Review: Devolution #5

The last humans on Earth face Neanderthal hordes and the bastards who started this whole mess. Can there be a solution? A death. A compromise. A lie. The big twist comes. Check out the thrilling series finale from Rick Remender, self-described as “a heavy dose of high-octane action, character drama, a world of strange reverse mutations, and social commentary – as we follow the last tribe of humans inoculated from the devolution agent as they set out on a desperate journey to try to find a way to re-evolve life on Earth.

What a shocking ending to such an underrated series.  Given the ending in Devolution #5, it does make me wonder if they are going to try and continue the series in a second volume. This entire issue is full of surprises, so be prepared. Especially since one of those surprises could be an easy spin-off with a new set of characters.

Artist Jonathan Wayshak manages to capture some of the stranger, more surprising moments in this final issue well. That big surprise has a simple appearance, but seems to have a strong grounding in reality. The strange figure in the ending is creepy and wonderful.

Once a bastion of forward thinking and the arts, San Francisco is now anything but. Can our crew survive the home of the most savage tribe of Thralls alive and make it to the re-evolution agent? Check out the thrilling new series that Rick Remender describes as “a heavy dose of high-octane action, character drama, a world of strange reverse mutations, and social commentary – as we follow the last tribe of humans inoculated from the devolution agent as they set out on a desperate journey to try to find a way to re-evolve life on Earth.

Just when you think it couldn’t get much worse for Raja, it manages to. She reveals why she is so determined to reverse the virus, that has changed the world. I won’t spoil her reason, but I think it may surprise some readers. She does succeed in finding the serum that will reverse this, but is stopped by a strange pair of men. I’m curious to see how this series concludes with only one issue left.

The art by Jonathan Wayshak is surreal, as they arrive in San Francisco. Only to find it filled with cavemen, mammoths, and other animals affected by the virus. I will admit the way the two strange men at the end are drawn, makes me wonder where they came from. Let alone why they are dressed in something that looks like it does.

Raja and the rebel Marines have set out on a journey across the devolved wasteland to try and save humanity, only some of humanity like things just as they are. Will the thrilling roller-coaster ride of Devolution stop?  I doubt it, as the monstrous primitive animals began their chase of Raja, and the rebel marines. Along with the violent Neo-Nazis who are chasing Raja, and the rest of them, seeking only one thing. Revenge.

Gritty, giant animals, and ruinous landscapes complete this strange sci-fi series. I will admit the addition of giant, primitive animals are a nice bolstering of the superb environments. Honestly, I’m not sure what they could add in either story or art to make me love this series anymore.

The road to salvation is lined with Nazi hillbillies and Neanderthals. Raja finds that trusting people is a bad idea.

In the explosive second issue of Devolution, a lot happens, yet at the same time very little does too. Now that Raja is captured by Nazi hillbillies, and is placed in its leader dungeon to be used. Of course that doesn’t last as she manages a daring escape/rescue with a little help. As she escapes from bondage, an explosive firefight ensues.

Honestly I love how the art by Jonathan Wayshak manages to capture the determination of Raja and her will to escape. As well simultaneously capturing the violence, action, and flow of the story. Even the realism of the characters, while maintaining the gritty violence of a world where humanity has changed is still impressive to see.

Every living creature on Earth has been devolved – the evolutionary clock turned back, reverting all life to odd mutations and prehistoric incarnations. The cities of man are little more than bloody territories ruthlessly dominated by tribal Neanderthals ruling from the backs of mammoths, packs of saber-toothed tigers, and giant man-eating insects. Writer Rick Remender (Black Science, Fear Agent), artist Jon Wayshak (The Authority), and colorist Jordan Boyd (Ant-Man, Planet Hulk) take
you on a journey with the last band of “Still Sapien” humans in the hope of locating an antidote and re-evolving the human race.

2016 is just beginning but, this series is definitely on my pull list for the year.

The story by writer Rick Remender reminds me to some extent of I Am Legend, in terms of the sheer bleakness, and hopelessness of the world. There is something primitive about the world, despite the modern aspect of the setting. The pages are filled with action, and violence and the story is incredibly engrossing from the start. Not all is perfect though. The last few pages feel very out of place. It leaves me to wonder how they connect to the main story.

The art by Jonathan Wayshak is well done, and easily succeeds i creating a dark, bleak atmosphere. Despite that bleak setting, there is no lack of color in the world and that’s thanks to the talents of Jordan Boyd. Despite the last few pages being out of place, they are well drawn, with a great degree of realism. However the affected humans have some odd proportions, and are slightly inconsistent in size and stature. They do seem to share the same muscular build, and they use that well in the scenes they are in, but there’s some oddness to that.
