Review: Injustice vs. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #1

DC Comics has been really doing a lot with their Masters of the Universe comics since the ongoing series ended some time ago. That mainly has been in the form of a series of mini-series and crossovers. DC has also been crossing over their characters with properties that have only crossed over in our childhood imagination. Two properties come together in Injustice vs. Masters of the Universe #1 and while I initially expected a cash-in, writer Tim Seeley delivers something so much more.

The issue kicks off with He-Man liberating his people from Faker who has taken control. But, do the people of Eternia prefer He-Man over Faker? There’s something very Trumpian about it all as the people of Eternia go all MEGA touting Faker’s good positive attributes and how he took on issues the people care about. While all of that could be a comic story arc by itself, it’s used as a way to contrast things that have happened in the world of Injustice where Superman has enslaved the world again and now has gone all pre-cog stopping crime before it has begun. But, Superman has a weakness and that’s magic. Hence, the need for the heroes of Injustice to seek out He-Man’s help.

The art by Freddie Williams II with color by Jeremy Colwell, and lettering by Wes Abbott looks great as expected. Williams is the go to artist for these crossover events for DC and his style adds to the fun nature of all of them. It’s distinct and it looks really good. Here, the two distinctive styles of heroes feels like they could be from the same multiverse.

The comic is surprisingly deep with an underlying focus on today’s socio-political state of things. That’s unexpected and really changed this from a fun crossover to something a lot more. I went from looking forward to this to really wanting to see what comes next.
