Where the Data Ranks 2017’s Comic Book Films

Last week we wrapped up our coverage of 2016’s comic adaptations and this week we begin to look at 2017 where there’s already been six films released in just five months.

Already, there year is an interesting one with two clear successes and a whole lot of mixed otherwise. Logan and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 have done well this year, The LEGO Batman Movie and Smurfs: The Lost Village are in that debatable area, and Wilson and Ghost in the Shell are generally disappointments.

Alien: Covenant Narrowly Beats Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

We predicted last week that it’d be a close one between Alien: Covenant and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at the weekend box office and we were right. Alien: Covenant debuted with an initial reported $36 million compared to Guardians‘ $35.1 million.

That $36 million was far below Prometheus‘ $51.1 million debut back in 2012, however, its budget was far less, $97 million compared to $130 million. Alien: Covenant has already earned $81.9 million at the foreign box office for $117.9 million so far total. The film should do fine in the long run overall, though it’s domestic total may be disappointing. The film earned a “B” CinemaScore and the audience was 62% male, 66% age 25 and older, and 51% Caucasian.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was second, earning an estimated $35.1 million in its third week. The film has earned $301.8 million domestically, $430.8 million at the foreign box office for $732.6 million so far. It’s possible the film crosses $1 billion. With a $200 million budget, it’s one of Marvel Studios’ more expensive films. They tend to have sequels balloon in budgets. It’s their sixth highest earning film (not adjusted for inflation).

In third place was Everything, Everything which did very well with an estimated $12 million. That was the higher end of estimates and the film earned an “A-” CinemaScore, so should do well off of word of mouth.

Snatched was anything but this weekend with an estimated $7.6 million to come in fourth place. The film cost an estimated $42 million and so far has earned $32.7 million domestically. It’ll need the foreign box office to make a profit.

Rounding out the top five was Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul which debuted with an estimated $7.2 million. That’s just half of the last film’s debut back in 2012, and that was about 50% less than the previous two films. This film will have to rely on kids getting out of school if it hopes to pick up business.

When it comes to comic adaptations…

Smurfs: The Lost Village continues to smurf along earning an estimated $520,000 to come in at #14. The film has earned $43 million domestically and $180 million worldwide. For a $60 million budget, that’s not too bad.

Logan came in at #25 and added $180,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $225.9 million. Worldwide the film has earned $607.3 million.

Though the film isn’t charting, The LEGO Batman Movie earned about $200,000 domestically over the past week to bring its total to $310.3 million.

And finally, Ghost in the Shell added about $1 million to its total to bring that to $169.6, there’s still some life in there it turns out.

We’ll be back in an hour for further analysis of 2017’s comic adaptations!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Drops 57% But Remains #1 at the Weekend Box Office

The weekend wasn’t too surprising as to the rankings, but the hard numbers are the story for the past box office weekend. As shouldn’t be a surprise, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 remained first at the box office earning an estimated $63 million. The film dropped 57% from the previoust week but that’s generally in line with Marvel sequels. The film has earned $246.2 million domestically in two weeks and $384.4 million in three weeks. So far, the film has earned $630.6 million worldwide. The film has now opened in all markets, so we’ll see how it does from here. The film is already third for worldwide grosses for 2017 passing Logan.

In second place was Snatched which brought in an estimated $17.5 million which is about the $18 million low end of the projections. The film was far short Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck which opened to $30 million in 2015. The film’s audience was largely women with 77% and 72% of the audience 25 years or older. The film also received a “B” CinemaScore. It’ll likely struggle to get to its $42 million budget.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword fell far short of its projections coming in third with an estimated $14.7 million. Expectations had the film opening with $23 to $25 million. The audience was 59% male and 56% under the age of 35 and the film recieved a “B+” CinemaScore. With a $175 million budget, this film’s success relies on the foreign box office. There it has earned $29.1 million. With only $43.8 million so far, Warner Bros. will probably be worried about this one.

