Review: Star Trek Classics: The Mirror Universe Saga

Star Trek Classics: The Mirror Universe Saga

Today’s generation of Star Trek fans are much fortunate in many ways. Technology has lot to do with it, as they have ways to connect with other fans around the world without ever meeting them. Streaming plays a large part in that as well , as they can watch several series within the franchise and at least two new shows before the year ends.

The one thing that just about every series has touched except for ST:TNG, is the Mirror Universe. As Discovery’s first season went right into making multiple visits over its 4 season run. My favorite was Enterprise’s adventure into that dark abyss, even changing the their theme song, into something ominous. In a story that has not seen publication in 30 years, we find the crew of the Enterprise shortly after the events of Star Trek III: The Search For Spock, facing evil versions of themselves in Star Trek Classics: The Mirror Universe Saga.

We find Spock still recovering from the events of Star Trek III, as his friends visit him, he still has trouble remembering exactly who they are. As Kirk, still reeling from the death of his son, appreciates the peace but something is wrong in the universe, as the Enterprise has just destroyed the research station where his ex-wife and the mother of his son as this crew is from the Mirror Universe. They wreak havoc across the fleet, wrecking the USS Courageous, but not before they run into the heroes we know, as a standoff between the counterparts, leads to some intense stare downs., where the good counterparts get captured. They would soon break free from their captors, and Kirk would find an ally onboard this version of the Enterprise, from his last adventure in the Mirror Universe, Marlena, who knows how beat this crew., taking control of the ship while their Mirror Universe counterparts hijack the the Excelsior and the Klingon Bird Of Prey they took during Search For Spock. While the evil version of Spock returns to Vulcan and gets into a fierce mind meld with the newly reborn Spock. Our heroes hatch a plan to enter the Mirror Universe and exact revenge on the invaders, but their plan fails, when their true identities are be found out, causing the crew to seek help from an unlikely ally in this universe, the Klingons. By the book’s end, they restore everything in order, and Kirk and Spock get their own commands.

Overall, Star Trek Classics: The Mirror Universe Saga is an action packed story, which is worthy of being a movie. The story by Barr is exciting. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, one of the best stories to come from original DC Comics run of Star Trek.

Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation—Best of Captain Picard

Star Trek: The Next Generation—Best of Captain Picard

In the most recent episode of Young Sheldon, it exposed one of the open secrets of Star Trek fandom. That there lies a schism between the different generations. Of course, this is nothing new. As this very issue lies within the Star Wars fandom, one which divides them, and is very apparent in the how the fans feel about The Book Of Boba Fett.

As the scene that expositions this difference, was when Sheldon got into a debate with another fan of whether or not ST:TNG is as good or better than ST:TOS. They had gone over all the reasons why one was better than the other. As a fan of all the series, I can honestly say that love the shows after the original cast, as they broadened that world and made us all fall in love with new characters and worlds. I especially ST:TNG, as it  fulfilled the promise the original series gave the world.. As I am partial to one captain, and with his new series, I can see I am not the only one , as IDW decided to do a collection of past stories in in a beautiful one shot, Star Trek: The Next Generation—Best of Captain Picard.

In “The Q Conflict”, Q creates a conflict between the TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager crews. In “The Mirror Broken#1”, we find a very evil version of the crew in the Mirror Universe, one where war is where they thrive. In “ DC Originals:TNG#1-Return to Raimon Part 1”,Picard uncovers a conspiracy to murder a monarch, one that puts the away crew in danger. In the last story“Picard#1”,  we find out about what transpired in Picard’s final year before the events of the first season of Picard.

Overall, Star Trek: The Next Generation—Best of Captain Picard is an excellent collection that shows the character’s transcendence. The stories by the different creators are fun and action packed. The art by the different creators are beautiful. Altogether, this set of stories shows why fans have long loved this character.

Moonstone Books Kickstarts a Kolchak: The Night Stalker 50th Anniversary Graphic Novel

On Tuesday, January 11, 1972, Kolchak: The Night Stalker terrified and delighted audiences on ABC. The TV movie — written by horror legend Richard Matheson and based on an unpublished novel by Jeff Rice — was the highest-rated TV movie in U.S. history. It subsequently spawned both a second TV movie, The Night Stalker, and a cult TV series that ran for just one season, but inspired a generation of storytellers, notably including X-Files creator Chris Carter.

Moonstone Books is celebrating this pop culture milestone with a Kickstarter campaign for Kolchak: The Night Stalker 50th Anniversary Graphic Novel, edited by James Aquilone. This all-new, 100+ page, full-color graphic novel will feature 10 startling stories chronicling the life of monster-hunting reporter Carl Kolchak. The stories are written by such master storytellers as David Avallone, Rodney Barnes, James Chambers, Nancy Collins, Peter David, Kim Newman, Jonathan Maberry, Richard Christian Matheson, Tim Waggoner, and Aquilone, and illustrated by such amazing artists as Jonathan Marks Barravecchia, Marco Finnegan, Warwick Johnson-Cadwell, Paul McCaffrey, Clara Meath, Julius Ohta, Tom Rogers, J.K. Woodward, and Colton Worley. It features covers by Colton Worley, Jerry Ordway and J.K. Woodward as well as lettering by Thomas Napolitano, coloring by Zac Atkinson, and text design by Shawn T. King.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker 50th Anniversary Graphic Novel also includes an introduction by Richard Christian Matheson, the bestselling horror author/screenwriter/producer and son of The Night Strangler writer Richard Matheson, an essay on the 50th anniversary by Mark Dawidziak, the author of The Nightstalker Companion, and a retrospective of Moonstone Book’s Kolchak publication history by publisher Joe Gentile.

The Kolchak: The Night Stalker 50th Anniversary Graphic Novel Anthology will be available in limited-edition softcover and hardcover editions, both with variant covers. In addition Moonstone Books is creating a special 40-page standalone comic for the Kickstarter, featuring the story “Satanic Panic ’88,” written by James Aquilone and illustrated by Colton Worley, and featuring a cover by Dan Brereton.
