Review: Umbral #6

Umbral06-Cover“We all do what we must to survive. It’s the strongest instinct. Which means that sometimes, when things don’t go the way we want them to…we do things we never expected.”
– Rascal

Umbral #6 closes out the first arc, ‘Out Of The Shadows’, and continues Rascal’s struggle to stay at least one step ahead of the Redguard and the Umbral. Antony Johnston and Christopher Mitten’s new dark fantasy has proven to be a top book on everyone’s pull list and if you’re not reading this wonderful world-building comic you are missing out. Each issue in the first arc has done an excellent job at creating an imaginative and inventive world that you would come to expect from the same creators of Wasteland. This latest issue completes Rascal’s first chapter and, like the season finale of your favorite television show, answers some lingering questions and prepares you for the next installment.

We last left Rascal hiding out with her friends in the Red Princess Tavern as Prince Arthir (whom we know is an Umbral) and his associates come looking for them. During their escape, Profoss Munty reveals he has a chao-dak, what appears to be a gun of some sort. He shoots the man that threatens Shayim, but loses the gun to Rascal when descending the rope from the tavern room. Prince Arthir finally catches up to Rascal and she threatens to use the gun him, but not before outing him to all his henchmen as being an Umbral himself.

When Rascal and her friends finally get to a safe spot, Dalone attempts to teach Rascal magic and we learn a little more about her life, but it raises more questions then it answers. What is her real name? What was her relationship with her mom like? I assume that’s what the Umbral that attacked Rascal was referring to when she was sleeping. What happened to her? All great questions that we can’t wait to find the answer to, but we will have to wait until the next arc or perhaps longer to find out. Dalone begins teaching Rascal magic and Profoss Munty is the perfect match with ‘science-proves-anything’ take on everything. We learn some secrets about Dalone as well in this issue and his magic powers play a prominent role. Faith versus Science might play an important part in the following arc as Rascal attempts to wield magic to take on the Umbral.

Mitten, Boyd and Mauer combine to create a visual experience in every issue and they continue their brilliant work in chapter six. I love how unique the art is in Umbral and how it looks like nothing I have seen before. The varying shades of purple make each sequence with the Umbral leap from the page. The writing mixes with the art harmoniously making this a comic book not to be missed. I can’t wait to read the next chapter in Rascal’s journey and if it’s anything like the first one then we are in for a great ride.

Thoughts and Discussion

– Who was the man eavesdropping on the king and queen?

– Who was Rascal’s mom, if that is who the Umbral was referencing?

– What is Rascal’s real name and what was her life like before she took control of the Oculus?

– I wonder what the rules are for who or what the Umbral can turn into.

Review: Umbral #5

Umbral05-Cover“…I am the one who understands how special Rascal is. I am the one who will teach her to wield magic, to save us all from Umbral.”
– Dalone

Comic books tell all sorts of different tales. There are ‘crime of the week’ ones. Stories from outer space. Superhero tales with elaborate histories. Zombie apocalyspe stories. Vampires. Robots. You name it, and there is a genre that I’m sure you will enjoy and love. Umbral is none of those kinds of tales. Umbral is in a class all it’s own, wielding characters that you love and hate and some that inspire. Each issue is jam-packed with quality story-telling and magnificent art and Issue #5 sets the stage for the final issue in the outstanding first arc.

We last left Rascal in the Red Princess Tavern hiding out from the Thieves Guild that want her captured and need the Oculus she possesses. Umbral #5 continues right where we last seen our lovable characters, hiding out inside their room and Profoss Munty joining them. The diversity and world, that Johnston and Mitten have created, make this such a sophisticated tale that you will kick yourself in years to come if you don’t jump on now. The ink and the colors are very different than anything else on my Pull List. The best part of this issue is we learn that our favorite Wizard, Dalone, is still alive but what we don’t know is if he is an Umbral meant to look like him or if it is actually him. I hope it’s him because I enjoy his and back and forth with Rascal.

Munty tells us a tale of Stakan, a warrior of long ago, who lead the armies of man to rid the world of the Umbral that had taken over. His tale gives us vivd detail of the history Rascal’s world is set in. This is something I have been looking forward to since issue one and would make any comic that much more interesting. We learn that long ago there were three brothers that controlled the different lands across the globe; Tenebros in Vast Mordenos, Luxan controlled Ocus Luxana, and Umbral, or the underworld (read:Hell), was lead by brother number three, Umbrith. Umbrith coveted his brother’s land and created a situation where they would fight and weaken themselves. Umbrith used the resulting magic to create the Shadow Creatures that we know to be Umbral. Now we know how they came to be named and how they were created. All three brothers were extinguished in the ensuing struggle and The Peak, a mountain formed of magic Mist, was formed.

I won’t spoil the rest of the history for you but I will tell you that Strakan, the warrior I mentioned earlier, rose in the ranks to become a legendary hero, which I’m sure is where the city of Strakhelm got it’s name. The rich history we are told really fleshes out the story and gives us even more information of what is happening and why. Rascal’s world has grown so much in the past few issues that the choices in front of her, in regard to escaping, are endless. Prince Arthir (whom we know to be an Umbral form previous issues) is hot on their trail and actually catches up to them at the Red Princess Tavern before they escape to an adjoining room.

