Wonder Woman Passes Guardians of the Galaxy When it Comes to “Profit”

We love our numbers here and while crunching this week’s numbers to see how 2017’s comic adaptations shape up, Wonder Woman unlocked another achievement. The film passed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to become the most “profitable” comic adaptation of 2017 so far.

Worldwide, Wonder Woman has earned $812.6 million on a reported $149 million budget. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has earned $863.1 million on a reported $200 million budget. That means Wonder Woman has a “profit of $663.6 million compared to Guardian‘s $663.1 million. Now, we don’t know the advertising budget for the film or other things like back end, so official numbers may differ, but the reported public data has Wonder Woman on top.

Still, when it comes to budget, Logan is king having a 6.35 multiplier compared to the second place Wonder Woman‘s 5.45.

2017 feels like it’s shaping up to be a wild ride for comic adaptions. We look at who the real winners and losers are for this year’s comic films.

Marvel’s Inhumans debuted this past weekend earning $1.5 million domestically and $1.1 million internationally. This is a tough one to include, but I’m going to, as it’s a hybrid television show and movie produced by IMAX, Marvel, and ABC. It’ll be included in the totals for now even though there’s no budget to figure everything out. That may change in the future and be treated like other special releases from previous years.

The big news is that Wonder Woman continues to impress passing $400 million at the foreign box office. The movie is the top earning movie domestically for DC’s movie universe by a solid $78 million (and counting). The film however is third internationally behind both Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad and likely won’t pass either. It’s the second highest earning DC movie worldwide. Wonder Woman is also the top earning comic film domestically for the year so far.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is at $324.1 million domestically, and with its $422.1 million, the film has earned $746.2 million worldwide. The film has now passed Suicide Squad worldwide. While the film has done better than average domestically for a Spider-Man film it lags internationally.

Atomic Blonde is at $89.8 million worldwide. The film has a 2.99 multiplier which is not bad, especially for a rough year at the box office.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is at $863.1 million worldwide. It’ll settle around $864 million before it’s done in the next few weeks.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is making a comeback and stands at $172.8 million on a $177.2 million budget. The film is almost even with its budget which isn’t good, but it’s not the world class disaster it looked like, just a disaster.

Lets compare how the big two comic companies compare for earnings. On average DC films earn $338.9 million domestically while Marvel earns $308.3 million. Internationally, Marvel rules with $476.9 million and DC lags behind with $436.0 million. There’s still work for DC when it comes to the international film market.

Already, the year is an interesting one with three clear successes and a whole lot of mixed otherwise. Wonder Woman, Logan and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 have done well this year, The LEGO Batman Movie and Smurfs: The Lost Village, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Atomic Blonde are in that debatable area, and Valerian, Wilson and Ghost in the Shell are generally disappointments. Marvel’s Inhumans… got no clue.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard Wins the Worst Labor Day Weekend in 17 Years

It was another bad weekend at the box office but The Hitman’s Bodyguard won it again in the worst Labor Day three day weekend in 17 years. The top twelve films grossed $51.5 million and you have to go back to 2000 to get a worst weekend. That weekend grossed $47 million.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard did a three-peat earning an estimated $10.25 million to bring its total to $54.9 million on a $30 million budget.

Annabelle: Creation held the number two spot again earning an estimated $7.3 million to bring its domestic total to $89.0 million and worldwide is $253.4 million. That’s impressive for a $15 million budget.

In third place was Wind River which added $5.8 million to its domestic total. That film switched spots with Leap! which dropped to fourth adding $4.9 million to its total.

Rounding out the top five was Logan Lucky which holds that position adding $4.4 million to its domestic total bringing it to $21.5 million and $24.6 million worldwide on a $29 million budget.

When it comes to comic adaptations…

Spider-Man: Homecoming remained at #7 adding $3.7 million to its domestic total to bring it to $324.1 million. With its $422.1 million at the foreign box office the film sits at $746.2 million.

Wonder Woman improved some spots moving from #15 to #12 adding $1.9 million to its domestic total. The film has earned $408.9 million domestically and $403.7 million at the foreign box office for a total of $812.6 million total.

Inhumans is one I’ll add to the list coming in at #18 with $1.5 million. The “film” is a hybrid movie/television show between Marvel, ABC, and IMAX. It’s an IMAX only “film” limiting its reach and money in. It also brought in $1.1 million from 274 international runs in 65 markets with Germany, Italy, and South Korea still to come.

