Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool: Blind Al

marvel-dice-masters-deadpool-blind-al-stay-in-the-deadhutThis November sees the newest release for WizKidsDice Masters, Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool. The set is focused on Deadpool’s world including the X-Men and Weapon X, but the set also includes some other familiar characters and the first appearance of the Inhumans team affiliation. I’ll be reviewing a card a day until the set’s release in a few weeks. But, beyond discussing the cards and how they fit into the Dice Masters game, I’ll also focus on the characters themselves and if the card reflects their comic history.

Next up is Blind Al: Stay in the Deadhut, the common version of the card.

Art: Walter McDaniel, Deadpool #20

Comic origin: Created by writer Joe Kelly and artist Ed McGuinness Blind Al debuted in Deadpool #1 in 1997. Al was living with Deadpool in the “Deadhut,” his house in San Francisco. Though her origin has never really been revealed its been hinted she was involved with British Intelligence. Deadpool was hired to kill her, but what happened is unknown. Later he would capture her and the two would have a weird relationship where she was a prisoner, friend, housekeeper, Greek Chorus, and mother-like figure.

The character was originally intended to be the first Black Widow and responsible for Deadpool getting cancer.

Live action version: Actress Leslie Uggams portrays Blind Al in the 2016 feature film Deadpool.

Card playability: This card is highly playable allowing a way for you to ping your opponent. The card is similar to the super rare Batgirl in that you can deal 1 damage to the die and then you deal 1 damage to your opponent. With a 3 MASK to purchase and total cost of 1 to field and 2 defense on the first level, this is a perfect card to do that sort of damage, constantly pinging your opponent.

Card vs. Comic: Kind of? Deadpool would hurt anyone who tried to help Blind Al escape but not her, so in that sense it works in a way and fits the two character’s odd relationship and history.

Final Thoughts: This card is fairly cheap to purchase and cheap to field and if played right, it’ll be beyond irritating to opponents. Sounds like my type of card!

Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool: Angel Dust

This November sees the newest release for WizKidsDice Masters, Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool.

Next up is Angel Dust: Chicagoan, the common version of the card.

Art: Shawn Martinbrough, Morlocks #1

Comic origin: Created by writer Geoff Johns and artist Shawn Martinbrough in 2002, Angel Dust was a mutant who ran away to join the Chicago faction of the Morlocks. She later returned home to her parents after helping the Morlocks and to her surprise her parents accepted her even though she was a mutant.

She lost her powers after the events of the 2005 “Decimation” storyline.

Angel Dust has the power to increase her adrenaline which gives her superhuman strength for a short time period. Her strength can vary depending on those levels and along with her strength her speed, agility, and stamina, are enhanced.

Live action version: Gina Carano played the character in 2016’s Deadpool.

Card playability: It’s interesting the character is a Hydra/Villain affiliation, though I don’t know enough about the characters so there may be an easy explanation for that. With a 5 FIST to purchase and combined fielding costs of 5 the die is kind of expensive to purchase and field, so her use will be in teams that stick around for a while. The card is pretty playable though. Combine it with other cards that force your opponents to block and you have a character that can grow really large easily. Also add in Overcrush and you’ve got a character that can deal some heavy damage too.

Card vs. Comic: Yes. Yes. Yes. The variation in attack and defense values perfectly reflect the character’s varying strength.

Final Thoughts: This card could be fun to play with, especially with a team that’s built around controlling who blocks and getting Overcrush out there. In fact… I might need to put one together.

Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool: Agent X

marvel-dice-masters-deadpool-agent-x-earth-2-counterpart

This November sees the newest release for WizKidsDice Masters, Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool.

Next up is Agent X: Earth-2 Counterpart, the rare version of the card.

Art: Alvin Lee, Agent X #1

Comic origin: Created by writer Gail Simone and artist Alvin Lee in 2002, Agent X was spun out of Deadpool which at the time wasn’t selling well and got his own mini-series that lasted for 15 issues.

The character’s real name is Nijo (also known as Alex Hayden) who’s an assassin and mercenary who blamed Deadpool for his brother’s death. There’s a story that I can’t even wrap up that involves the character wanting to be the best mercenary there was and may or not actually being Deadpool. Nijo/Alex was eventually trained by Taskmaster.

His abilities include a regenerative healing factor, foreign chemical resistance, disease immunity, extended longevity, telepathic immunity, superhuman strength, superhuman stamina, superhuman agility, and superhuman reflexes.

Live action version: None

Card playability: This is an interesting one. Being able to draw a die is useful and there’s a lot of new ways to redirect or gain life. This can be great to get crucial dice and/or a way to get rid of Sidekick dice too. Also being able to field a 5A for 1 die is pretty solid, so you also get a decent attacker out of it all.

Card vs. Comic: I’m not sure there’s a big connection between the card’s ability and the character. Being able to get needed supplies fits a bit, but that’s about it.

