War Cry, the Newest Graphic Novel Chapter of the Dresden Files!

Dynamite Entertainment has announced Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files: War Cry #1 which launches in June.

In War Cry, four months have passed since the events depicted in Dead Beat, the 7th novel in the Dresden Files series. A war is raging between the vampire forces of the Red Court and the White Council-a war the wizards are losing. So desperate are the Council that they’ve dragooned the experienced and the outcast to reinforce their thinning ranks of Wardens. One of these draftees is one Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only wizard for hire and a guy who’s long been looked upon with suspicion by the supernatural authorities. Now, he’s one of them, and his first big mission as a Warden is a doozy: take a small team of greenhorns to a frigid town in the middle of nowhere to rescue a handful of mortals who’ve been targeted by the Red Court. The question is, why exactly are these particular mortals so crucial to the outcome of the war? The answer will come only if Harry can keep them, and his team, alive for one very long night.

War Cry is co-written by Jim Butcher and Mark Powers.  Fans are in for a visual treat with this newest series, as the amazing Stjepan Sejic has signed on to do covers.  Carlos Gomez is handling the interior art on the series, and has been delivering stunning pages from day one.

War Cry #1 ships in June, shortly after the much-anticipated new novel in the Dresden Files series, Skin Game, published by Roc Books and releasing in stores everywhere May 27th.  The graphic novel collection of War Cry will be shipping later this year from Dynamite.

Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files: War Cry #1 is slated for release on June 4th, 2014.

Harry Dresden, a Chicago private investigator and wizard, heads to a small, isolated Missouri town terrorized by Nevernever monsters. The singularly unfortunate Talbot family has suffered a curse that has decimated their number for generations, and only our hero can save them… that is, if he can survive hostile lawmen, the dark secrets of townsfolk, an ancient guardian spirit, and two deadly carnivores! Can Dresden cleanse the Talbot bloodline of its curse without a blood sacrifice of his own?

This 160 page hardcover collects all six issues of the original Harry Dresden story “GHOUL GOBLIN” by JIM BUTCHER, MARK POWERS, and JOSEPH COOPER. It also features JIM BUTCHER’S original series summary, sketches by JOSEPH COOPER, and a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of GHOUL GOBLIN from script to pencils.

Harry Dresden came to rural Missouri to free the star-crossed Talbot family from the curse that’s nearly wiped out the bloodline. Unfortunately, his only two allies have been fired from the local police force and revealed as a carnivorous ghoul, respectively—oh, and he’s been arrested, leaving the aforementioned Talbots virtually defenseless against the supernatural creatures hunting them. Aside from that, things are great…

Harry’s sworn to protect the survivors and end the curse—something that can only be accomplished if he can convince them to take refuge in what amounts to a supernatural fortress. And if the ancient guardian spirit he’s summoned doesn’t kill him first…and if the local cops don’t toss him into a jail cell…

Harry’s traveled from his home turf of Chicago to investigate a series of inexplicable murders in a small Missouri town. He’s already managed to turn half the burg against him, with the other half’s motives even murkier. And that’s not even taking the Ghoul and Goblin who’ve both separately nearly killed him. Unfortunately, they may have succeeded in murdering the eldest of the cursed family he’s trying to protect—a man who harbors his own dark secrets. It’s time for Harry to seek the help of a higher authority…

Rest Volume 1 Trade Paperback CoverThere’s so much I enjoyed about Rest, but a lot I had trouble with as well.  Written by Mark Powers with art by Shawn McManus, Marco Castiello and Abhishek Malsuni the story is about an experimental drug that causes it’s user to no longer need to sleep.  The idea of a society that runs 24/7 intrigues me, and I hoped that’s what this series would explore.  That’s also its biggest let down.  While some of the implications are mentioned (the increased need for resources, but also increased output) that’s it, they’re mentioned.  There’s no debate at all as to whether this would benefit society.

The long awaited collection produced by Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia and DiVide Pictures with story by Mike O’Sullivan arrives! John Barrett is a man going nowhere. In his late 20′s, he’s stuck in a dead-end job with no friends and no future. When his best friend from college mysteriously resurfaces with news of a new wonder drug that replaces sleep, John falls into a conspiracy that threatens to change the course of human history! Written by Mark Powers (GI Joe), art by Shawn McManus (Sandman) and Marco Castiello (Witchblade) and covers by the industry’s hottest talents including Tim Sale (Heroes), Phil Jimenez (Amazing Spider-man) and others. This volume collects Rest #0-5 along with a cover gallery, behind-the-scenes commentary and sketches, and much more!

Instead we’re left with a cheesy corporate thriller.  A man takes the drug, possible other corporations are out to get it out of his system.  The failed previous experiments and that cover up.  That’s what we’re left with.  There’s so much promise in the first half, but the second feels like a bad action movie.  Of course there are the people against the release of the drug to society for their not quite convincing reasons, and a brief hint as to what we’d expect if the drug did make it into the world.  But it’s all barely touched upon.  We could have had an amazing commentary on corporate greed or corporations playing god.  But instead, the series comes off as a toe-bit “B” grade action movie.

So much potential that’s never reached and that’s the disappointment.  The series is entertaining enough and it’s absolutely unique, but it’s potential that’s never quite reached.  If you’re looking for a unique comic, it’s worth it, but I can’t quite give it my enthusiastic recommendation.