Atomic Blonde came in #26 with $887,145 to its domestic total. The domestic total is $50.4 million and $89.8 million worldwide. Not bad for a $30 million budget.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 added $210,000 to its domestic total. Domestically the film has earned $389.6 million and a worldwide total of $863 million to be the top comic adaptation of the year worldwide so far.

The movie is the top earning movie domestically for DC’s movie universe by a solid $76 million (and counting). The film however is third internationally behind both Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad and likely won’t pass either. It’s the second highest earning DC movie worldwide. Wonder Woman is also the top earning comic film domestically for the year so far.

Spider-Man: Homecoming earned $4.7 million over the week to bring its domestic total to $318.8 million, and with its $418.2 million, the film has earned $737.0 million worldwide. That’s about $13 million over the past week. The film has now passed the original Spider-Man for international earnings. While the film has done better than average domestically for a Spider-Man film it lags internationally.

Atomic Blonde added about $7 million over the past week to bring its worldwide total to $80.9 million. The film has a 2.7 multiplier which is not bad, especially for a rough year at the box office.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 added $400,000 to its overall total over the week which is about what it earned last week. The film sits at $862.8 million and will wind up between $863 and $864 million before it’s done.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets added $17 million to its worldwide total over the week bringing it to $132.9 million which is still far short of its $177.2 million budget. The film is still a disaster but not quite the trainwreck it once was.

It may pull that off still. The movie has earned Wonder Woman is the top earning movie domestically for DC’s movie universe. The film however is third internationally behind both Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad and likely won’t pass either. It’s the second highest earning DC movie worldwide.

Spider-Man: Homecoming earned $4.3 million to bring its domestic total to $314.1 million, and with its $410.8 million, the film has earned $724.9 million worldwide. That’s about $22 million over the past week. The film has now passed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for worldwide earnings, but is far below the average of all of the Spider-Man films released to date. This film will be debated as to its success. It’s the middle of the pack when it comes to domestic earnings but due to it dragging at the international box office the film is the second lowest earner worldwide for Spider-Man films.

Atomic Blonde added $2.2 million to its total for a domestic total of $47.2 million and $73.2 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. That’s an increase of about $12 million over the week.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 added $185,000 to its total to bring that to $389.2 million and $862.3 million worldwide. That’s a gain of about $400,000 over the past week. That’s the fifth highest grossing Marvel film (not adjusted).

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets didn’t make it in the weekend box office roundup but earned $500,000 domestically and about $24 million at the foreign box office over the past week. The film is still far short of its budget and unlikely to make it back.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard Tops One of the Worst Weekends of 2017

In another poor weekend at the box office, The Hitman’s Bodyguard topped it with an estimated debut of $21.6 million, ahead of expectations for the film. That’s not pad for a film with a $29 million budget and despite poor reviews of the film. It did get a “B+” CinemaScore from an audience that was 52% male and 70% over the age of 25.

Annabelle: Creation dipped to second place adding $15.5 million to its domestic total which now stands at $64 million. The film has earned $96.7 million at the foreign box office for a total of $160.7 million, beyond impressive for a $15 million film.

In third place was another new film, Logan Lucky which brought in $8.1 million. The film hasn’t been pushed well receiving little advertising and advace word. While the film has received good critic reviews, the audience graded it “B” for CinemaScore.

Dunkirk dropped from second to fourth adding $6.7 million to its total. The film has earned $392.7 million total on a $100 million budget.

Rounding out the top five was The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature which brought in $5.1 million. In two weeks the film has earned $17.7 million domestically on a $40 million budget. No international returns have been reported.

Overall, the weekend was a poor one with a combination of $81.5 million, less than $1 million more than the worst weekend of 2017 and adding to a summer season that’s behind the previous year by almost 13%.

When it comes to comic film adaptations….

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets continues to struggle standing at $90 million with a $177 million budget. The film will need a miracle from here on out.