Final Thoughts: This card could be pretty useful in a game and I can see it being added to a few decks. It’s not a fame changing card, since there’s so many ways to draw dice now, but it’ll be interesting to see how it fits in to the rest of the set which may change my final thougts on the card’s use.

Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool: Agent Carter

marvel_dice_masters_deadpool_agent_carter_answered_the_call

This November sees the newest release for WizKidsDice Masters, Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool.

First up is Agent Carter: Answered the Call, the rare version of the card.

Art: Renaud Mu, Agent Carter: SHIELD 50th Anniversary (2015) #1 Variant

Comic origin: Margaret “Peggy: Carter first appeared in 1966 in Tales of Suspense #77 Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. As a teenager, the character joins the French Resistance and becomes a fighter who serves alongside Captain America. The two fall in love, but an exploding shell gives her amnesia.

As a teenager, the character joins the French Resistance and becomes a fighter who serves alongside Captain America. The two fall in love, but an exploding shell gives her amnesia.

In the comics, she also was originally the older sister of Sharon Carter, but that was later retconned and she became Sharon’s aunt.

In other comic versions, she marries Captain America in “House of M” when he isn’t frozen and the Earth-65 version she is the long-lived director of S.H.I.E.L.D. filling the roll of Nick Fury… including an eye patch!

Live action version: Hayley Atwell portrayed the character in various films including Captain America: The First Avenger and her own show Marvel’s Agent Carter.

Card playability: This card is absolutely playable! A cheap 2 FIST to purchase with only a 1 total cost to field, the card and die is cheap, cheap, cheap! While the die is active, it increases the cost to field Sidekick dice by 1. This is a huge ability as popular meta teams like Bard rely on fielding Sidekicks, so anything to increase the cost to field them will slow things down. Her cheap cost too means it’s a die that will be purchased early and fielded quickly. But, there’s a drawback too. That increased cost applies to you too, so hopefully your own team won’t rely on Sidekicks too much. This is a card that’ll be sought after and absolutely played.

Card vs. Comic: I think the card’s text and even the stats are a good reflection of the character. While she’s good with guns, I always saw her more defensive than offensive, but as part of the French Resistance, she harried the enemy so being an irritant and increasing the cost of Sidekicks is a good way to reflect that.

Final Thoughts: This card is a MUST GET. I think it’ll shake up the meta a lot and you’ll see entire teams built around it.

WizKids Shows Off Marvel Dice Masters Deadpool: Storm, Multiple Man, and Fantomex

WizKids‘ next Dice Masters set, Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool, is out in November and the game publisher has been showing off some of the cards and dice you’ll find within. On their Instagram account, the company has revealed three new common cards for Storm, Multiple Man, and Fantomex which are all a part of the X-Men team affiliation.

Storm: Thunderclap is a two cost BOLT character whose fielding cost for the first two levels is a cheap 0. But, it’s the card’s ability that could be the most interesting. When you field her, you can spin target ? energy in your opponent’s Reserve Pool to a BOLT face. It’s a combo card, it’s just a question of what combo to use it with and with more and more cards requiring you to keep energy in your Reserve Pool for defensive measures, this could be an interesting one.

Multiple Man: Duplicitous Nature is harder to figure out what it does. The card is a 3 MASK and has Underdog that involves doing something with a die from your Used pile when fielded. I could make guesses as to what that is, but it’d only be guesses.

Fantomex: E.V.A. is our final card and I believe that’s a X-Men symbol in its ability (though looks Hydra too) and it says character dice not of that type can’t block Fantomex unless the defending player moves one die from their Prep Area to their bag for each Fantomex character die they declare blockers for. At a cost of four SHIELD to purchase and a relatively cheap fielding cost for the stats, this is an interesting card, especially for drafts.

WizKids Shows Off Agent Carter, Lady Deadpool, Angela, Blind Al, and Bob from Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool

The latest Dice Masters set, Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool sees release in early November and WizKids is showing off some of the cards we can expect from the new set. On their Instagram account, the game publisher has shown off three new cards, Agent Carter: Answered the Call, Lady Deadpool: Earth-3010, and Angela: Raised by an Angel. That’s two rares and a super rare that’ll be in the set and all three characters are new to the game.

Yesterday the company showed off a common and uncommon in Blind Al: Stay in the Deadhut and Bob, Agent of Hydra: Hydra Doesn’t Offer Dental.

Blind Al is a 3 MASK to purchase that deals damage to an opponent when Blind Al is dealt damage. There’s a mechanic in there where you could ping Blind Al yourself and deal your opponent damage due to that. It looks like the card is cheap to field too, but makes this an interesting thing to explore.

Bob, Agent of Hydra is a 3 FIST that gives Deadpool Teams Fast when Bob is fielded. It’s an interesting card, but really is only useful if you’re running a Deadpool team, which I expect we’ll see a bunch of when the set is released.

Agent Carter is a cheap cost 2 to purchase and is a cheap die to field with good attack and defense stats and the ability to increase the cost to field Sidekick as characters while she’s active. Depending on the purchasing cost, this could be a good card to cripple decks that rely on Sidekick characters. I can see this character becoming a regular in games.