The Fate of the Furious dropped from #2 to #4 with an estimated $5.3 million in its fifth week. The film has earned $215 million domestically and $1.19 billion worldwide so far. The movie is about $14 million behind Beauty and the Beast to take over the highest grossing film of 2017 (so far) title.

Rounding out the top five was The Boss Baby which added an estimated $4.6 million to its total to bring its domestic earnings to $162.4 million and $456.4 million worldwide.

This week Alien: Convenant opens up domestically and the film has already earned an estimated $42 milllion through international markets. I expect the film to come in first place though expect Guardians to give it a run for its money.

In comic movie news….

Smurfs: The Lost Village added $1.2 million to its domestic total bringing it to $42.2 million. Worldwide the film has earned $178.9 million. The film is far short of the previous two films, earning about half of the lowest earning film so far.

Logan continues to bring in dollars adding $285,000 to its domestic total to bring it to $225.5 million. Worldwide the film has earned $606.8 million and with a budget of just $97 million, that’s a solid return for Fox.

Ghost in the Shell added $100,000 to its total to bring its domestic earning to $40.4 million. Worldwide the film has brought in $168.7 million and with a $110 million budget the film will wind up not being quite the disaster some predicted and looks like it won’t be the story of the year but just one example of numerous films which tanked at the box office.

The LEGO Batman Movie continues to bring in dollars adding about $1.3 million to its worldwide total.

We’ll be back in an hour for further analysis of comic movie adaptations.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Dominates with $145 million Domestic Debut

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 dominated the weekend box office earning an estimated $145 million which beat the original film’s release by 53.78%. That’s the largest jump for a second film released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Captain America: Civil War was an 88.5% increase from Captain America: Winter Soldier).

The film earned an “A” CinemaScore with a 56% male audience, 22% were 25-years-old or younger, and 72% of the audience were adults, with 9% teenagers.

Internationally, the film brought in an estimated $123.8 million for the weekend giving it an international total of $282.6 million after 13 days. Total, the film has earned $427.6 million worldwide.

In second place was The Fate of the Furious which brought in an estimated $8.5 million to bring its domestic total to $207 million and worldwide total to $1.16 billion.

In third place was The Boss Baby which moved up from fourth. That film earned an estimated $6.2 million and $156.7 million domestically and $434.9 million worldwide.

Fourth place was held by How to Be a Latin Lover which earned an estimaed$5.23 million to bring its domestic total to  $20.6 million.

Finally, Beauty and the Beast moved from sixth to fifth adding an estimated $4.9 million to its total. Domestically the film has earned $487.6 million and worldwide it has earned $1.19 billion.

When it comes to other comic adaptations….

Smurfs: The Lost Village was #10 adding $1.8 to its domestic total to stand at $40.6 million and $171.3 million worldwide.

Logan was #21 adding $330,000 to its total which is $225.1 million domestically and $606.2 million worldwide.

Finally, Ghost in the Shell added $110,000 to its domestic total which stands at $40.2 million and $167.6 million worldwide.

We’ll be back in an hour for further analysis of comic movie adaptations.

The Fate of the Furious Remains in First with New Films Going 2, 3, 4. Guardians Already Tops $101 million.

The Fate of the Furious raced into first for the third week in a row adding an estimated $19.4 million to its total. The film after three weeks has earned $192.7 million and $1.06 billion worldwide. The film is currently in second place for the year behind Beauty and the Beast which has earned $1.143 billion so far. It’ll be interesting to see if it can catch up and pass that film to take the top spot. Furious 7 crossed the billion mark in 17 days and this film was pretty close to that. That film would go on to earn $1.5 billion by the time it was done.

The next three films were all debuts.

How to be a Latin Lover earned an estimated $12 million to come in second. That was earned in just 1,118 theaters giving an average of $10,750 per theater. The film received an “A” CinemaScore and had an audience that was 55% female, 75% 25 years or older, and 89% were Hispanic. It’s another example of a film having a specific audience and that audience delivering solid earnings.