Issue #5 is a great read and is essential in our understanding of the world Johnston and Mitten have created for us. We learn the origins of the Umbral, however, more questions are raised when Dalone returns. What is the Orbis he was speaking of? How did Dalone survive? Most importantly, what is it that the Umbral ultimately want. The Oculus must be more significant than Munty made it out to be if Prince Arthir is trying so desperately to attain it. The continuing struggle of Rascal and her friends comes together nicely in this issue of Umbral and the art by Mitten, Boyd, and Mauer continue to mesmerize. Chasing Shadows, the title of issue six, can’t get here soon enough so we can learn more about this spirited and magical land.

Thoughts and Discussion

– What is the Orbis?

– Is Dalone an Umbral or did he really survive last issue?

– What do the Umbral ultimately seek? Do they just want to destroy everything or are they after Magic? Or is it something else entirely that we have yet to learn?

– Is Profoss Munty being completely honest with Rascal and Shayim? Something tells me that something fishy is going on.

Review: Umbral #4

Umbral04-CoverThe team that created Umbral has provided us with a vast and wonderful world filled with atypical heroes and equally strange scary creatures lurking about. Each issue is filled with magnificent art and edge-of-your-seat storytelling. Also, who doesn’t love chase scenes? Last issue gave us plenty to worry about with Rascal and Dalone wondering what happened in the  Cave of Black Rojyr’s. The scene was that they were staring at was one of utter destruction that  could have only been caused by Umbral. The issue ended with Dalone saving Rascal and Shayim from the Umbral attack and Rascal attempting to spark the Oculus with blood from Shayim’s wound. At the end we see an Umbral shape-shift into Prince Arthir whom we saw die in front Rascal in issue #1.

Since this is going to be a very large story with lots of characters and lands I think it will be important to go over what we know so far before getting into issue #4 and beyond.

We are in a kingdom called Fendin with our main character being Rascal, a poor peasant girl with an attitude and a penchant for thievery and smuggling. Magic and religion are against the law but, of course, whenever you make a law there are people that want to break them. Their are creatures, called Umbral, that we don’t know much about other than the fact that they require a special “Mist” to survive and for power and can sense when it is near. Umbral also seek an object, that Rascal now possesses, called the Oculus which has belonged to the royal family for a long time. It’s exact purpose is still yet unknown. The Umbral have killed the King and Queen and their son, Prince Arthir, but the kingdom folk don’t know that since Umbral can shape-shift and have done so to resemble them. So far Rascal has escaped the city of Strakhelm with the help of a mysterious stranger named Dalone. We like Dalone and it’s fun to read the banter back and forth between him and Rascal. At this point before issue #4 we don’t know if Dalone is alive or not (we are hoping for alive of course) and Shayim and Rascal are surrounded by Umbral after they are discovered in Black Rojyr’s Cave. On to issue #4.

The issue begins right where the last one ended with Rascal and Shayim escaping the Umbral. Rascal touched the Oculus with blood and we learn something new; when that happens they get transported into the Umbrith, a kind of other dimension. I know, this is getting strange, but trust me, it’s a great story. They come across Fadreki’s Fang, Black Rojyr’s ship but have no idea how it’s there since he’s been dead for a very long time. My favorite part of this book are all the elements they add whenever it’s needed, not as a plot twist or some other device. The writer doesn’t need a cliffhanger everywhere to draw audiences. They need a ghost ship, they put a ghost ship in…on page 3! The art is fantastic, but more on that later. Rascal comes across Prince Arthir but we know it’s really an Umbral who shape-shifted, so let’s call him Umbral Arthir.

This probably is the only problem I have with the issue so far. Rascal knows Arthir is dead and she held his arm after it was detached from the rest of his body but she has no problem welcoming him during her escape. Rascal had no problem stabbing Shayim in the leg for suspecting her to be an Umbral but now she does nothing. After their meeting with Umbra Arthir we get to meet for the first time Black Rojyr, the pirate the caves are named after with his ghostly crew mates in tow. They help Rascal and Shayim escape and are friendly enough to fight off the Umbral to give them some time. So, I guess, Rascal finds out that Arthir is an Umbral after all. They get away, and with the advice of Black Rojyr, head for the Endless Ladders. It leads them to a hatch and they barricade it to stop Umbral Arthir from entering. They are welcomed by a man simply named Captain who helps them in finding Profoss Munty.

The B story this issue is the Thieves Guild and Master Gearge, whom we know to be an Umbral as well. What we don’t know is if all the other members, besides Rascal, know if he is an Umbral. They have employed the Kin of the Whispered Blade to seek out the Oculus and return it to them. We also learn that Umbral have families and can be killed but are very strong and resourceful.

Issue #4 is a great read. If you haven’t picked up this book yet I suggest you get the back issues or wait for the trade. If you enjoy stories like Game of Thrones or magic or scary creatures lurking in the shadows then this book has elements from all of them. This issue is definitely coming close to the end of its first arc so the action is thickening and we are learning more with each page turn (I just hope we find out the fate of Dalone before then). The art matches the style of Johnston’s writing perfectly. It’s gritty when needed and smooth and fast when Rascal is on the run. I really love when comics make it so I can’t wait for the next issue and this title delivers with magic and more. Definitely worth your time.