Lady Deadpool is a 5 SHIELD to purchase and we can only see the first two fielding costs. The wording of the card is a little funky, but it seems to allow you to use an action die twice. It says “bursts” which is what’s confusing to me, but that means you’re getting the double amount of energy to spend or double the ability, which could be devastating in a game.

Finally, Angela is a cost 4 BOLT again with cheap fielding and solid stats. This is an interesting card that allows you to deal 1 damage to target character die or player for each Angela die you rolled that shows an energy face after each Roll and Reroll Step. There’s an interesting mechanic there, but for the 4 BOLT cost to field it may be too weak to really make a major impact considering there’s other ways to do similar and greater damage.

WizKids Begins to Tease Their Deadpool Dice Masters Set

Out in November, the next Marvel Dice Masters set is based on the world of Deadpool. WizKids has started to tease what we can expect in the set by showing off by the uncommon Dogpool and common Deadpool. The set gives us a “Deadpool” team (shocker) with cards that’ll play off of that, and it looks like at least one new keyword “Deadly.”

They’ve also revealed the first Inhumans card, Lockjaw! The common card looks to be an interesting spin on the name the die mechanic that can do some serious damage to weenie swarm builds.

The set not only features characters from the world of Deadpool and Weapon X, but also some Spider-Verse characters and the first appearance of Inhumans. Super rares will continue the “What If?” theme. The set also features foil versions of every card like the recent DC Comics Dice Masters: Green Arrow and The Flash.

WizKids Shows off Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool, New TMNT, and Iron Man and War Machine

This past weekend was the Alliance Open House and WizKids took advantage to tease what fans of Dice Masters will be seeing over the next months.

In November, Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool will be released. The set will feature such favorites as Deadpool, Lady Deadpool, Dogpool, and Evil Deadpool. It’ll also include some Weapon X related characters such as Wolverine, X-23, the Stepford Cuckoos, and Mr. Sinister.

The set’s super rares will continue the “What If?” theme for Marvel sets featuring the cards below.

Also in the pipeline is new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Dice Masters with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Dice Masters: Heroes in a Half Shell Box Set. Like the first box set, this one is geared towards two and four players and I’m sure will deliver like the first set. Hopefully we’ll now be able to field a full team of Turtle characters (as of now you can only do seven of the eight needed).

Finally, Marvel Dice Masters: Iron Man and War Machine Starter Set will be released in 2017 and is the first annual starter set and will not be a part of a larger release. It is unknown if the content of the Starter Set will change at all as you needed the larger set to complete all of the dice needed to max out the cards from starters.

The set will feature Iron Man, War Machine, Howard Stark, and Rescue and versions of Iron Man’s armor not yet seen in Dice Masters. You can see below, we’ll be getting a Hulbuster version!

Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool in October

DeadpoolWe’ve gotten word that a new set for Dice Masters has been announced through store solicits. Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool will be released in October by Wizkids.

Unlike the recently announced Doctor Strange Team Pack, this looks to be a full set. So expect a starter, gravity feed, playmat, team box, and collector’s box. All of which are standard releases for a set.

The solicit reads:

Dice Masters is a global hit from WizKids. It uses the same proprietary Dice Building Game platform designed by Mike Elliott and Eric M. Lang. Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool will leave you rolling!

The merc with a mouth brings everything you love about him to Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool. It goes without saying that you’ll love seeing Deadpool, Lady Deadpool, Dogpool, and Evil Deadpool. Come to learn the ins and outs of the Weapon X project alongside Wolverine, X-23, the Stepford Cuckoos, and Mr. Sinister. If you’re looking for new stuff in Dice Masters you can’t miss this set – it will have the first appearance of Inhumans, new characters from the Spider-Verse, more characters from the pages of What If? like never before.

Each Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool Foil Pack contains two cards and two dice that players can add to their Dice Masters collections! Introducing more than 30 heroes and villains (and their dice!), Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool will be sure to spice up your Dice Masters collection!”

The release also sounds like a nice mix of old and new when it comes to cards and team affiliations. The set will include new Spider-Man characters after a set dedicated to just that world of comics a few months ago, as well as an “X” focus since it is Deadpool after all. The inclusion of popular characters such as Lady Deadpool, Dogpool mimics some previous releases for Wizkids’ other game Heroclix which saw a team dedicated just to Deadpool and his compatriots.

The inclusion of Inhumans makes sense and I’d expect to see a set down the road just focused on Marvel’s space based characters. While galactic characters such as Thanos, Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon have been included in past sets, a set focused on them and alien races could potentially add a lot to the game in both variety and mechanics.

Marvel sets so far have included Avengers vs. X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Age of Ultron, The Amazing Spider-Man, and next month will see the release of Civil War. It has also been announced that Civil War‘s super rares will be based on Marvel’s What If? line of comics, and Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool continues that theme of super rares, much like how DC sets are focused currently on Black Lanterns.
