Baltimore Comic Con 2014: Simone Keynotes and Uslan Hosts the 2014 Harvey Awards

Michael UslanOn Saturday night, September 6th, the comic book industry, including professionals, retailers, and fans, will gather at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore to honor the 2014 Harvey Award Nominees for 2013 comic work and present the Harveys to their recipients. This is an exciting evening, highlighted by our host Michael Uslan, Originator and Executive Producer of the dark and serious Batman film franchise, from 1989’s “Batman” through “The Dark Knight Trilogy” to the upcoming “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

Harvey Awards tickets are on sale NOW! Tickets to the event, which includes full cocktail hour (cash bar), full service dinner (featuring a Baltimore Crabcake!), awards ceremony, and a gift bag, are now available for $125.

Host Michael Uslan is a titan in the entertainment industry. His projects have won Emmy Awards, Oscars, Peoples Choice Awards, and Annie Awards. His involvement in comics and big- and small-screen adaptations is both broad and long.

As a comics writer, Uslan’s work dates back to the 1970s and has included works such as DC Comics’ Batman: Detective #27, Batman: Black and White, Just Imagine Stan Lee, The Shadow, The Question, Will Eisner’s The Spirit, Archie Comics’ Archie Marries and Life with Archie, TokyoPop’s The Mysterians, a revival of the syndicate comic strip Terry and the Pirates, and, most recently, Archie Comics’ Farewell Betty & Veronica, Dynamite Entertainment’s The Shadow & Green Hornet: Dark Nights, and its new Justice Inc.

Perhaps more broadly, Uslan is recognized as Executive Producer on numerous comic adaptations to film and DVD, including such films as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Batman, Batman Returns, and The Lego Movie. He is also an Executive Producer of the Batman animated movies on DVD, and a Producer on Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Constantine, as well as the upcoming Doc Savage.

On the small screen, Uslan has served as Executive Producer of the comic book documentaries, The Marvel Super-Heroes Guide to New York City and Legends Behind the Comic Books.

Beyond writing comics, he has written about comics, including his recently published memoir from Chronicle Books, The Boy Who Loved Batman.

He is a recipient of numerous industry accolades and awards, both in comics and entertainment.

The Hero Initiative will present 2 awards to outstanding members of the comics community! The Hero Initiative was established to aid comic creators with a financial safety net when in need of emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work.

The Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award will also be presented at the Harvey Awards Banquet. Giordano, who passed away in early 2010, was part of Hero Initiative’s Board of Directors. His legacy epitomizes the caring and commitment Hero Initiative strives to achieve. In his honor, the Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award will recognize one person in comics each year who has demonstrated the generosity and integrity Dick brought to the charity, and to the comic book community at large.

gail simoneGail Simone will be the 2014 Keynote Speaker. Simone is a force to be reckoned with in the comics industry. Her razor-sharp writing and witty comedic sense have made her a stand-out in the field.

Simone is a critically acclaimed, fan-favorite writer of comic books and animation. She has written classic runs on such titles as Batgirl, Birds of Prey, Deadpool, Secret Six, and Action Comics. Her creator-owned graphic novel, Leaving Megalopolis, created with co-creator and artist Jim Calafiore, was the highest funded straight comics project in Kickstarter history. She has written animation for Wonder Woman, Tomb Raider, Brave and the Bold, and Justice League United, and is currently working on the comics Tomb Raider, Red Sonja, and several creator-owned projects.

This year’s Baltimore Comic-Con will be held September 5-7, 2014. Convention hours are Friday 1pm to 7pm, Saturday 10am to 7pm, and Sunday 10am to 5pm. The ceremony and banquet for the Harvey Awards will be held Saturday night, September 6th.

Baltimore Comic Con 2014: Harvey Kurtzman Hall of Fame Award Premieres in 2014 at the Harvey Awards

harvey awards logoThe Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con are thrilled to announce the introduction of the Harvey Kurtzman Hall of Fame Award, which will be presented at this year’s Harvey Award ceremony on Saturday, September 6, 2014 in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con!

Premiering in 2014, the Harvey Kurtzman Hall of Fame Award honors cartoonists for their significant, cultural impact: men and women who write, draw, and create compelling graphical content that has both artistic excellence and an impact to the culture and the industry. Harvey Kurtzman exemplified that excellence in the extensive catalog of his work and life. We are proud to expand the Harvey Awards tradition with the introduction of the Harvey Kurtzman Hall of Fame Award.

