a positive reaction at New York Comic Con, it’s a really entertaining comic book.

There’s a lot set up here in this “first issue” and we have to wait until January to see how it all unfolds, but it looks like Aspen has another solid series on their hands.

I’m pretty new to the Aspen Comics world.  I remember when Fathom first launched and that the art stood out at that time. Michael Turner‘s style stood out from what else was on the shelves and was beautiful to look at.  Over a decade later Aspen Comics is going strong with numerous other series doing their best to imitate and pay homage to Turner’s unique style (Turner passed away in 2008).

Other than Lady Mechanika, I’ve never read an Aspen comic book before and the difficulty with this review was going into these five comic books without having read the previous comics.  I was worried they wouldn’t make sense and I’d walk away irritated that the comics weren’t inviting.  I admit there was more than what I understood, but overall the comics were penetrable for new readers and without any background, I quickly figured out what was going on.

But, how does each of them hold up?

Mindfield #6

Mindfield #6 CoverWritten by J.T. Krul, Alex Konat on pencils, inks by Jon Bolerjack and color done by John Starr, the series is about a C.I.A elite team of telepathic agents fighting to stop a terror group from setting off a nuclear bomb.  I found the story pretty interesting, but having missed the previous five issues, a lot, especially at the end didn’t have much impact to me.  Overall though, the story was very fast paced and kept me on my toes.

The concept is interesting but this issue really felt like an episode of 24, with the team scrambling to stop the bomb.  Replace the gun fight you’d see in that show instead with a battle within someone’s mind and they’re similar.  The art was pretty good, though there’s minor issues here and there, but some of the perspective and use of panels was solid, especially in the mindscape battle.

I was a bit lost not having read earlier issues, so I can’t recommend this for new readers, but for those who have read previous issues, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.  There’s enough here that I want to go back and read the previous five issues, but also might wait for the eventual trade paperback.  It’s a solid book and as the first entry of the bunch I’ve read, I knew right away the rest of the books would be worth my time.

Story: 7.75 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.75 Recommendation: Buy (new readers wait for the trade)

Fathom Blue Descent #3

Fathom was the property I knew out of the bunch.  Written by David Schwartz, art by Alex Sanchez and colors by Peter Steigerwald this mini-series revolves about Aspen Matthew’s parents.  The style here is pretty interesting with a unique look to the characters, and I sort of understood what was going on.  The issue was coming in new, I have no emotional attachment to the characters.  I don’t know enough to care.  What was impressive though, is even with over a decade of continuity behind it, it was still pretty inviting to read.  There was some things I liked, others I didn’t, but that’s judging from an outsider.  Ask a Fathom fan, I’m sure you’ll get a different response.

The good about the series was the tension build up and I had no idea what was going to happen.  There was also a Star Wars vibe going on where they needed to rescue the princess. That’s where the emotional connection was that I didn’t have though.  Without knowing these two characters and their history, it’s hard to really care what happens and get into the story.  There’s a lot that’s cool here and enough that I want to check out more, but I have to judge what’s put before me.

This is a tough one to rate, and without having read the previous two issues or the Fathom stories before, I can’t quite recommend it due to a lack of connection.  I felt like I was coming in on the middle of something, but for Fathom fans, I’m sure it’s a buy.

Story: 7 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.25 Recommendation: Pass

Executive Assistant: Lotus #2, Executive Assistant: Orchid #2 and Executive Assistant: Iris #2

I’m lumping all three of these comics together because I walked away with the same feeling about them and my grades are similar enough for each.  These three comics are part of a bigger event story called The Hitlist Agenda.  Basically the executive assistants are trained female assassins.  They have bodies with unrealistic proportions, wear clothing that’s not practical and can kill the President of Paraguay with a fork (bonus points if you get the reference).  Basically, all three series are a fanboys dreams.

What’s interesting is all three of these comics I began to read with the second issue, and with all three I was pretty good.  With minor tweaks they could be stand alone stories of female assassins kicking ass.  Each had a pretty distinct voice, style and look that made them stand out.  The issue I had with all three is clearly there’s a bigger story going on.  I picked up bits a pieces involving a war between India and Pakistan, somehow Israel is involved and shady folks who shape world events.  There’s a lot I like here.  Basically this reminds me of Archaia’s The Killer, but Americanized (ie bigger explosions, skimpier clothes and a bit more blunt).

These are three comics I want to read more of and with only an issue missed for each, that should be simple.  Iris though is in it’s second volume and reading the teaser text for that, I might need to go back and read that as well, but the point is I want to.

Out of all the comics I read, the art of these three was the most inconsistent.  Some of it’s beautiful, there’s great stuff, don’t get me wrong.  But that amazing work also makes me focus on issues with proportions and sizes of simple things like heads.  But, I can overlook that because I was so entertained, enough so you better believe I’m going back to see what I’ve missed.  This is a big budget action movie with sexy women in the lead, yes please!