Annabelle: Creation Creates Scares and a Win at the Weekend Box Office

It was a slow weekend at the box office down 6% from the same weekend last year but it was a big weekend for Warner Bros. whose Annabelle: Creation topped it with a $35 million opening. The film also has earned $36.7 million at the foreign box office for a toal of $71.7 million. With a budget of just $15 million, that’s a great start but, it’s the lowest opening the “Conjuring” series of films domestically. The previous Annabelle film, released in 2014, opened with $37.1 million, and 2016’s The Conjuring 2 opened with $40.4 million. That’s also the second win for director David F. Sandberg whose Lights Out earned $67.1 million on a $5 million budget. He’s rumored to be directing the big budget Shazam! film for WB and New Line.

The film play to a majority female audience of 52% who were 54% 25 years or older. The film received a “B” CinemaScore which is on par with the first film though the two Conjuring films received an “A-.”

Dunkirk repeated in second place adding $11.4 million to its domestic total to bring it to $153.7 million domestically and $363.7 million worldwide.

The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature opened in third place with $8.9 million. That’s the worst opening for a film playing in over 4,000 theaters. The Emoji Movie set that record a few weekends ago with $24.5 million and before that was The Mummy which opened with $31.7 million. It’s a record setting 2017!

The Dark Tower saw a 58.9% drop going from first to fourth and earning just $7.9 million domestically. The film sits at $34.3 million domestically on a $60 million budget. Its also earned $19.3 million at the foreign box office for $53.6 million total.

Finishing the top five was The Emoji Movie with $6.6 million domestically to bring its total to $63.6 million. Worldwide the film has brought in $97.2 million despite it being one of the worst reviewed films of the year.

When it comes to comic adaptations…

Spider-Man: Homecoming brought in $6.1 million to come in at #7. Domestically the film has earned $306.5 million and $702 million worldwide.

Atomic Blonde was #10 with $4.6 million. Worldwide the film has earned $61.7 million on a $30 million budget.

Wonder Woman was #16 with $1.5 million. The film has crossed the $400 million mark and sits at $402.2 million domestically and $797.1 million worldwide.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets earned $890,000 and struggles with just $90 million worldwide on a $177.2 million budget.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 added $262,000 to its domestic total to stand at $388.9 million domestically and $861.9 worldwide.

Dark Tower Barely Wins a Soft Weekend at the Box Office

Despite lots of anticipation and a good marketing push, Sony‘s The Dark Tower opened weakly barely winning the weekend box office in the softest weekend at the domestic box office since early April.

The film opened with an estimated $19.5 million domestically and $8 million at the foreign box office. With a budget of just $60 million that’s not horrible, but it’s also not that great. The film was to kick off a multi-platorm franchise but with an opening such as this one has to wonder how that might change. The film is the second largest opening for a Stephen King adaptation.

Dark Tower has just 18% on RottenTomatoes and received a “B” CinemaScore. It was mostly male with 58% and 68% were over the age of 25.

In a close second place was Dunkirk which added $17.6 million to its domestic total dropping just 34% in its third weekend. It now has a domestic total of $133.6 million and has earned $314.2 million worldwide so far.

In third place was The Emoji Movie which added $12.35 million to its domestic total with a 50% drop. It has earned $49.5 million domestically and $62.2 million worldwide.

Girls Trip is a trip folks want to take coming in fourth place and dropping just 42% in its third weekend. The film added $11.4 million to its total and stands at $85.4 million. The film is outpacing Bridesmaid so should wind up doing a bit better than that film when it’s theatrical run is over.

Rounding out the top five was Kidnap which brough in $10.2 million. It received a “B+” CinemaScore with an audience 63% female and 73% over the age of 25.

When it comes to comic adaptations….

Spider-Man: Homecoming came in sixth place adding $8.8 million to its total to bring it to $294.9 million domestically. Worldwide the film has earned $670.9 million which still has it dead last when it comes to worldwide earnings but it’s fourth when it comes to domestic (not adjusted for inflation).

Atomic Blonde dropped to seventh place just behind Spidey adding $8.2 million to its total to bring its domestic cume to $34.1 million on a $30 million budget. Worldwide the film has earned $45.8 million.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets continues to struggle adding $2.4 million to its domestic total. So far its earned $36.1 million and worldwide it has earned just $65.6 million on a $177.2 million budget.

Wonder Woman added $2.4 million to its total to bring its domestic total to $399.5 million. The film has also earned $393.9 million at the foreign box office for a worldwide total of $793.4 million.

Finally, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 added $445,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $388.4 million. Worldwide the film has earned $861.3 million.