The first Harvey Kurtzman Hall of Fame Award will be presented posthumously to the legendary Charles M. Schulz, the creative genius behind the long-running comic strip Peanuts. Schulz, or “Sparky” as he was affectionately called, was born in 1922 in Minneapolis, MN, and created what is arguably one of the most influential comic strips of all times, setting the scene for what comic strip artists hoped to achieve in readership, draftsmanship, and licensing. After penning a weekly strip for the St. Paul Pioneer Press from 1947 to 1950 called Li’l Folks and, after being dropped from the paper, approached United Feature Syndicate with a new idea that would become Peanuts, which debuted in 1950. The strip, still running today in reprints, would ultimately go on to run in 2,600 papers in 75 countries (and in 21 languages). Schulz created new strips consistently, with the exception of a 5-week break to celebrate his 75th birthday, until the strip’s retirement in 2000.

Receiving the Harvey Kurtzman Hall of Fame Award on behalf of Schulz will be Karen Johnson, Director of the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, CA. The museum houses thousands of original artworks created by Charles M. Schulz for Peanuts as well as letters, photographs, unique Peanuts products, and tribute artwork. It is also home to permanent and rotating exhibitions, as well as a research center with a vast variety of archival information related to Schulz, his life, and his works. Ms. Johnson will be hosting a panel Saturday at the Baltimore Comic-Con, and will be presenting Schulz artwork that no one has seen before.

The eponymous Harvey Kurtzman, who passed away in 1993 at 68 years of age, was a cartoonist, writer, editor and comics genius. He is probably best remembered for his 28 revolutionary issues of MAD, which he founded in 1952 for E.C. publisher Bill Gaines. Kurtzman then created the short-lived satire magazine Trump for Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner in 1957. He followed with the comic-size Humbug in 1958, then Help! magazine (where he discovered such diverse talent as Terry Gilliam, Gloria Steinem, Gilbert Shelton, and R. Crumb). In 1962, he and collaborator Will Elder began producing the long-running and elaborate Little Annie Fanny comic for Playboy. In the ’70s he became known as the “father-in-law of underground comix” for inspiring a new generation of media-bending cartoonists. Kurtzman had a great deal of love and admiration for the works of Charles M. Schulz, even creating an unpublished Little Annie Fanny strip featuring Annie as a little girl playing with the Peanuts characters, so it is particularly appropriate for this first award to go to Schulz.

Sal Buscema SSM1The Baltimore Comic-Con has announced that legendary Marvel Comics artist, Sal Buscema, will be joining the guest list for the 14th annual show, taking place September 7-8, 2013. Buscema will be appearing at the show on Saturday only and will be receiving the HERO Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be presented at the Harvey Awards Banquet Saturday evening.

Sal Buscema got his start at Marvel Comics in 1968, joining his brother John who was already an established artist with the company. Cutting his teeth on such titles as Western Gunfighters, The Rawhide Kid, and The Silver Surfer, he got his big break in 1969 when he took over art duties for Marvel’s premiere superhero team, The Avengers.

During the course of his career, Buscema has drawn nearly every character in the Marvel Universe, including career-defining runs on Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, Captain America, Incredible Hulk, Marvel Team-Up, and Thor. He even worked briefly for DC Comics from 1997-1999, drawing such characters as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

His 45-year career is being honored with the presentation of the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award at the Harvey Awards Banquet. The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally-chartered non-profit organization dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need, and creates a financial safety net for yesterday’s creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. The Lifetime Achievement Award honors those creators who have made lasting contributions with the world of sequential art throughout their careers.

2013 Harvey Award Nominees Announced!

The 2013 Harvey Awards Nominees have been announced with the release of the final ballot, presented by the Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con. Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry’s most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. They will be presented September 7, 2013 in Baltimore, MD, in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con.

Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators – those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit, or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. They are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Thank you to all that have already participated by submitting a nomination ballot.

Final ballots are due to the Harvey Awards by Monday, August 19, 2013.

This will be the eighth year for the Harvey Awards in Baltimore, MD. This year’s Baltimore Comic-Con will be held September 7-8, 2013. The ceremony and banquet for the 2013 HarveyAwards will be held Saturday night, September 7th.

Congrats to all of the nominees!
