V for Vendetta Mask Spotted at Egyptian Embassy Protests

The attacks on the American embassies in Egypt and Libya and loss of life horrific. What’s becoming a more common site at protest, a Guy Fawkes masked, used in the graphic novel and movie V for Vendetta was worn by at least one protestor. As a symbol of protest, the mask has become popular first with the online group Anonymous and then adopted by others including Block Bloc and the Occupy movement.

People are up in arms over what they consider an inflammatory film about Islam. The origins of the film are murky. The US ambassador to Libya as well as some staff were killed in the attacks there.

In Tunisia, Show Persepolis and Get Fined

In early May, a panel of five Tunisian judges Thursday convicted TV magnate Nabil Karoui of “disturbing public order” and “threatening public morals” by broadcasting the French animated movie Persepolis, based on the acclaimed graphic novel Marjane Satrapi.  Karoui was fined $1,600 while two members of his staff were each fined $800.  Prosecutors and lawyers representing Islamist groups felt they should be sentenced up to five years and a few even called for the death penalty.

The verdict was posted on a courtroom wall and the judges felt the case had brought out many to argue over the limits of free speech in a fledgling democracy just 15 months after a revolution.  Some felt the decision was a sign that the country would still limit speech that devout Muslims consider offensive and showed boundaries for the freedom of the press.

The U.S. ambassador to Tunisia, Gordon Gray, issued a statement condemning the decision.

I am concerned and disappointed by this conviction for Nessma television’s broadcast of an animated film previously approved for distribution by the Tunisian government.  His conviction raises serious concerns about tolerance and freedom of expression in the new Tunisia.

Interestingly enough before the revolution, the Tunisian government had issued a certification approving Persepolis for showing in the country.  Clerics felt the movie insulted Muslim values because it shows the face of God during a scene where he talks to the main character in the movie.

Four Charged for Plot to Attack Danish Paper that Printed Muhammad Cartoons

Greater Copenhagen in Denmark

Danish prosecutors charged four Swedes living in Denmark with a plan to attack the Danish newspaper who had printed controversial cartoons about Muhammad.  The four planned a shooting spree inside the Copenhagen offices of the Jyllands-Posten newspaper.  Swedish and Danish intelligence officials had been following the men for months.

The suspects wanted “to seriously frighten the population” and kill “a larger number of people.”  The Danish Security and Intelligence Service described some of the suspects as “militant Islamists with relations to international terror networks.”  The men were also arrested and charged with possession of

illegal weapons.

The Jyllands-Posten had asked Danish cartoonists to draw the prophet as a challenge to self-censorship.

The trial would start on April 13 with the verdict is expected on June 14.

So…. yesterday was kind of awesome…. I want to start today’s news by thanking the other comic book websites that went dark and the creators that spoke out.  For those that didn’t I can only think of that speech from The People vs. Larry Flynt where he condemns the media for his having to go to jail to defend their rights.

The fight over the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) is not over, there’s still a long way to go.  I hope you’ll continue your support and we’ll see even more.

For those who were so patient with a lack of news yesterday, here’s what you might have missed.

Official Press Release

ComiXology and Teshkeel Media Group Join Forces to Launch THE 99 App and Webstore

Superheroes Based on Islamic Archetypes Spread Message of Peace and Tolerance to a Digital World

President Obama calls THE 99 “perhaps the most innovative response” to America’s expanding dialogue with the Muslim world

November 3, 2011 – NYC, NY / Kuwait City, Kuwait — ComiXology and Teshkeel Media Group today announced the release of THE 99 iOS app and Webstore to sell Teshkeel’s bestselling superhero comic books digitally throughout the world. THE 99 comic series is now available across the comiXology platform — iOS, Android and the Web!

To celebrate the launch, comiXology is offering a FREE introductory issue THE 99 Beginnings, the 72-page story of the origins of THE 99. Also, issue #1 through #6 are now available for sale for only $1.99 an issue on the comiXology platform.  Additional issues of THE 99 will be released on a weekly basis with every three issues being collected into a special issue at a special price.

“All of us at comiXology are proud to be a part of bringing THE 99 to a huge new audience through THE 99 iOS app and Webstore,” said comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger. “These top notch superhero comic books are great entertainment and at the same time teach lessons of peace and tolerance. We’re happy that any comic fan with an Apple iOS device or a computer hooked up to the Internet can enjoy these comics any time and any place in the world”

“We’re pleased to partner with comiXology to help bring the message of THE 99 to digital comic fans across the globe,” said Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, Teshkeel’s CEO and creator of THE 99. “ComiXology has proven itself the market leader in digital comics and is a great fit to bring THE 99 to a whole new audience.”

Most recently in the news for being the focus of the PBS documentary WHAM! BAM! ISLAM!, THE 99 has been a lightening rod for controversy since creator Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa conceived of the superhero group as a way to spread a much needed message of peace and tolerance to young families throughout the Middle East and the West. Soon after publication began, the comic series was banned for a time in Saudi Arabia and just this past year anti-Islamic fringe groups in the United States helped scuttle the U.S. launch of THE 99 animated television series.

The success of the comic series led to the co-production of an animated television series with media giant Endemol, the world’s largest syndicator of television programs. While THE 99 looks for a broadcast outlet in the U.S., the television series will debut throughout the rest of the world early in 2012.

In 2010, President Obama, a well-known fan of comics, called THE 99 “perhaps the most innovative response” to America’s expanding dialogue with the Muslim world.