In third was what can only be considered a shocker, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion which earned an estimated $10.1 million. That film only played in 425 theaters which means an average of $23,855 per theater. That’s the largest opening for an Indian film domestically.

The Circle came in third with an estimated $9.3 million. That has to be disappointing considering the star power of Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega, and Karen Gillan. The film received a “D+” CinemaScore so don’t expect it to do much better going forward. The audience was 62% female and 44% between the ages of 18 and 34 which may bode well for the drawing power of Watson and Boyega who were prominent in the advertising. The film cost $18 million and acquired for $8 million so it’ll likely do fine in the end.

Rounding out the top five was The Boss Baby which added $9.1 million to its domestic total bringing that to $148.5 million. The film is just shy of $400 million, it has earned $396.6 million worldwide so far.

When it comes to “comic adaptations”….

Smurfs: The Lost Village added $3.3 million to its domestic total bringing the film to $37.7 million domestically and $117.8 million in foreign box offices for a total of $155.5 million. That’s an increase of about $22 million since last week.

Logan brought in $760,000 domestically for its domestic total to reach $224.5 million. The film has earned $607.7 million worldwide so far. That’s about a $1 million increase from last week.

Ghost in the Shell added $430,000 to its domestic total bringing that to $39.9 million. The film has earned $166.1 million worldwide. That’s a $4 million increase from the previous week.

The LEGO Batman Movie still is earning bringing in about $1 million since last week. And finally, Wilson looks like its earned no money since last week.

Opening domestically this week is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which is sure to be the top film at the box office. The film has opened in 58% of the international market this past weekend where it earned an estimated $101.2 million. The film was in first place in almost all of its markets.

We’ll be back in an hour for a deeper dive into the numbers for this comic adaptations.

Furious, Boss Baby, and Beauty Repeat 1 2 3 at the Box Office

This past weekend’s box office looked a lot like the previous weekend with The Fate of the Furious repeating in first place earning an estimated $38.7 million. The film has earned $163.6 million domestically. Internationally is where the big story is for the film where it earned $163.4 million in 65 territories this past weekend to bring it to $744.8 million. The movie in two weeks has earned $908.4 million. The film will hit the billion mark in the next week and it will debut in Japan on April 28.

The question for the film is how quickly will it pass Beauty and the Beast to become the top grossing film worldwide for the year and if it can pass the last film’s worldwide gross of $1.5 billion?

The Boss Baby repeated and came in second place earning an estimated $12.8 million to bring its domestic total to $137 million. Worldwide the film has earned $358.1 million.

In third place is this year’s top-earning film so far both domestically and internationally Beauty and the Beast. The film brought in an estimated $10 million to bring it domestic total to $471.1 million. The film opened in its final international market, Japan, where it earned an estimated $12.8 million. Worldwide the film has earned $1.1 billion.

New film Born in China debuted in fourth place where it earned $5.1 million. The film has earned $9.5 million in foreign markets bringing its total to $14.6 million.

Rounding out the top five was Going in Style which brought in $5 million domestically to bring its total to $31.8 million and $50.9 million worldwide so far.

When it comes to comic films, Smurfs: The Lost Village was #6 and earned an estimated $4.9 million. The film opened in China with an estimated $11.1 million there. That helped it cross $100 million at the foreign box office and altogether the film has earned $133.7 million.

Logan earned an estimated $950,000 to come in at #18. The film has earned $223.4 million domestically, $382.8 million for a total of $606.2 million worldwide.

Just behind Logan was Ghost in the Shell at #19 which earned an estimated $900,000. The film so far has earned $39.1 million domestically and $123.1 million at the foreign box office for a total of $162.2 million. I thought the film would cross the $200 million mark and double its budget, but it doesn’t look like that’ll happen.

Wilson continues to trickle in dollars earning about $3,000 over the past week and The LEGO Batman Movie brought in about $1.2 million over the past week.

We’ll have final look at 2016’s comic adaptations and how they stack up to year’s past as we begin to focus on 2017’s comic adaptations.

Fate of the Furious Debuts with Record International and Worldwide Opening

Every inch counts and Fate of the Furious learned that this weekend with an opening of just over $100 million. The film earned an estimated $100.2 million in its debut weekend to take first place by quite a few miles. The previous installment opened with $147.2 million domestically and went on to earn $1.52 billion.

But, the bigger news is the film opened in 60 international markets where it earned a record $432.3 million which resulted in a record $532.5 million worldwide debut. The film set a three-day opening weekend record in China where it earned $190 million and was the #1 film in every territory it opened.

Domestically, the film earned an “A” Cinemascore and the audience was 58% male vs. 42% female with 50% under the age of 25 and 41% Caucasian moviegoers, 26% Hispanic, 19% African-American and 11% Asian.

With numbers like that, it should be no surprise a ninth film will be out in 2019 and tenth film in 2021. The film is already in fourth place for 2017’s worldwide grosses and ninth domestically. It should quickly vault into second internationally after this week. After that, it’s a race to see if it can top Beauty and the Beast which is in first place both domestically and internationally and has earned $1.04 billion so far.

In second place was The Boss Baby which earned an estimated $15.5 million. The film has earned $116.3 million domestically and $122.6 million in foreign box offices for a total of $238.9 million.

Third place was held by Beauty and the Beast which brought in an estimated $13.6 million domestically. The film is the top movie of 2017 so far.

Smurfs: The Lost Village came in fourth place with an estimated $6.5 million. In two weeks the film has earned $24.7 million domestically and $95 million worldwide.

Rounding out the top five was Going in Style which earned an estimated $6.4 million and the film has earned $35.1 million worldwide so far.

In more comic related earnings….

Ghost in the Shell dropped from fifth to 11th adding $2.4 million domestically to bring its total to $37 million. Worldwide the film has earned $115.1 million to bring its total to $152.1 million. With a budget of $110 million, the film will probably end up with about double its budget in the end.

Logan dropped from #9 to #13 adding $1.9 million to its domestic total. The film is in second place worldwide and domestically so far having earned $221.6 domestically, $377.5 in foreign box offices for a worldwide total of $599.2 million.

Wilson limps along having earned about $20,000 from last week. The film will be lucky to break $1 million by the time it’s done.

We’ll be back in an hour to take a look at 2016s comic adaptation films and wind down last year before we dive deep into this year.

Boss Baby Repeats in First While Beauty and the Beast Repeats in Second

It was a weekend as expected where Boss Baby came in first place repeating in its second weekend. The film earned an estimated $26.3 million bringing its domestic total to $89.4 million. The film narrowly beat Beauty and the Beast again which repeated in second place. That film earned $25 million to bring its domestic total to $432.3 million domestically and $977.4 million worldwide. The film will likely cross the billion dollar mark this coming week.

In third and fourth place were two new films that performed as expected. Smurfs: The Lost Village opened up with $14 million to come in third while Going in Style earned $12.5 million to come in fourth.

Ghost in the Shell dropped almost 61% from its debut weekend to add $7.4 million to its domestic total and round out the top five. The film’s domestic total is $31.6 million but it has also earned $92.8 million for $124.4 million worldwide. The film was always likely to make most of its totals in international theaters and the film looks to be performing in a similar way to Warcraft which went on to earn $433.7 million worldwide.

In comic book films….

Logan came in at #8 with an estimated domestic earning of $4.1 million to bring that total to $218.1 million. The film worldwide has earned $596.6 million.

Both Wilson and The LEGO Batman Movie have dropped out of the listing. Wilson looks to have made about $41,000 over the week. The LEGO Batman Movie added about $3 million over the past week as it keeps earning money internationally.

Come back in an hour where we’ll explore more info on comic film adaptations.
